A 21-year-old Quarter horse gelding was presented with stranguria and incontinence of 10 days duration. Despite catheterization and antibiotic therapy, the horse was euthanized. Necropsy revealed posterior abdominal and pelvic abscessation with adhesions of the urinary bladder and severe ulcerative cystitis.  相似文献

Bovine papillomavirus (BPV) types 1 and 2 play an important role in the pathogenesis of equine sarcoids (ES), the most common cutaneous tumour affecting horses. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small non‐coding RNAs that regulate essential biological and cellular processes, have been found dysregulated in a wide range of tumours. The aim of this study was to identify miRNAs associated with ES. Differential expression of miRNAs was assessed in control equine fibroblasts (EqPalFs) and EqPalFs transformed with the BPV‐1 genome (S6‐2 cells). Using a commercially available miRNA microarray, 492 mature miRNAs were interrogated. In total, 206 mature miRNAs were differentially expressed in EqPalFs compared with S6‐2 cells. Aberrant expression of these miRNAs in S6‐2 cells can be attributed to the presence of BPV‐1 genomes. Furthermore, we confirm the presence of 124 miRNAs previously computationally predicted in the horse. Our data supports the involvement of miRNAs in the pathogenesis of ES.  相似文献

The European Non‐native Species in Aquaculture Risk Analysis Scheme (ENSARS) was developed in response to European ‘Council Regulation No. 708/2007 of 11 June 2007 concerning use of alien and locally absent species in aquaculture’ to provide protocols for identifying and evaluating the potential risks of using non‐native species in aquaculture. ENSARS is modular in structure and adapted from non‐native species risk assessment schemes developed by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation and for the UK. Seven of the eight ENSARS modules contain protocols for evaluating the risks of escape, introduction to and establishment in open waters, of any non‐native aquatic organism being used (or associated with those used) in aquaculture, that is, transport pathways, rearing facilities, infectious agents, and the potential organism, ecosystem and socio‐economic impacts. A concluding module is designed to summarise the risks and consider management options. During the assessments, each question requires the assessor to provide a response and confidence ranking for that response based on expert opinion. Each module can also be used individually, and each requires a specific form of expertise. Therefore, a multidisciplinary assessment team is recommended for its completion.  相似文献

Leucine metabolism in comparison to glucose, and with substrate and insulin supplementation, were studied in bovine adipose tissue slices obtained from the tailhead region. In addition, leucine metabolism by isolated adipocytes in a Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate (KRB) buffer was compared to metabolism in Medium-199. Slices oxidized leucine and incorporated the amino acid into cellular protein and lipid, though at much lower rates than for glucose. Glucose addition increased leucine oxidation and its incorporation into lipid but did not affect protein synthesis. Insulin, up to 100 ng/ml, had no effect. Isolated cells convened a higher proportion of the leucine utilized to lipid, and less to protein, than did slices. Absolute rates of oxidation and lipid synthesis were lower, and protein synthesis higher, for Medium-199 than for KRB. Of the total leucine utilized, conversion to lipid represented the largest percentage in both buffers. Insulin had no effect in either buffer system. Bovine adipose tissue, the major site of fatty acid synthesis in this species, was found to both oxidize leucine, and utilize the amino acid for synthesis of cellular components. The isolated adipocyte, free of connective tissue, directs this “ketogenic” amino acid primarily towards lipid synthesis, by mechanisms which appear to be insulin insensitive in the adult bovine, as studied under short-term, in-vitro conditions.  相似文献

Two finishing trials, one laboratory trial and one metabolism trial were conducted with the following objectives: 1) to determine the associative effects of feeding high-moisture corn (HMC) with either dry-rolled grain sorghum (DRGS) or dry-rolled corn (DRC) and 2) to evaluate HMC when harvested at different moisture levels, stored in different structures, or fed as whole or rolled HMC. In Trial 1, yearling steers (BW, 328 kg) were fed diets containing mixtures of HMC and DRGS. As level (0, 33, 100%, as percentage of grain DM) of DRGS increased, ADG (P less than .03) and gain/feed (P less than .001) decreased linearly; gain/feed tended to be affected quadratically (P = .14). In Trial 2, yearling steers (BW, 382 kg) fed HMC, stored whole in an upright, oxygen-limiting silo and rolled coarsely before feeding, gained faster (1.46 vs 1.36 kg/d) and more efficiently (.142 vs. .131 gain/feed) than steers fed whole HMC (P less than .01). In Trial 3, as length of storage of bunker HMC increased, in vitro rate of starch digestion and soluble N content increased (20.4 and 36.8%, respectively) and grain pH decreased (10.9%). In Trial 4, steers fed HMC or a mixture of 75% HMC with 25% DRGS had similar ruminal pH throughout a grain adaptation period, but total ruminal VFA were greater (P less than .005) for steers fed HMC alone. These data are interpreted to suggest that feeding a mixture of HMC, ground and stored in a bunker or silo bag, with DRGS will result in a 3.2% associative effect. However, no associative effects were measured when a mixture of HMC, stored whole and fed whole or rolled, and DRC were fed.  相似文献

