Understanding metabolic differences between breeds of cattle is important when selecting for production in semiarid environments. Spring-calving multiparous Angus and Brahman cows (n = 8/breed) grazing in the Chihuahuan Desert were used to evaluate metabolic hormone status in February (i.e., 3rd trimester of pregnancy), May (i.e., early lactation), and September (i.e., late lactation) 2000. Crude protein in ruminal digesta collected from grazing companion ruminally cannulated cows during these months was 5.6, 6.0, and 10.3%, respectively. Angus cows were heavier (P < 0.01) than Brahman cows across months. Body condition scores among breed groups were 4.4, 3.6, and 4.6 in February, May, and September with Brahman cows tending (P < 0.10) to have greater body condition than Angus cows in May. Brahman cows tended to have greater fecal output per 100 kg BW than Angus cows in February (0.9 > 0.7 +/- 0.1, P < 0.10). Brahman cows had greater serum concentrations of leptin than Angus cows in September (1.8 > 0.70 +/- 0.1 ng/mL; P < 0.05), and serum concentrations of insulin were greater (P < 0.01) in Brahman than Angus cows throughout the study. Brahman cows also had greater (P < 0.01) serum concentrations of glucose during February and May than Angus cows. Serum concentrations of triiodothyronine were greatest (P < 0.01) during September and lowest during February and May in both breed groups and were greater (P < 0.01) in Brahman than in Angus cows in February, May, and September. Pregnancy rate and 205-d adjusted weaning weights were similar (P > or = 0.46) among breed groups. Results suggest that Brahman and Angus cows are sensitive to the seasonal dynamics of forage quality in the Chihuahuan Desert. Brahman cattle appear to have greater concentrations of metabolic hormones and metabolites than Angus cows in this environment, but Angus cows experience greater fluctuations in BW. 相似文献

Use of melengestrol acetate and gonadotropins to induce fertile estrus in seasonally anestrous ewes.
Ewes of three genotypes (Hampshire, n = 59; Rambouillet, n = 36; crossbred, n = 57) were used to determine the efficiency of melengestrol acetate (MGA) and(or) PG-600 (a combination of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin and human chorionic gonadotropin) in inducing fertile estrus in seasonally anestrus ewes. Ewes were assigned randomly, within genotype, to treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Treatments were control, .125 mg of MGA given twice per day for 9 d (MGA), a single 5-mL injection of PG-600 (PG-600), and the combination of treatments MGA and PG-600 (MGA/PG-600). Feeding of MGA began on May 14, 1990, and ended on May 23. Injections of PG-600 were given immediately after the last feeding of MGA or vehicle on May 23. All ewes were exposed to fertile, brisket-painted rams on May 24 (d 0) for 40 d. Ewes were checked for estrus twice daily for 9 d. Laparoscopy was performed, to assess ovulation rate (OR), on d 6 for ewes that were not detected in estrus and on d 12 for ewes that exhibited estrus. Percentage of ewes mated was increased by MGA (P less than .001). Ovulation rate of ewes exposed to rams was increased by PG-600 (P less than .01) and this effect was enhanced by MGA (P less than .05), whereas MGA alone tended to decrease OR (P less than .10). The Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) project estimates the frequencies, amplitudes, and linewidths of more than 250,000 acoustic resonances of the sun from data sets lasting 36 days. The frequency resolution of a single data set is 0.321 microhertz. For frequencies averaged over the azimuthal order m, the median formal error is 0.044 microhertz, and the associated median fractional error is 1.6 x 10(-5). For a 3-year data set, the fractional error is expected to be 3 x 10(-6). The GONG m-averaged frequency measurements differ from other helioseismic data sets by 0.03 to 0.08 microhertz. The differences arise from a combination of systematic errors, random errors, and possible changes in solar structure. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare obese horses with insulin resistance (IR) with nonobese horses and determine whether blood resting glucose, insulin, leptin, and lipid concentrations differed between groups and were correlated with combined glucose-insulin test (CGIT) results. ANIMALS: 7 obese adult horses with IR (OB-IR group) and 5 nonobese mares. PROCEDURES: Physical measurements were taken, and blood samples were collected after horses had acclimated to the hospital for 3 days. Response to insulin was assessed by use of the CGIT, and maintenance of plasma glucose concentrations greater than the preinjection value for > or = 45 minutes was used to define IR. Area under the curve values for glucose (AUC(g)) and insulin (AUC(i)) concentrations were calculated. RESULTS: Morgan, Paso Fino, Quarter Horse, and Tennessee Walking Horse breeds were represented in the OB-IR group. Mean neck circumference and BCS differed significantly between groups and were positively correlated with AUC values. Resting insulin and leptin concentrations were 6 and 14 times as high, respectively, in the OB-IR group, compared with the nonobese group, and were significantly correlated with AUC(g) and AUC(i). Plasma nonesterified fatty acid, very low-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations were significantly higher (86%, 104%, and 29%, respectively) in OB-IR horses, and HDL-C concentrations were positively correlated with AUC values. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Measurements of neck circumference and resting insulin and leptin concentrations can be used to screen obese horses for IR. Our objective was to determine if serum concentrations of leptin could be used to predict carcass composition and merit in feedlot finished cattle. Two different groups of crossbred Bos taurus steers and heifers were managed under feedlot conditions near Miles City, MT. The first group consisted of 88 1/2 Red Angus, 1/4 Charolais, and 1/4 Tarentaise composite gene combination steers (CGC) harvested at the ConAgra processing facility in Greeley, CO. The second group (Lean Beef Project; LB) consisted of 91 F2 steers and heifers born to Limousin, Hereford, or Piedmontese by CGC F1 cows crossed to F1 bulls of similar breed composition and harvested at a local processing facility in Miles City, MT. Blood samples were collected approximately 24 h before harvest (CGC) or approximately 3 d before and at harvest (LB). No differences in serum concentrations of leptin were detected (P > 0.10) between Hereford, Limousin, or Piedmontese F2 calves nor between LB steers and heifers. Positive correlations (P < 0.01) existed between serum leptin and marbling score (r = 0.35 and 0.50), fat depth measured between the 12th and 13th rib (r = 0.34 and 0.46), kidney, pelvic, and heart fat (KPH) (r = 0.42 and 0.46), and quality grade (r = 0.36 and 0.49) in CGC and LB cattle, respectively. Serum leptin was also positively correlated with calculated yield grade for CGC steers (r = 0. 19; P = 0. 10) and LB cattle (r = 0.52; P < 0.01). Longissimus area was not correlated with serum leptin in CGC steers (r = 0.12; P > 0.10). However, a negative correlation existed between longissimus area and serum leptin in the LB cattle (r = -0.45; P < 0.01). Serum concentrations of leptin were significantly associated with carcass composition (marbling, back fat depth, and KPH fat) and quality grade in both groups of cattle studied and may provide an additional indicator of fat content in feedlot cattle. 相似文献

Leptin and peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) are adipogenic proteins that are actively involved in metabolic homeostasis of fat. Recently, it was reported that fat tissue in humans and rodents differs in metabolic activity relative to anatomical location of the fat tissue (i.e. depots) and animal age. Hence, we hypothesized that leptin and PPARγ production in various fat depots in female pigs differs in response to acute fasting, and that these responses vary with physiological maturity of the animal. Sixteen intact crossbred immature female pigs [prepubertal (PP); 132.2 ± 4.1 days] and 16 sexually mature female pigs (M; 224 ± 7.4 days) housed in an open‐air, concrete slab, sheltered barn were randomly assigned to either Control or Fasted treatments. Control pigs (PP, n = 8; M, n = 8) had ad libitum access to feed, while Fasted pigs (PP, n = 8; M, n = 8) were denied access to feed from the onset of the study (0 h) to euthanasia at 72 h. Immediately post‐mortem, fat samples were collected from the subcutaneous, pelvic, kidney, and heart (M pigs only) fat depots and analysed for leptin and PPARγ mRNA and protein content. Acute fasting decreased mean leptin mRNA tissue content in a depot specific manner in M pigs (p < 0.01), while mean leptin protein concentrations in fat tissues did not differ with fat depot or age of the pig. Furthermore, acute fasting did not affect mean PPARγ mRNA tissue content in a fat depot or age dependent manner. Mean concentrations of PPARγ protein in fat depots tended to be greater in M vs. PP pigs (p = 0.07). We suggest that these data provide evidence that acute fasting has a greater effect on leptin than PPARγ production in a fat depot dependent manner in M pigs, which may be indicative of changing physiological demands as an animal matures. 相似文献
