Summary Earthworm and enchytraeid densities and biomass were sampled over an 18-month period in conventional and no-tillage agroecosystems. Overall, earthworm densities and biomass in the no-till system were 70% greater than under conventional tilling, and enchytraeid densities and biomass in the no-till system were 50%–60% greater. To assess the role of annelids in the breakdown of soil organic matter, carbofuran was applied to field enclosures and target (earthworm and enchytraeid biomass, standing stocks of organic matter) and non-target effects (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematode and microarthropod densities, litter decay rates, plant biomass) were determined in two 10-month studies. In the winter-fall study, carbofuran reduced the annelid biomass, and total soil organic matter standing stocks were 47% greater under no-till with carbofuran compared to control enclosures. Twelve percent of the difference could have been due to non-target effects of carbofuran, as determined from litterbag decay rates. In the summer-spring study, carbofuran again significantly reduced the annelid biomass, and treated pens in the no-till area had significantly greater standing stocks of fine organic matter (43%–45%). Although the densities of bacteria and nematodes were reduced in carbofuran-treated litterbags under a no-till system, the rates of decay were not reduced and estimates of the amount of organic matter processed could not be adjusted for non-target effects. A 76% difference in the standing stock of coarse organic matter between control and carbofuran-treated pens in the conventional-till system indicated further non-target effects. We concluded that our estimates of the amount of organic matter processed by annelids in no-till and conventionally tilled agroecosystems represented a maximum potential because of the confounding non-target effects of carbofuran.  相似文献

The effects of methoctramine, a cardioselective muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, on heart rate and small intestinal motor activity were compared to those of the nonselective competitive muscarinic antagonist, atropine. Methoctramine or atropine, 6, 10, 30, 60 μg/kg, or sterile isotonic saline, was administered intravenously to six conscious dogs in cross-over studies. Methoctramine administration caused dose-dependent tachycardia without affecting intestinal motility, while atropine administration caused dose-dependent tachycardia accompanied by significant reductions in small intestinal motility. Additionally, methoctramine did not inhibit intestinal smooth muscle contractile activity initiated by the muscarinic agonist bethanechol, while atropine inhibited bethanechol-induced contractile activity in a dose-dependent manner. Calculated dosages of methoctramine and atropine required to produce a 50% increase in heart rate over baseline were 35.1 ± 5.3 and 39.5 ± 6.2 μg/kg, respectively. This dosage of atropine caused a 93 ± 13.9% reduction in intestinal motility. These findings suggest that selective muscarinic antagonists may be useful drugs for those veterinary patients in which nonselective muscarinic antagonists have the potential to produce untoward effects on intestinal motility.  相似文献

Twenty-five known anthelmintic compounds were evaluated in vitro against the highly motile exsheathed non-feeding third-stage of Haemonchus contortus larvae. Activity was based on lack of motility or death of larvae after 24 h of chemical exposure. Six compounds (avermectins, closantel, levamisole, morantel, phenylhydrazone and ticarbodine) were active at a concentration of 100 μg cm?3 or less. The most active compounds were avermectins and levamisole. When higher in vitro concentrations were used, ten compounds (bephenium, coumaphos, dichlorovos, disophenol, hygromycin b, methyridine, parbendazole, phenothiazine, pyrantel and thiabendazole) exhibited activity. Nine compounds were found to be inactive; among these were the new benzimidazoles, i.e., albendazole, fenbendazole, mebendazole and oxibendazole. Because of the inactivity of the new benzimidazoles, this in vitro system is unsuitable as a routine screening tool. Also, the system appears to favor drugs that act quickly through percuticular entry. In an initial group of 5280 untested compounds, 254 (4.8%) exhibited in vitro activity at 100 μg cm?3 against the non-feeding larvae stage. The exogenous and in vitro cultivation techniques required for collecting, cleaning and exsheating the larvae are described.  相似文献

Ciliary body adenocarcinomas are well-recognized tumors in dogs; however, invasion of the lens by the tumor has not been described in veterinary species. Evaluation of the right eye of a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever revealed a ciliary body mass spanning from the 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock position that was impinging on the lens. Histologic evaluation of the enucleated eye revealed a ciliary body adenocarcinoma with lens invasion. Where the tumor encroached on the lens, the lens capsule was absent and there was scrolling of the broken ends of the capsule. Tumor cells were juxtaposed to the lens fibers and dissecting between the lens fibers. There were no inflammatory cells within the lens associated with the breaks in the capsule or within the anterior chamber. To our knowledge this is the first report of lens invasion by a tumor in any veterinary species.  相似文献

Saturn's moon Rhea had been considered massive enough to retain a thin, externally generated atmosphere capable of locally affecting Saturn's magnetosphere. The Cassini spacecraft's in situ observations reveal that energetic electrons are depleted in the moon's vicinity. The absence of a substantial exosphere implies that Rhea's magnetospheric interaction region, rather than being exclusively induced by sputtered gas and its products, likely contains solid material that can absorb magnetospheric particles. Combined observations from several instruments suggest that this material is in the form of grains and boulders up to several decimetres in size and orbits Rhea as an equatorial debris disk. Within this disk may reside denser, discrete rings or arcs of material.  相似文献

Anthelmintic efficacies of 3 formulations of fenbendazole were evaluated in cattle naturally parasitized with nematodes: a 10% oral suspension, 0.5% pellets as a top dressing on feed, and a 20% premix. All formulations of fenbendazole were greater than 99% effective in removing adults of Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia spp, Cooperia spp, and Oesophagostomum radiatum. Fenbendazole was greater than 96% effective in removing adults of Strongyloides papillosus and greater than 85% effective in the removal of Trichuris sp. Fenbendazole was greater than 96% effective against immature nematodes, which were thought to be primarily Cooperia spp. Adverse reactions were not observed in calves treated with the 3 formulations of fenbendazole.  相似文献

Fenbendazole (FBZ) was continuously infused for 30 days into the rumen of 103 lambs which had mature or developing benzimidazole-susceptible or thiabendazole-resistant Haemonchus contortus and susceptible Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections. Ovicidal, larvicidal and adulticidal activities were exhibited against benzimidazole-susceptible and benzimidazole-resistant H. contortus worms by FBZ at a dose level of greater than or equal to 0.2 mg kg-1 body weight day-1. Reasonably consistent high level efficacy against H. contortus was obtained with dose levels greater than 0.4 mg kg-1. Excellent control of susceptible T. colubriformis worms was achieved with the lowest dose tested of 0.4 mg kg-1 day-1. The intraruminal infusion critical study method is a tool to determine the feasibility of incorporating a candidate anthelmintic compound in a continuous sustained-release rumen device formulation. The anthelmintic profile of FBZ obtained by low-level intraruminal administration suggests that it would be a potential candidate.  相似文献
