We examined, over the postharvest seasons of 2005–2007, regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) for its potential of saving water and maintaining fruit yield and quality in ‘Summit’ sweet cherry. The postharvest irrigation treatments were: full irrigation (Control), receiving 80% of water in Control (RDI-80%), and receiving 50% of water in Control (RDI-50%). Midday stem water potential (Ψstem) was used for assessing plant water status. In 2006, trees produced a large crop and commercial fruit thinning had to be applied, whereas 2007 was a low crop year. The RDI treatment, first applied in 2005, reduced fruit set in 2006 and also reduced root winter starch concentration. In 2006, fruit set was lower in RDI-50% than in Control. But fruit thinning had still to be done with the final yield being the same among treatments. In 2007, RDI-50% produced more fruit and higher yields than Control. Relationship between postharvest Ψstem and crop load in the following season varied according to the year. They were negatively correlated in 2006 and positively correlated in 2007. Fruit firmness did not vary with irrigation treatments in any of the years. Fruit soluble solid concentration (SSC) and fruit relative dry matter (RDM) for RDI-50% was the highest in 2006 when RDI-50% trees had the lowest fruit set. In 2007, SSC and RDM for RDI-50% were the lowest with the trees having the highest fruit set and crop load at harvest. This study indicates that RDI-50% firstly applied in an “off” year, after crop has been harvested, can maintain fruit yield at similar levels to fully irrigated trees while saving water by 45%. Correction of biennial bearing and partial saving of thinning costs are additional advantages of this treatment.  相似文献

Black currant fruits are recognized as being an important dietary source of health-related compounds, such as anthocyanins and ascorbic acid. In the present study, the biochemical composition (viz., nonstructural carbohydrates, individual anthocyanins, total anthocyanins, total phenolics, and organic acids, including ascorbic acid) from 17 UK-grown black currant cultivars was analyzed. Berry composition was significantly affected by genotype. Nonstructural carbohydrates ranged from 85.09 to 179.92 mg g(-1) on a fresh weight (FW) basis, while concentration for organic acids ranged from 36.56 to 73.35 mg g(-1) FW. Relative concentrations of cyanidin 3-glucoside, cyanidin 3-rutinoside, delphinidin 3-glucoside and delphinidin 3-rutinoside were 3.1-7.9%, 35.4-47.0%, 7.6-12.5% and 36.9-50.9%, respectively. Differences in the biochemical profile among cultivars were emphasized by principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). PCA was able to discriminate between cultivars, especially on the basis of health-related compounds. Initial exploration revealed that individual anthocyanins, total phenolics, and ascorbic acid could be used to characterize and classify different cultivars. HCA showed that the biochemical composition of the different cultivars was related to parentage information.  相似文献

Market integration occurs when prices among different locations or related goods follow similar patterns over time. Current knowledge on market integration between aquaculture and wild-caught fish is based on a small number of species and markets. Most studies show the existence of market integration between wild and farmed conspecifics, with the clear exception of European seabass and gilthead seabream in Southern European countries. In this study, we investigate whether this lack of market integration between wild and farmed conspecifics for European seabass and gilthead seabream in Southern European countries is specific for these species or is representative for the area. Therefore, we investigate the existence of market integration in Spain between wild and farmed conspecifics for a large variety of different species: turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), sole (Solea spp.), blackspot (red) seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), and meagre (Argyrosomus regius).  相似文献

Spatial heterogeneity – in terms of topography, and macro- and microclimatic conditions, among others – results in habitat diversity, which in turn may promote species diversity. Thus, the spatial structure (i.e. spatial variance partitioning at different scales and spatial arrangement of drivers of abundance) of the different feeding guilds within food webs may reflect relevant differences in the way populations interact and how these interactions affect ecosystem processes. Our study focuses on the spatial distribution of animals living in the leaf litter layer of beech forests in the National Parks of northern Spain, across sites which differ in precipitation. Using Generalised Linear Mixed Models we estimated the spatial variance components at different scales and for three feeding guilds in leaf litter food webs: saprophagous and microphytophagous mesofauna, saprophagous macrofauna and zoophagous macrofauna. We found that the only consistently significant source of variation for the three feeding guilds was that at the level of “among valleys within Parks”, which, among other potential explanations, could reflect meso-climatic differences among valleys. We also studied which factors may control spatial variation in these food webs through a model selection approach. Controlling for all other relevant factors, we still found strong differences in abundances among National Parks. Also, invertebrates were more abundant in micro-sites located at the base of slopes – where nutrients and water accumulate – than in micro-sites located on the slopes – which, due to surface runoff, are drier and accumulate fewer nutrients. Also, as found in beech forests of Central Europe, limestone sites have higher abundances of fauna than siliceous sites with lower pH. The macro- and micro-scale dependence of these food webs on water availability could have important consequences for the persistence of these forests under global warming.  相似文献

