Complex long-bone fractures with short juxta-articular fracture segments can be difficult to manage. Recently, IMEX Veterinary, Inc., began producing titanium hybrid rods that can be secured to ring components of the IMEX circular external skeletal fixation system to create SK-circular hybrids. In this case series, SK-circular hybrids were used to stabilize long-bone fractures (two femoral, one humeral, and three tibial fractures) with short distal bone segments in three dogs and three cats with body weights ranging from 1.9 to 15 kg (mean, 6.7 kg; median, 5.4 kg). Although three cases required surgical revision, animals ambulated well and all fractures obtained union. Time to radiographic union ranged from 62 to 137 days (mean, 90 days; median, 84 days). Urbanization and associated landscaping has increased the abundance of year-round habitat for waterfowl, resulting in vegetation damage, loss of recreational activities, air transportation mishaps and health hazards. As part of a research program to develop socially acceptable techniques for management of pest bird populations, we are evaluating nicarbazin as a contraceptive in pest and surrogate avian species. As reproductive studies with Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) are tedious due to the difficulty of conducting controlled field studies and/or breeding geese in captivity, we evaluated the effects of oral nicarbazin administration on the production and hatchability of chicken eggs. Blood plasma and egg DNC concentrations were correlated to contraceptive efficacy. Subsequent studies are being conducted with geese to determine the diet nicarbazin concentration required to produce the desired blood and plasma DNC concentrations. This approach permits the expeditious evaluation of formulations and dosing regimes by simply monitoring blood DNC concentrations in target species. 相似文献
Platelet function was assessed by aggregometry in 10 Holstein calves before and after exposure to Pasteurella haemolytica (biotype A, serotype 1) by intrabronchial challenge. At 24 h after exposure the platelets had become more reactive to stimulation with known platelet agonists such as adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and platelet-activating factor (PAF) and the platelet aggregates that formed were more resistant to disaggregation. The activation of platelets was an early response in the challenged calves as platelet function had returned to pretreatment levels 72 h after exposure to the bacteria while the acute phase reactant proteins, haptoglobin and fibrinogen, were approaching their peak values and alpha 2-macroglobulin levels had also risen significantly (P < 0.05) at this time. The plasma levels of these proteins were still elevated and albumin levels were depressed 6 d post-treatment. At post-mortem all calves exhibited pneumonic tissue damage. When P. haemolytica leukotoxin was added directly to bovine platelet suspensions both spontaneous aggregation and an increase in the aggregation response to ADP and PAF stimulation were observed. The morphological appearance of the platelet aggregates exhibited the typical pattern for bovine platelets with 2 distinct zones of cells being visible within each aggregate. One zone contained platelets in which the cytoplasmic granules were still evident and the other zone contained irregularly shaped platelets devoid of granular content. In the latter zone, discrete gaps, or pores, were evident in the plasma membrane of numerous platelets. This pore formation is characteristic of leukotoxin action and is not observed in ADP or PAF induced aggregates. 相似文献
In aquatic situations it was expected that adsorption by sediments and suspended solids would influence the movement of glyphosate away from the application zone and attenuate its phytotoxicity. However, the results of two experiments showed that only a minor proportion of glyphosate was adsorbed onto suspended solids, even in turbid irrigation water. Phytotoxicity, as measured by the effect on the root growth of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), was not significantly reduced. Where glyphosate was intentionally injected into flowing water of contrasting quality to simulate incidental contamination of water during foliage treatment, adsorption by benthic sediments attenuated loads of glyphosate only slowly. The attenuation was 13–27% for each kilometre of travel downstream, as compared to 31% observed previously. However, when glyphosate was sprayed onto the sediment exposed after channel draining, less than 7% of the glyphosate applied was subsequently eluted. Consequently, draining before treatment should be an effective strategy for minimising the contamination of irrigation water. 相似文献
1. The mineral composition of the albumen and yolk was determined in several eggs from each of a number of individual hens from the same White‐Leghorn strain. X‐ray fluorescent spectrometry was used to undertake two independent series of analyses. A total of 8 minerals (calcium, chlorine, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur) were included in the analyses of the yolk and the same minerals, but excluding iron (which is present in only small amounts), in the albumen.
2. There was considerable variation between individuals in the mineral concentration in their eggs (coefficients of variation ranged between 3.8% for sodium to 19.9% for calcium in the albumen, and between 4.3% for phosphorus to 11.8% for iron in the yolk).
3. At the same time, the moderately high repeatability of mineral concentration (t = 0.4?0.6) in successive eggs from the the same hen for several of the minerals analysed is indicative of some positive control by the hen of the mineral composition of her eggs.
