Severe anemia associated with Mycoplasma wenyonii infection in a mature cow

The clinical findings, diagnostic tests, and treatment of clinical anemia in a mature Angus cow infected with the hemoplasma Mycoplasma wenyonii are described. Mycoplasma wenyonii has been previously reported to cause clinical anemia in young or splenectomized cattle; however, infection has not been associated with severe anemia in mature animals.     

Multiple magnet ingestion as a cause of septic peritonitis in a dog

A 1 yr old male castrated Yorkshire terrier was referred after ingesting magnets. Dehydration, fever, tachycardia, and abdominal pain were noted on physical examination. Abdominal radiographs revealed two radiopaque foreign objects in close proximity to each other with decreased abdominal detail. Surgical exploration identified magnets adhered together in the omentum with perforations present in the transverse colon and stomach. The perforations were closed and a Jackson-Pratt continuous suction drain was placed. Septic peritonitis secondary to intestinal perforation from magnet ingestion was successfully treated with a combination of surgery and a closed suction drain.     

Rise to power: a case study of male fecal androgen and cortisol levels before and after a non-aggressive rank change in a group of wild white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus)

We examined fecal androgen and cortisol levels in three adult male white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) before and after a non-aggressive rank increase in one habituated group residing in the Santa Rosa Sector of the área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Fecal samples (n = 116) were collected opportunistically between July 2006 and July 2007. Alpha males had higher mean androgen levels than subordinates, and acquisition of the alpha position was linked to an immediate increase in mean androgens. Cortisol levels also increased in the alpha male after acquisition of his new rank, though this increase was delayed relative to the change in rank. These results indicate that, during a non-aggressive rank change, androgen and cortisol levels in male white-faced capuchins are physiological responses to dominance rank, rather than precursors that facilitate rank acquisition.     

NFAT binding and regulation of T cell activation by the cytoplasmic scaffolding Homer proteins

T cell receptor (TCR) and costimulatory receptor (CD28) signals cooperate in activating T cells, although understanding of how these pathways are themselves regulated is incomplete. We found that Homer2 and Homer3, members of the Homer family of cytoplasmic scaffolding proteins, are negative regulators of T cell activation. This is achieved through binding of nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) and by competing with calcineurin. Homer-NFAT binding was also antagonized by active serine-threonine kinase AKT, thereby enhancing TCR signaling via calcineurin-dependent dephosphorylation of NFAT. This corresponded with changes in cytokine expression and an increase in effector-memory T cell populations in Homer-deficient mice, which also developed autoimmune-like pathology. These results demonstrate a further means by which costimulatory signals are regulated to control self-reactivity.     

Circadian phase-shifting effects of a laboratory environment: a clinical trial with bright and dim light

Background  

Our aims were to examine the influence of different bright light schedules on mood, sleep, and circadian organization in older adults (n = 60, ages 60–79 years) with insomnia and/or depression, contrasting with responses of young, healthy controls (n = 30, ages 20–40 years).     

The genotypic and phenotypic interaction of wheat and rye storage proteins in primary triticale

The creation of new triticale germplasm from its wheat and rye progenitors is an important source of potentially beneficial alleles. This research focused on the inheritance of glutenin and secalin alleles in triticale and their interaction in the hybrid offspring in terms of both subunit expression and gluten strength. Multiple crosses between five durum lines and two inbred rye lines were performed to create a set of 23 fertile amphidiploid lines. The SDS-PAGE banding patterns of the denatured HMW glutenins, LMW glutenins, HMW secalins and 75k γ-secalins (termed secaloglutenin) were compared to their exact parental plants, and their SDS-sedimentation was evaluated. Secaloglutenin subunits were simply inherited and expressed in all primary triticales. The few observed variations in banding patterns were accounted for within measured heterogeneity of the exact rye parental plants, for which the secalin alleles were thoroughly described. However, the possibility remains that mixed protein oligomers were formed between polymeric and monomeric storage proteins at the ultrastructure level. Furthermore, significant differences in the gluten strength of primaries derived from different durum parents were observed. This research suggests triticale of high gluten strength can be obtained by selection of parents with favourable glutenin alleles.     

Carpal intra-articular blastomycosis in a Labrador retriever

A 6-month-old male castrated Labrador retriever was presented for coughing and forelimb lameness. Blastomyces dermatitidis was identified in cytology of sputum and synovial fluid. Repeat arthrocentesis 7 months later revealed resolution of septic arthritis. Fungal septic arthritis should be considered for cases of monoarthritis and may respond to oral itraconazole treatment.
