During late 1999/early 2000, the solid state imaging experiment on the Galileo spacecraft returned more than 100 high-resolution (5 to 500 meters per pixel) images of volcanically active Io. We observed an active lava lake, an active curtain of lava, active lava flows, calderas, mountains, plateaus, and plains. Several of the sulfur dioxide-rich plumes are erupting from distal flows, rather than from the source of silicate lava (caldera or fissure, often with red pyroclastic deposits). Most of the active flows in equatorial regions are being emplaced slowly beneath insulated crust, but rapidly emplaced channelized flows are also found at all latitudes. There is no evidence for high-viscosity lava, but some bright flows may consist of sulfur rather than mafic silicates. The mountains, plateaus, and calderas are strongly influenced by tectonics and gravitational collapse. Sapping channels and scarps suggest that many portions of the upper approximately 1 kilometer are rich in volatiles.  相似文献

Galileo images of Gaspra reveal it to be an irregularly shaped object (19 by 12 by 11 kilometers) that appears to have been created by a catastrophic collisional disruption of a precursor parent body. The cratering age of the surface is about 200 million years. Subtle albedo and color variations appear to correlate with morphological features: Brighter materials are associated with craters especially along the crests of ridges, have a stronger 1-micrometer absorption, and may represent freshly excavated mafic materials; darker materials exhibiting a significantly weaker 1-micrometer absorption appear concentrated in interridge areas. One explanation of these patterns is that Gaspra is covered with a thin regolith and that some of this material has migrated downslope in some areas.  相似文献

A neurophysiological assay developed previously was used to assess the incidence of nerve insensitivity resistance to synthetic pyrethroids in field strains of Helicoverpa armigera. Almost 70% of individuals from a sample of a highly pyrethroid-resistant population from Jiangsu Province, China were nerve-insensitive. Subsequent selection resulted in a strain homogeneous for expression of this mechanism. Likewise, over 95% of a sample from a strain of the insects from Andhra Pradesh, India were nerve-insensitive and a homogeneous strain was developed. Development of a nerve-insensitive laboratory strain of Heliothis virescens was undertaken but homozygosity could not be obtained. It is suggested that high fitness costs may be associated with this mechanism. The incidence of nerve insensitivity in Heliothine pests is reviewed and the role of phenotypic expression assays in molecular studies highlighted. ©1997 SCI  相似文献

Objective To evaluate the effect of ephedrine on intramuscular blood flow and hemodynamic parameters during equine anesthesia. Study design Prospective experimental study. Animals Six healthy adult Welsh Mountain ponies (five males, one female, mean weight: 267 kg, range: 213–347 kg). Methods Halothane‐anesthetized ponies received an IV bolus of ephedrine (0.1 mg kg?1), followed 30 minutes later by a second IV ephedrine injection (0.2 mg kg?1). Changes in intramuscular blood flows (IMBF) in upper and lower triceps brachii were measured by laser Doppler flowmetry. Cardiopulmonary measurements were made at intervals for 30 minutes following each injection. Results were compared with values from a control group, similarly anesthetized but given saline in an earlier study. Results Ephedrine at either dose increased heart rate, arterial blood pressure (AP), cardiac index (CI) and intramuscular blood flow (IMBF), the effects on these parameters being significant and long‐lasting following the higher dose. Systemic vascular resistance remained unchanged, and was significantly lower than in the control saline group. PaO2 decreased significantly immediately following the first injection of ephedrine, then remained unchanged for the remainder of the experiment. PaCO2 increased slowly throughout the anesthetic period. One pony developed supraventricular premature complexes following the second injection. No other side effects were seen. Conclusion Ephedrine at dose rates of 0.2 mg kg?1 IV consistently increased in CI, AP, and IMBF in both forelimbs. Clinical relevance Ephedrine may be of use to improve AP, CI and IMBF during halothane anesthesia, although the occurrence of an arrhythmia in one pony is of concern.  相似文献

Background: Ultrasound‐guided fine needle aspiration of the spleen is commonly used in the diagnostic evaluation of veterinary patients. Techniques using suction delivered through a 6–20‐cm3 syringe are the most commonly described means of obtaining cytologic samples of the spleen. Comparison studies of various human lesions have shown nonaspiration techniques to produce equal or superior cytologic specimens with less blood than specimens obtained using aspiration techniques. Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of splenic cytology specimens obtained using aspiration and nonaspiration techniques. Methods: Client‐owned dogs (n=24) and cats (n=7) receiving an abdominal ultrasound at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine were enrolled in the study between January and June 2005. Samples were obtained from patients with and without sonographic splenic abnormalities. Two clinical pathologists, working independently and blinded to the method of sample collection, graded the cytologic specimens using a subjective scoring system for cellularity, amount of blood, and preservation of cellular morphology. Results: Agreement between the 2 independent observers was good. Direct comparison of the 2 techniques showed that samples obtained by the nonaspiration method had higher cellularity (P=.0002), less blood (P=.0023), and similar cell morphology (P=1.0000) compared with samples obtained by the aspiration method. Conclusion: These results suggest the nonaspiration technique is a superior method for obtaining a high‐quality cytologic specimen from the canine and feline spleen.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare the recovery after anaesthesia with isoflurane, sevoflurane and desflurane in dogs undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain.Study designProspective, randomized clinical trial.AnimalsThirty‐eight dogs weighing 23.7 ± 12.6 kg.MethodsFollowing pre‐medication with meperidine, 3 mg kg?1 administered intramuscularly, anaesthesia was induced intravenously with propofol (mean dose 4.26 ± 1.3 mg kg?1), the trachea was intubated, and an inhalational anaesthetic agent was administered in oxygen. The dogs were randomly allocated to one of three groups: group I (n = 13) received isoflurane, group S (n = 12) received sevoflurane and group D (n = 13) received desflurane. Parameters recorded included cardiopulmonary data, body temperature, end‐tidal anaesthetic concentration, duration of anaesthesia, and recovery times and quality. Qualitative data were compared using chi‐squared and Fisher's exact tests and quantitative data with anova and Kruskal–Wallis test. Post‐hoc comparisons for quantitative data were undertaken with the Mann–Whitney U‐test.ResultsThe duration of anaesthesia [mean and standard deviation (SD)] in group I was: 105.3 (27.48) minutes, group S: 120.67 (19.4) minutes, and group D: 113.69 (26.68) minutes (p = 0.32). Times to extubation [group I: 8 minutes, (interquartile range 6–9.5), group S: 7 minutes (IQR 5–7), group D: 5 minutes (IQR 3.5–7), p = 0.017] and to sternal recumbency [group I: 11 minutes (IQR 9.5–13.5), group S: 9.5 minutes (IQR 7.25–11.75), group D: 7 minutes (range 3.5–11.5), p = 0.048] were significantly different, as were times to standing. One dog, following sevoflurane, had an unacceptable quality of recovery, but most other recoveries were calm, with no significant difference between groups.Conclusions and clinical relevanceAll three agents appeared suitable for use. Dogs’ tracheas were extubated and the dogs recovered to sternal recumbency most rapidly after desflurane. This may be advantageous for animals with some neurological diseases and for day case procedures.  相似文献
