1. The crucian carp Carassius carassius is a species of cyprinid fish native to south‐east England, but few studies exist on its growth and reproduction in England, and the species is threatened by introductions of its Asiatic congener, goldfish Carassius auratus. To increase knowledge of the crucian carp as a means of aiding its conservation, the present study assesses the growth (back‐calculated length at age, body condition) and reproduction (fecundity, egg size, length and age at maturity) of crucian carp in small ponds of Epping Forest (north‐east London, England).
2. Evaluation of growth and reproduction data with published data for populations from northern Europe (i.e. latitude ?50°) suggest that growth is very variable, even within the same area, and that data on reproductive indices, in particular length and age at maturity, are scarce. In England, the length at age trajectory of crucian carp living in sympatry with feral goldfish Carassius auratus did not differ significantly from allopatric crucian carp populations, but crucian carp body condition and relative fecundity (eggs per body weight) were highest, and mean age and standard length at maturity were lowest in sympatry with goldfish.
3. These data suggest that somatic growth and reproductive output may be maximized in crucian carp when confronted by coexistence with feral goldfish. However, the potential impact of goldfish introductions on crucian carp growth and reproduction requires further study, involving a much larger number of crucian carp populations, both in allopatry and sympatry with feral goldfish populations.
The aim of this work was to investigate whether the Penh index, measured using whole body barometric plethysmography, can be used as a screening parameter to evaluate the airway reactivity and the intensity of the pulmonary response to endotoxins. Penh was firstly recorded in non-sedated freely moving piglets exposed (1) to a nebulized acetylcholine (Ach) pre-treated or not with clenbuterol, or (2) to endotoxin challenge. To measure Penh simultaneously with total pulmonary resistance (R(L)), dynamic compliance (C(dyn)) and intrapleural pressure changes (Max Delta Ppl), an oesophageal balloon catheter technique was used and the piglets were anaesthetised. The recordings were performed during (1) an intravenous metacholine (Mch) challenge and (2) in endotoxin-exposed animals. In freely moving animals, Ach induced a significant dose-dependent increase in Penh, which was significantly blocked by clenbuterol. Endotoxin instillation also resulted in a significant rise in Penh while the corresponding response measured under anaesthesia was significantly and positively correlated with R(L) and Max Delta Ppl. Similar results were obtained during Mch challenge but the Penh was negatively correlated with C(dyn). We conclude that Penh could be used in freely moving piglets as a screening index for airway reactivity and pulmonary functional changes in cholinergic and endotoxin challenges. 相似文献
Six isolates of Magnaporthe grisea were selected to inoculate on 10 Chinese leading maintainer lines (B-lines), 14 restorer lines (R-lines) and their F1 hybrid plants. In the tested rice materials, R-lines were proved to be more resistant to blast than B-lines. The resistance frequency of about 25% F1 hybrid plants was less than their parents. In addition, 26 isolates of M. grisea collected from different rice growing areas of China were inoculated on 13 new improved hybrid rice combinations. The resistance frequencies of 5 improved hybrids were better than those of the controls and leading varieties in rice production of China. 相似文献
Seismic discontinuities in Earth typically arise from structural, chemical, or temperature variations with increasing depth. The pressure-induced iron spin state transition in the lower mantle may influence seismic wave velocities by changing the elasticity of iron-bearing minerals, but no seismological evidence of an anomaly exists. Inelastic x-ray scattering measurements on (Mg(0.83)Fe(0.17))O-ferropericlase at pressures across the spin transition show effects limited to the only shear moduli of the elastic tensor. This explains the absence of deviation in the aggregate seismic velocities and, thus, the lack of a one-dimensional seismic signature of the spin crossover. The spin state transition does, however, influence shear anisotropy of ferropericlase and should contribute to the seismic shear wave anisotropy of the lower mantle. 相似文献
As part of the 2015 Paris climate agreement and under its Green Deal, the EU proposes to strongly rely on forests for offsetting its carbon footprint. However, planting trees should be avoided in wildfire prone and drought prone habitats, which are expanding significantly as climate warms across Europe. In favorable habitats, tree planting remains a controversial solution and the risk of using inappropriate material is high in the absence of long-term planning, unfortunately typical of the forest seed and nursery sector. The EU forest tree planting strategy should pay close attention to local land-use issues, to within- and among-species genetic diversity and should adopt relevant, pluri-annual funding schemes and planting contracts rather than letting market opportunities govern the future of forest tree plantations.
