A comparison of the free hydrogen ion concentration and the total hydrogen ion concentration of rain samples shows that rain is a weak acid. To establish chronic infections, viruses must develop strategies to evade the host's immune responses. Many retroviruses, including mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV), are transmitted most efficiently through mucosal surfaces rich in microbiota. We found that MMTV, when ingested by newborn mice, stimulates a state of unresponsiveness toward viral antigens. This process required the intestinal microbiota, as antibiotic-treated mice or germ-free mice did not transmit infectious virus to their offspring. MMTV-bound bacterial lipopolysaccharide triggered Toll-like receptor 4 and subsequent interleukin-6 (IL-6)-dependent induction of the inhibitory cytokine IL-10. Thus, MMTV has evolved to rely on the interaction with the microbiota to induce an immune evasion pathway. Together, these findings reveal the fundamental importance of commensal microbiota in viral infections. 相似文献

AIM: To investigate the anthelmintic properties of New Zealand native flax (Phormium tenax) for cattle, using a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). METHODS: Twenty-six heifer calves with high (>300 epg) faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) were paired into two groups and fed either chopped flax leaves ad libitum, or barley straw at an equivalent dry matter (DM) rate, from Day 0–7; all were supplemented with 1.5 kg/head/day cereal feed supplement. On Days 8–10, all heifers were fed a common diet of 3.5 kg DM/ head/day barley straw and 1.5 kg/head/day cereal feed supplement. Heifers were weighed and faecal samples were collected on Days —6, 0, 7, and 10; samples were analysed in triplicate for FEC. The nutritive value of the flax and straw was analysed. RESULTS: Both the flax and straw had low dry matter digestibility (DMD) and protein content. Although the flax-fed claves grew more than the controls, this may have been related to gut fill. Total daily faecal egg output was similar for flax and straw groups on Day 7 (14.7 vs 15.0 x 106 eggs/day, respectively) and Day 10 (14.9 vs 15.1 x 106 eggs/day, respectively). There was no difference in the change in FEC with time between the calves fed flax or straw diets. CONCLUSION: Consumption of flax leaves did not reduce FEC in calves with a mixed nematode infection. 相似文献

The bacterial load and degree of antibiotic resistance present in untreated and antibiotic‐treated semen samples were investigated in five bulls standing at a cattle‐breeding centre. Bacterial load was determined by colony counts from semen samples cultured on brain heart infusion and nutrient agar plates. Antibiotic resistance in these bacteria was assessed by measuring the diameter of bacterial growth inhibition zones around discs containing different concentrations of antibiotics. Representative antibiotic‐resistant bacterial isolates were selected for identification. Untreated semen contained few culturable bacteria, and all were completely sensitive to gentamycin, spectinomycin and lincomycin: six of the isolates showed some resistance to tylosin. In semen to which antibiotics had been added as part of the routine production process, two isolates were sensitive to all of the antibiotics tested, and the remainder were resistant to all. Resistant Gram‐negative isolates that were identified included Pseudomonas and Stenotrophomonas spp. both in the class Gammaproteobacteria and a Sphingomonas sp. which is in the class Alphaproteobacteria. 相似文献

Poultry litter leachate (PLL) is known to contain a variety of contaminants including endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). This study analyzed the presence of steroids and contaminants in samples of poultry litter from a broiler poultry operation in Maryland, USA. Litter samples were homogenized, hydrated, incubated for two time periods (4 and 24?h) at two temperatures (20°C and 37°C), filtered, and analyzed for steroids and anthropogenic contaminants. In addition, duplicate samples were spiked with 17?\?? estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T), and ??-glucuronidase and aryl sulfatase, to measure steroid recovery and the presence of conjugates, respectively. A steroid recovery rate of 71 and 73% was obtained from E2 and T spiked samples, respectively. Increased incubation duration demonstrated an increased trend in E2 and a decreased trend in androgen (T and/or dihydrotestosterone [DHT]) concentrations, regardless of temperature. In contrast, increased incubation temperature displayed different trends in E2 and androgen concentrations. High temperature with a 4-h incubation resulted in an increased trend in androgen with no effect on E2. However, after 24?h of incubation at high temperature, an increased trend in E2 was observed with no effect on androgen. The presence of de-conjugating enzymes resulted in a greatly increased trend in T concentrations with a slight increased trend of E2 concentrations. Trace amounts of several metals and anthropogenic compounds were detected. Arsenic, barium, endosulfan, and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate were detected at quantifiable levels. This study demonstrates that PLL contains potential EDCs and contaminants that can be toxic to, and bioaccumulate in, aquatic fauna. Determination of EDC concentrations in environmental samples is important to elucidate potential detrimental effects of agricultural runoff on aquatic wildlife. 相似文献

In southeastern pine–oak ecosystems, ecological restoration targets oaks for removal by chemical, mechanical, burning, or combinations of treatments. Managers often pursue oak removal indiscriminately despite the poorly understood historical structure, cover, and ecological function within these ecosystems. Restoration treatments often cite the impediment that oak litter represents to prescribed fire spread and effectiveness. We evaluated the burning characteristics of eight southeastern Quercus spp. by burning collected litter under controlled conditions in a combustion chamber. Replicated burns consisted of 15 g of litter on a 35 cm × 35 cm grid of xylene-soaked cotton strings. Burning characteristics measured included maximum flame height (cm), flaming duration (s), smoldering duration (s), residual ash, and mass loss rate (g s−1). We compared all 8 oaks using ANCOVA, with litterbed depth as a covariate. The oaks differed for all burning characteristics measured (P < 0.001). Rank comparisons placed Quercus stellata and Quercus laevis as the species with greatest fire intensity, sustainability, and consumability, equivalent in many measures to longleaf pine and other fire resisters. Quercus virginiana and Quercus hemisphaerica burned with the least intensity, sustainability, and consumability, burning similarly to sand pine and other fire evaders. These results show that oaks common to southeastern United States ecosystems have litter properties, similar to pines, which vary in their ability to sustain fire. Understanding the pyric properties of oak species also suggests that managers prioritize removal of species that hinder prescribed fire effectiveness for restoration of southeastern USA pine–oak ecosystems. 相似文献