Prioritizing management actions for wildlife conservation is a difficult task due to the large number of problems relative to available conservation resources and uncertainty about the benefits arising from numerous potential management actions. In this study we use a cost-efficiency protocol to evaluate and prioritize eight different management actions for waterbird community in wetlands throughout southeastern Spain. The protocol generated an action priority ranking based on the costs and predicted benefits of the actions in terms of waterbird carrying capacity. Action prioritization outcomes were also evaluated using population viability analysis models for two of the study species. Removal of dead bird carcasses to prevent disease outbreaks was identified as the most cost efficient action. Removing lead pellets from the sediment was the least efficient strategy. Our approach highlights the role of detailed risk assessment as a form of quality control on the simpler prioritization protocols. We recommend a two-step prioritization protocol based on (i) a rapid, usually simpler prioritization approach for the bulk of species or values being managed, and (ii) a more sophisticated risk assessment for a subset of the species of interest for which detailed risk assessments are tractable. This process strikes a balance between sophistication and practicality.  相似文献

Muscle fluid was investigated as an alternative to serum for detecting anti-hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies in slaughter pigs. Samples of serum and diaphragmatic muscle juice from 67 pigs were analysed by anti-HEV IgG ELISA. Compared to the serum ELISA, the ELISA on diaphragmatic muscle fluid had a sensitivity of 93%, a specificity of 91.7%, a κ value of 0.84 and a determination coefficient (R(2)) of 0.77; both tests had global agreement of results. Muscle fluid can be used as an alternative to serum for serological detection of HEV antibodies in slaughter pigs.  相似文献

Spermiogenesis and the ultrastructural organisation of the spermatozoon of the trypanorhynch cestode Aporhynchus menezesi Noever, Caira, Kuchta et Desjardins, 2010 are described by means of transmission electron microscopy. Type I spermiogenesis of A. menezesi starts with the formation of a differentiation zone containing two centrioles separated by an intercentriolar body constituted by five electron-dense plates. Each centriole gives rise to a free flagellum, which grows at an angle of 90 degrees in relation to a median cytoplasmic process. The nucleus and cortical microtubules elongate along the spermatid body. Later, both flagella rotate and fuse with the median cytoplasmic process. At the final stage of spermiogenesis, the young spermatozoon is detached from the residual cytoplasm by a narrowing of the ring of arched membranes. The mature spermatozoon is a long and filiform cell, tapered at both ends, lacking mitochondria. It is characterized by the presence of two axonemes of the 9+'1' trepaxonematan pattern, the absence of crested bodies, the presence of parallel cortical microtubules and nucleus. This pattern corresponds to the type I spermatozoon of the eucestodes. The anterior extremity of the spermatozoon is characterized by the presence of an arc-like row of up to seven parallel cortical microtubules that partially surrounds the first axoneme. These anterior cortical microtubules are thicker than the posterior microtubules and, consequently, the sperm cell of A. menezesi exhibits two types of cortical microtubules. Another interesting aspect is the presence of alpha-glycogen rosettes. This spermatological pattern is similar to that observed in the spathebothriidean and diphyllobothriidean cestodes.  相似文献

Another hominid skull has been recovered at Dmanisi (Republic of Georgia) from the same strata in which hominid remains have been reported previously. The Dmanisi site dated to approximately 1.75 million years ago has now produced craniofacial portions of several hominid individuals, along with many well-preserved animal fossils and quantities of stone artifacts. Although there are certain anatomical differences among the Dmanisi specimens, the hominids do not clearly represent more than one taxon. We assign the new skull provisionally to Homo erectus (=ergaster). The Dmanisi specimens are the most primitive and small-brained fossils to be grouped with this species or any taxon linked unequivocally with genus Homo and also the ones most similar to the presumed habilis-like stem. We suggest that the ancestors of the Dmanisi population dispersed from Africa before the emergence of humans identified broadly with the H. erectus grade.  相似文献