Coquillettidia mosquitoes are not efficiently controlled by the conventional chemical practices which are known to be satisfactory against the larvae of other mosquito species. A research project was undertaken to conceive a new management strategy using plants as pesticide vectors to reach the Coquillettidia aquatic larvae. Therefore, larval mortality was measured in the presence of plants treated with phloem-translocated pesticides. The herbicide glyphosate at sub-lethal concentrations induced root epidermal cell lyses in maize plantlets cultivated in aqueous media, which clearly decreased larval fixation. Therefore, such herbicide strategy might operate through disturbing the larval physiological activities depending on fixation. The dimethoate insecticide did not affect root viability but at low concentrations seemed to disturb the plant–insect interactions. Larvae showed a lower attraction for roots and a considerable decrease in the root fixation rate. These larval behavior modifications were sufficient to induce mortality, probably due to a lack of fixation on plant roots. The effectiveness of plant foliar treatment with glyphosate or dimethoate under laboratory conditions suggested that it might be the basis for an efficient control strategy for Coquillettidia larvae and mosquitoes having the same living conditions in ponds and for which fixation on macrophyte roots is an absolute requirement (e.g.Mansonia, Mimomyia). 相似文献
Understory plant biomass, species richness and canopy openness were measured in six-year old hybrid poplar riparian buffer
strips, in the understory of two unrelated clones (MxB-915311 and DxN-3570), planted along headwater streams at three pasture
sites of southern Quebec. Canopy openness was an important factor affecting understory biomass in hybrid poplar buffers, with
lower understory biomass observed on sites and under the clone with lower canopy openness. Although tree size was an important
factor affecting canopy openness, relationships between total stem volume and canopy openness, for each clone, also support
the hypothesis of a clonal effect on canopy openness. Understory biomass and canopy openness as low as 3.6 g m−2 and 7.6% in 1 m2 microplots were measured under clone MxB-915311 at the most productive site. This reduction of understory plant growth could
compromise important buffer functions for water quality protection (runoff control, sediment trapping and surface soil stabilisation),
particularly were concentrated runoff flow paths enter the buffer. On the other hand, tree buffers that maintain relatively
low canopy openness could be interesting to promote native and wetland plant diversity. Significant positive relationships
between canopy openness and introduced species richness (R2 = 0.46, p < 0.001) and cover (R2 = 0.51, p < 0.001) were obtained, while no significant relationship was observed between canopy openness and native (wetland) species
richness and cover. These results suggest that planting riparian buffer strips of fast-growing trees can rapidly lead to the
exclusion of shade-intolerant introduced species, typical colonisers of disturbed habitats such as riparian areas of pastures,
while having no significant effect on native (wetland) diversity. Forest canopy created by the poplars was probably an important
physical barrier controlling introduced plant richness and abundance in agricultural riparian corridors. A strong linear relationship
(R2 = 0.73) between mean total species richness and mean introduced species richness was also observed, supporting the hypothesis
that the richest communities are the most invaded by introduced species, possibly because of higher canopy openness, as seen
at the least productive site (low poplar growth). Finally, results of this study highlight the need for a better understanding
of relationships between tree growth, canopy openness, understory biomass and plant diversity in narrow strips of planted
trees. This would be useful in designing multifunctional riparian buffer systems in agricultural landscapes. 相似文献
