A6 1/2‐month‐old Morgan filly was examined because of a history of abnormal behavior, teeth grinding, hypothermia, and electrolyte disturbances when weaned. She was from a breeding farm with several other Morgan horses. The 11‐year‐old dam had been purchased the year before as a proven broodmare, which had several previous foals. Breeding, gestation, and birth of this foal were normal. She was raised with 4 other mares and their offspring on pasture with free access to shelter in an open barn. Supplementary feeding consisted of oats and timothy hay. The owners reported that the foal showed unusual behavior, such as lack of apprehension of people, lack of distress from maternal separation, and a higher activity level than other foals of the same age. The foal extensively chewed the dam's tail and mane, masticated oats slowly with rapid jaw movements without actually swallowing them, and ground her teeth. She frequently nibbled the handler's clothes without biting, ate pebbles, and played with the salt block in the paddock. At 4 1/2 months of age, she was treated for suspected gastroduodenal ulcers and weaned. The referring veterinarian examined her 5 days after weaning because of dull demeanor and excessive teeth grinding. The foal was in thin body condition, hypothermic (37°C, 98.6°F), and tachycardic (60 beats per minute [bpm]) and had decreased borborygmi. Major abnormalities on serum biochemistry were severe hypernatremia (166 mmol/L; reference range 136–144 mmol/L) and hyperchloremia (128 mmol/L; reference range 94–104 mmol/L), azotemia (urea, 11.3 mmol/L; reference range 4.2–8.9 mmol/L), and hyperfibrinogenemia (5.2 g/L, reference range 1.6–2.9 g/L). The only abnormality on the CBC was hemoconcentration (PCV, 0.57 L/L; reference range 0.28–0.44 L/L). The foal was treated with penicillin procaine Ga (20,000 IU/kg [9072 IU/1b] IM q12h) and rifampinb (5 mg/kg [2.7 mg/1b] PO q8h). The next day the tachycardia worsened (120 bpm) and the foal was estimated to be 5–8% dehydrated. IV fluid therapy with lactated Ringer solutionc (LRS) was initiated, and the antibiotic was changed to ceftiofurd (2 mg/kg [0.91 mg/1b] IV q12h). The foal and dam were rejoined, and the foal's clinical status improved with resumption of nursing. Serial laboratory testing showed persistent hypernatremia 160 mmol/L) and hyperchloremia (123 mmol/L), azotemia urea 11.3 mmol/L and creatinine 168 umol/L; reference range 80–130 μmol/L), hyperglycemia (8.7 mmol/L; reference range 3.7–6.7 mmol/L), high aspartate aminotranferase activity (662 U/L; reference range 259–595 U/L), and high creatine kinase (CK) activity (1,196 U/L; reference range 108–430 U/L). The foal's condition improved and IV fluids were discontinued. Ceftiofur administration was discontinued and trimethoprim‐sulfamethoxazolee (25 mg/kg [11.3 mg/1b] PO q12h) was administered for 3 days. During the next month the foal was stable but the abnormal behavior persisted. She was weaned again, and within days marked behavior changes such as circling, throwing the head around compulsively, and severe hind‐end shivering recurred. At examination, the foal was dull, tachycardic (60 bpm), was hypothermic (33.6°C, 92.5°F), had dark red mucous membranes, and was estimated to be 5% dehydrated. Laboratory findings were similar to those of the previous tests except for high fibrinogen (7.1 g/L). The house dust mites Dermatophagoides farinae (Df) and D. pteronyssinus (Dpt) are commonly implicated as allergens causing canine atopic dermatitis in the UK. However, there are few studies that characterize the exposure of UK pet dogs to these mites. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of the mite species on the skin, hair coat and bedding of a population of pet dogs. Dust samples (n = 68) were collected from both dogs and their beds using a standardized vacuuming technique and stored at -20 degrees C. Mites were identified using accepted morphological criteria. House dust mite allergen concentrations were assayed using standardized ELISA for Dpt and Df group 1 allergens (Der p 1 and Der f 1). Mites were identified in 15/68 samples (22%) and Dpt was the most common. Df mites were not present. Der p 1 allergens were detected in 60% of samples, and Der f 1 in 6% of samples. There were no significant differences between the number of Der p 1 positive samples from dogs and the number of those from their bedding, or between the average Der p 1 concentrations from dogs and the number of those from their bedding. Contrary to studies elsewhere in Europe and the USA, these findings support studies of human asthma patients in the UK, where exposure to Df is rare, but to Dpt is common. As the prevalence of positive intradermal and serological reactions to Df in atopic dogs is high, further investigations are warranted to clarify true Df hypersensitivity or potential immunological cross-reactivity between mite allergens.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cyclosporine A-induced hyperplastic skin lesions of dogs were associated with papillomavirus infections. ANIMALS: 9 dogs that were treated with cyclosporine A and developed hyperplastic skin lesions. PROCEDURE: History and clinical and histopathologic data were collected. Paraffin-embedded skin biopsy specimens from hyperplastic skin lesions were immunostained for common papillomavirus genus-specific structural antigens by use of a polyclonal rabbit anti-bovine papillomavirus type 1 antiserum. Sections from each tissue block underwent DNA extraction, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were performed with several sets of primers to amplify a wide range of papillomavirus DNA from humans and other animals. RESULTS: In 7 of 9 dogs, there were more than 10 hyperplastic skin lesions that microscopically resembled those of psoriasiform lichenoid dermatosis. In those dogs, results of testing for papillomavirus via immunohistochemical analyses and PCR assays were negative. In the other 2 dogs, there were only 1 and 3 verrucous lesions, and in those dogs, histologic evaluation revealed koilocytes and nuclear viral inclusions that were immunoreactive for papillomavirus antigens. Papillomavirus DNA was amplified from both dogs. One of the sequences was characteristic for the canine oral papillomavirus, whereas the other had similarities with the recently described canine papillomavirus 2. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In dogs, hyperplastic skin lesions occasionally develop during treatment with cyclosporine A. Most of the lesions resemble those of psoriasiform lichenoid dermatosis, although papillomavirus can be detected in some instances.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to identify factors influencing the outcome and prognosis of rupture of the tendon of the peroneus tertius muscle in 27 horses. Information on history, physical examination findings, diagnosis, treatment, and final outcome was summarized from medical records. Long-term follow-up information on horses was obtained by telephone survey. A stepwise logistic regression model was used to analyze factors influencing the outcome. Rupture occurred in the midbody of the tendon in 11 horses, at the insertion site in 11 horses, and at the origin in 2 horses. Overall, 18/23 (78.3%) horses returned to their previous level of exercise, 5/23 (21.7%) horses were euthanized due to persistent lameness. If the horse was racing at the time of injury or had an additional structure injured besides the peroneus tertius tendon, it was less likely to return to its intended use.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess pre-operative behavioral and physiological characteristics of healthy dogs hospitalized for elective surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Open clinical observational study. ANIMALS: Forty-one bitches hospitalized for elective ovariohysterectomy. METHODS: While undisturbed in a hospital cage, the behavior of the dog was recorded using a video camera and recorder. From the video recordings, various behavioral variables were registered. Simultaneous measurements were made on heart rates and heart rate variability (HRV) by use of an ambulatory electrocardiogram. In addition, the dog's response to human approach was noted. RESULTS: Different behavioral patterns were found in the dogs studied. Thirteen individuals were regarded as highly active, and were seen to bark or howl, manipulate the environment or attempt to flee vigorously. In 13 dogs (passive dogs) none of these activities occurred. Panting and displacement behaviors, such as snout licking, were observed in nearly all the animals monitored. In general, heart rates were higher and HRV lower with the most active individuals; however, the presence of physiological arousal could not be excluded in two animals with passive behaviors. To some extent, the behavior of the dog while undisturbed in the cage was reflected in the responses to a person entering the cage. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The different individual responses detected in this study raise an important question concerning their role and existence throughout the entire peri-operative period, especially during the post-anesthetic recovery phase when behavioral characteristics are commonly used to assess patient welfare. The results also emphasize the need for further investigations to explore the effects of pre-operative stressors on canine surgical patients, and the factors contributing to them.  相似文献

A 4-yr-old, 300-kg male Bongo antelope presented a fluctuant swelling on the ventral abdomen surrounding the penis, which was confirmed later as compatible with urethral rupture. Initial treatment included broad-spectrum antibiotic and radical surgical debridement. Total prepuce and partial penile amputation with orchidectomy was performed and normal micturition was restored. At a later stage, when the extent of the lesion was controlled, a permanent scrotal urethrostomy was performed. Complete healing by second intention was achieved 2 mo after the last surgery. Although the outcome was very good, considering the extent and severity of the tissue damage, prompt permanent urethrostomy when urethral rupture was first suspected would have prevented deterioration of the condition and prevented the need for extensive surgery.  相似文献

This study shows that a diet including insect-resistant Bt176 maize, fed to 53 ewes and their progeny for 3 years, did not have adverse effects on their health or performance and that no horizontal gene transfer to ruminal microorganisms or animal tissues was detected. No differences were observed regarding performance, reproductive traits, haematological parameters, antioxidant defences, lymphocyte proliferative capacity, phagocytosis and intracellular killing of macrophages, and ruminal microbial population characteristics between control and genetically modified (GM) maize-fed animals. Immune response to Salmonella abortus ovis vaccination was more efficient in GM maize fed sheep. No modifications of histological features of tissues were found; however, cytochemical analyses of ruminal epithelium by Ki67 staining provided evidence of proliferative activation of basal cells in all GM maize-fed ewes. Preliminary electron microscopy analyses of the liver and pancreas revealed smaller cell nuclei containing increased amounts of heterochromatin and perichromatin granules in GM maize-fed lambs. Meat protein content and water loss by cooking were slightly affected by the dietary treatment. No transgenic DNA was detected in tissues, blood, and ruminal fluid or ruminal bacteria. Longitudinal studies should be included in evaluation of food safety whenever possible and sheep may be a useful animal model for toxicological assessment.  相似文献