4. There was a highly significant correlation (P≤ 0.001) between the mean concentration of potassium in the albumen and the hatchability of the eggs, supporting the claim that a deficiency of potassium in the egg could be the basis of some failures in hatchability.
5. The study also revealed variation among individual birds in the concentration of iron in the yolk which was negatively correlated (P≤0.01) with hatchability. No clear basis could be suggested for this variation among individual birds. 相似文献
Global grain production has increased dramatically during the past 50 years, mainly as a consequence of intensified land management and introduction of new technologies. For the future, a strong increase in grain demand is expected, which may be fulfilled by further agricultural intensification rather than expansion of agricultural area. Little is known, however, about the global potential for intensification and its constraints. In the presented study, we analyze to what extent the available spatially explicit global biophysical and land management-related data are able to explain the yield gap of global grain production. We combined an econometric approach with spatial analysis to explore the maximum attainable yield, yield gap, and efficiencies of wheat, maize, and rice production. Results show that the actual grain yield in some regions is already approximating its maximum possible yields while other regions show large yield gaps and therefore tentative larger potential for intensification. Differences in grain production efficiencies are significantly correlated with irrigation, accessibility, market influence, agricultural labor, and slope. Results of regional analysis show, however, that the individual contribution of these factors to explaining production efficiencies strongly varies between world-regions. 相似文献
We investigated the influence of remote sensing spatial resolution on estimates of characteristic land-cover change (LCC)
and LCC-related above-ground biomass change (Δbiomass) in three study sites representative of the East Siberian boreal forest.
Data included LCC estimated using an existing Landsat-derived land-cover dataset for 1990 and 2000, and above-ground standing
biomass stocks simulated by the FAREAST forest succession model and applied on a pixel basis. At the base 60 m resolution,
several landscape pattern metrics were derived to describe the characteristic LCC types. LCC data were progressively degraded
to 240, 480, and 960 m. LCC proportions and Δbiomass were derived at each of the coarser resolutions and scale dependences
of LCC and Δbiomass were analyzed. Compared to the base 60 m resolution, the Logged LCC type was highly scale dependent and
was consistently underestimated at coarser resolutions. The Burned type was under- or over-estimated depending strongly on
its patch size. Estimated at the base 60 m resolution, modeled biomass increased in two sites (i.e., 3.0 and 6.4 Mg C ha−1 for the Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk sites, respectively) and declined slightly in one site (i.e., −0.5 Mg C ha−1 for the Irkutsk site) between the two dates. At the degraded resolutions, the estimated Δbiomass increased to 3.3 and 7.0 Mg
C ha−1 for the Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk sites, while it declined to −0.8 Mg C ha−1 for the Irkutsk site. Results indicate that LCC and Δbiomass values may be progressively amplified in either direction as
resolution is degraded, depending on the mean patch size (MPS) of disturbances, and that the error of LCC and Δbiomass estimates

Fresh-cut iceberg lettuce dipped in either 5 or 47 degrees C water for 2 min was packaged in modified atmosphere film bags and then exposed to 0, 0.5, 1, or 2 kGy gamma-radiation. Dipping cut lettuce in 47 degrees C water for 2 min prior to irradiation reduced antioxidant and phenolic accumulations induced by irradiation. Irradiation at 2 kGy increased cellular leakage and sogginess of cut lettuce dipped in both temperatures. Samples irradiated at 0.5 and 1 kGy had similar firmness and vitamin C and antioxidant contents as the controls after 14 and 21 days of storage except 1 kGy samples dipped at 47 degrees C had lower antioxidant contents than controls at 14 days of storage. Lettuce dipped at 47 degrees C and irradiated at 0.5 and 1 kGy had better overall visual quality and less tissue browning than corresponding irradiated samples dipped at 5 degrees C. These results suggest lettuce treated with warm water and irradiated at 0.5 or 1 kGy had the best sensory quality without significant loss in texture, vitamin C, or total antioxidants. 相似文献
Nephrolithiasis has rarely been reported in marine mammals. During 2004 and 2005, two cases of nephrolithiasis were diagnosed during routine necropsy examination, one in a northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) and one in a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). Nephroliths were found throughout both kidneys during necropsy examination, varying in size from 1-10 mm in diameter in the northern elephant seal and from 1-15 mm in diameter in the California sea lion. Necropsy and histopathology revealed nephroliths in association with renal pelvic dilation and pyelonephritis in both animals. In addition, hydronephrosis was noted in the sea lion. Nephroliths were composed of uric acid and ammonium urate in the northern elephant seal and of ammonium urate in the California sea lion. The underlying disease leading to nephrolith formation was not determined; however, it is hypothesized that unknown metabolic derangements due to morphologic or physiologic differences may have played a role.
