Wheat plants were grown in an atmosphere containing 14CO2 at temperatures of 10°C or 18°C for periods from 3–8 weeks. The plant roots were maintained under sterile or non-sterile conditions in soil contained in sealed pots which were flushed to displace respired 14CO2. The 14C content of the shoots, roots and soil was measured at harvest. The loss of 14C from the roots, expressed either in terms of total 14C recovered from the pots or 14C translocated to the roots, ranged from 14.3–22.6%, mean 17.3% or 29.2–44.4%, mean 39.2%, respectively. The presence of soil microorganisms significantly increased 14CO2 release from the rhizosphere but had no effect on the 14C content of the soil. Fractionation of 6 m HC1 hydrolysates from sterile and non-sterile soils showed the presence in all soils of material behaving as neutral sugars and amino acids, in quantities representing 5.9–9.2% and 13.4–17.2% of the soil 14C content for the sugar and amino acid fractions respectively. It is proposed that a major loss of root carbon resulted from autolysis of the root cortex. Root lysis was increased by soil microorganisms, apparently without penetration of the plant cell walls.  相似文献

The effects of five environmental factors on variation in the rate of C2H2 reduction in two cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) and two soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) cultivars were examined at two stages of growth in the field. Diurnal changes in C2H2 reduction, estimated as μmoles C2H4 produced·g?1 nodules·h?1, over a 30 h period were compared with changes in soil, canopy and air temperatures, global radiation, and vapour pressure deficit. Although the environmental factors showed one maximum and one minimum during a diurnal cycle, the C2H2 reduction rate in nodulated cowpea roots showed two peaks: one between 0600–1200 and another between 1800–2400 and two minima: one between 1200–1600 and another between 2400–0600. Variation in C2H2 reduction in soybean nodules did not show any definite pattern. Vapour pressure deficit appeared the most likely factor influencing the decline in C2H2 reduction between 1200–1600.The rate of C2H2 reduction in cowpeas was greater at the pre-flower than at the early pod-fill period; the rate in soybeans was not greatly different at early flower or early pod-fill.  相似文献

The grey squirrel is recognised as a pest species of economic importance but the justification of the view appears to be founded on local areas of severe damage. Despite evidence that damage may not be alleviated by squirrel population destruction, Warfarin poisoning was introduced as an alternative to trapping.The utilisation by wildlife of a poison hopper designed for grey squirrel control was investigated by automatic photography. Results confirmed that a number of species may feed from the grain presented via the hopper. However, the majority of the bait was removed during the hours of darkness when grey squirrels were not active. It is a conservative estimate that between 55 and 65% of the grain entered the environment via animals other than squirrels.In addition, the removalof bait by night visitors resulted in the accumulation of large quantities of bait at and around the entrance to the hopper tunnel. This increased accessibility to the potentially poisoned bait by animals other than squirrels.Until such time as evidence is produced to show these results as exceptional, it can only be concluded that fears expressed over the lack of specificity of this method of control are justified.  相似文献

Runner hyphae of Gaeumannomyces graminis (Sacc.) Arx & Olivier var. tritici Walker on seminal roots of wheat seedlings were photographed and their length measured. As well, their length was estimated using the line-intercept method. The correlation of 0.904 between measured and estimated lengths of hyphae was highly significant. This line intercept method was used to estimate the density (length/unit area) of hyphae on roots of plants growing in the presence and absence of a soil suppressive to G. graminis var. tritici. Estimations were made eight times during 28 days growth at 15°C. In fumigated soil (non-suppressive) inoculated with 0.1% ground oat grain infested with G. graminis var. tritici, the density of hyphae on roots started to increase at five days compared with 15 days when soil there was a 10.8% cover of the root surface after 15 days when the hyphae had reached maximum density. Suppression to G. graminis var. tritici is normally detected by a difference in disease rating of roots at 28 days but this study has shown that suppression can be demonstrated by the difference in the density of hyphae if roots are examined between seven and 19 days.  相似文献

A survey was made in 1972, of the status of Rhododendron pronticum L. at Winterton, Norfolk, and aerial photographs were used to assess its spread in recent years. The ecological implications of the continuing presence of this invsive alien shrub on the dunes are discussed. Comparisons with the highly successfull dune shrub Hippophaë rhamnoides L. help put into perspective the present and likely future role of Rhododendron at Winterton. The implications of controls are discussed together with methods by which this may be achieved.  相似文献

The profile distribution of Be is given for a toposequence of podzols, brown earths, stagnogley, forest bog and “Ockererde” (slope gley with infiltrated Al, Mn and Fe). Analysed were the parent rock, fine earth, four fractions of mineral soil (fine skeleton, sand, silt, clay) and the needles of spruce trees.Beryllium is involved in selective weathering processes of elements. Accordingly, the Be-content increases from the fine skeleton to sand, rock, silt and clay, progressively. Through pedogenetic enrichment, Be accumulates in the mica-rich silt fraction.Uptake of Be by spruce is very low even from these acid soils. The accumulation in the needles becomes greater with increasing age.The pedochemical behaviour of Be is very similar to that of Al.Be is incorporated very little in the organic matter cycle, and is therefore not enriched in the soil humus.The brown earth has lost Be, especially in the Ah-horizon.In the Ae-horizon of the podzol, loss of Be is even greater; the loss is partly offset by Be-enrichment in the B-horizon.In the profiles of depressions, the Be-content is high and is ascribed to lateral flow from the slopes. Be-enrichment is especially high in horizons with a pH of about 5.The Be-balance of the watershed indicates an export of about 10% of the original amount.  相似文献

Two biological assays were conducted in which the antirachitic activity in chicks of 5,6-trans-vitamin D3 added to feed is compared with that of 5,6-cis-vitamin D3. On the basis of the results obtained it is concluded that the relative potency of the trans isomer is, at the most, 5% and that the antirachitic activity of the trans isomer is not markedly enhanced (an increase to a relative potency of 16%, at the most) if the cis isomer is also included in the diet. The results are not conclusive on the inhibition or lack of inhibition of the antirachitic activity of 5,6-cis-vitamin D3 by the presence of 5,6-trans-vitamin D3 in the feed.  相似文献

The dry matter and crude protein production of the perennial ryegrass varieties S24, S23, Premo, Houba, Barlenna, Melle and Sceempter Pasture at annual nitrogen application rates of 212, 425, 637 and 1062 kg ha?1 were studied for the years 1972–74 inclusive. The DM and CP response curves for the variety Melle were steeper than those for other varieties tested and levelled off at a higher N application rate. The results suggest that Melle is a variety with a genotype capahle of utilizing N more efficiently at higher rates than the other varieties tested.  相似文献