Two metabolism trials were conducted with yearling steers fed mature native forage to measure the effect of supplemental protein degradability on selected metabolic variables. Supplements contained 40% crude protein equivalence. In Trial 1, four abomasal-cannulated steers weighing 290 to 379 kg were fed supplements containing the following N sources: (1) 15% corn, 85% urea (U); (2) 100% soybean meal (SBM); (3) 10% corn, 40% soybean meal, 50% urea (SBM-U) and (4) 14% corn, 36% blood meal, 50% urea (BM-U). Equal portions of the daily diet (2.2% of body weight) were fed every 2 h. Treatment differences were not significant for organic matter digestibility, abomasal organic matter flow, nonammonia N flow, feed N flow, bacterial N flow and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis. There was a positive (P less than .05) relationship between quantity of slowly degraded protein fed and nonammonia N flow (r = .97) or feed N flow (r = .98). Escape N was determined to be 21.5, 16.5 and 54.2% in SBM, SBM-U and BM-U supplements, respectively. In the second trial, no supplement, SBM, SBM-U and BM-U were fed in a N balance trial. Dry matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fiber digestibilities were higher (P less than .05) for steers fed supplemented diets. Acid detergent fiber digestibility was higher (P less than .05) for steers supplemented with SBM than steers fed the unsupplemented diets. Two factorial experiments were conducted to investigate site and extent of organic matter (OM) digestion, nitrogenous fractions flowing at the abomasum and rates-of-passage in steers fed 0, 2 or 4 g NH3/100 g dry matter of treated corncobs supplemented with either a corn or a blood meal-corn gluten meal (BM-CGM) supplement. Rumen and total tract OM digestion coefficients were quadratically increased (P less than .05) and dietary N was quadratically increased (P less than .07) due to the main effect of ammonia. The main effect of protein supplement increased (P less than .05) postruminal OM digestibility, nonammonia N and dietary-N flow. Quadratic protein X ammonia interactions were noted for fluid flow, total-N flow, total amino acid flow and ammonia-N flow. Linear protein X ammonia interactions were noted for bacterial-N flow, which appeared to indicate that N utilization of the ammoniated corn-cob was improved by the inclusion of BM-CGM in the diet. Diet dry matter intake, fluid volume, rate of fluid passage, particulate mass and rate of particulate passage in rumen-fistulated steers were unaffected by either main effect. However, rumen fluid pH of steers fed BM-CGM was lower than that from steers fed the corn supplement.  相似文献

Vascular alterations play important roles in many orthopedic diseases such as osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and synovitis in both human and equine athletes. Understanding these alterations could enhance diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Contrast‐enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) could be a valuable method for evaluation of blood flow and perfusion of these processes in the equine distal limb, however no reports were found describing feasibility or safety of the technique. The goal of this prospective, experimental study was to describe the feasibility and safety of distal limb CEUS in a sample of six horses. For each horse, CEUS of the distal limb was performed after intravenous injections of 5 and 10 ml, as well as intra‐arterial injections of 0.5 and 1 ml contrast medium. Vital parameters were monitored and CEUS images were assessed qualitatively and quantitatively for degree of contrast enhancement. None of the horses had clinically significant changes in their vital parameters after contrast medium injection. One horse had a transient increase in respiratory rate, and several horses had mild increases of systolic blood pressure of short duration after intravenous, but not after intra‐arterial injections. Intra‐arterial injection was possible in all horses and resulted in significantly improved contrast enhancement both quantitatively (P = 0.027) and qualitatively (P = 0.019). Findings from this study indicated that CEUS is a feasible and safe diagnostic test for evaluation of the equine distal limb. Future studies are needed to assess the clinical utility of this test for horses with musculoskeletal diseases.  相似文献
