Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a small protist parasite in the phylum Microspora. Hosts are infected by ingestion or inhalation of spores passed in the urine or feces. Infection with E. cuniculi is usually asymptomatic, except in young or immunocompromised hosts. This study examined the effects of various disinfectants on in vitro infectivity of E. cuniculi spores. Spores of E. cuniculi were exposed to several dilutions of commercial bleach, 70% ethanol and dilutions of commercial disinfectants HiTor and Roccal for 10 min and then loaded onto human fibroblast cells (Hs68 cells). Ten minutes of exposure to these disinfectants was lethal to E. cuniculi spores. Additional exposure time studies were done using dilutions of bleach at 0.1, 1 and 10%, and 70% ethanol. Exposure of E. cuniculi spores to 1 or 10% bleach for 30s rendered them non-infectious for Hs68 cells. Growth of E. cuniculi was observed in Hs68 cells inoculated with spores treated with 0.1% bleach for 30s or 1, 3 and 5 min, but not with spores treated for 7 min or longer. Exposure of E. cuniculi spores to 70% ethanol for 30s rendered them non-infectious for Hs68 cells. Spores of E. cuniculi are more sensitive to disinfectants than are coccidial oocysts and other parasite cysts. The relatively short contact time needed to kill spores indicates that disinfection of animal housing may be a viable means to reduce exposure of animals to E. cuniculi spores.  相似文献

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the province of Castellón, in eastern Spain, has been one of the most important areas of floor and wall tile production on both a national and worldwide scale. As a result of this sector??s productive rate of development (in the 1970?C2005 interval), a series of pollution-producing chemical substances has been introduced into the atmosphere. The objective of this study is the comparison between industrial?Curban and rural zones in this province, with the goal of establishing the causes of the contamination in order to apply corrective measures upon the different emission sources. Sustainable development is sought after to guarantee that, in the future, the environmental quality parameters fall within legal limits, ensuring the population??s well-being as well as conserving natural ecosystems and material assets. Total suspended particles and PM10 are the parameters studied. The reason for choosing this pollutant type is because particulate matter may present a much higher potential risk despite its low representativeness as compared to the gas pollutant??s group. A positive correlation between high particle concentrations and deterioration in public health has been shown in recent studies. The elements As, Cd, Ni, and Pb in PM10 were also analyzed to determine the toxicity of these particles. This study has demonstrated the different behaviors of the parameters studied at different types of stations (industrial?Curban and rural), leading to the conclusion that anthropogenic factors are very important in the area studied and that they determine the area??s air quality to a great extent.  相似文献

Sawflies (Perga species) are leaf-damaging pests of the major plantation tree species Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus. This work describes the patterns of quantitative genetic variation in susceptibility to attack by Perga affinis ssp. insularis, based on data from a large open-pollinated trial containing genetic material from throughout the geographic range of E. globulus ssp. globulus. Forty three per cent of the trees in the trial exhibited damage from sawflies in either their sixth or seventh growth seasons. The incidence of damage was genetically based, with significant variation between geographic races of E. globulus ssp. globulus and highly heritable (h2=0.43±0.05) variation in damage incidence within races. Susceptibility to sawfly damage significantly affects plant fitness with both genetic and environmental correlations demonstrating that sawfly damage causes slow growth and increased mortality of trees. Mild and severe sawfly damage resulted in 16 and 31% reduction in the basal area of surviving trees, and the effect was consistent across races and families. Based on this data, we propose a model predicting relative plantation productivity of races of different susceptibility under different infestation regimes.  相似文献

An alleycropping system (AC), usingAlbizia julibrissin as the tree species, was compared to an annual legume-based cropping system (NA) over a three-year period. In both AC and NA, a crop rotation was implemented with the following sequence:Mucuna deering iana, Trifolium incarnatum, Sorghum bicolor, Triticale aestivum, andSorghum bicolor. Aboveground biomass of crops was analyzed for C, N, P, K, Ca, and Mg. A soil fractionation method was used to determine P dynamics in different treatments through time. Aboveground net primary productivity (NPP) was higher in the AC than in the NA. Nutrient input-output balance of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg from January through November 1991 was higher for AC than for NA. Area-based sorghum yield in 1991 was lower in AC than in NA. comparative sorghum yield in 1991 at 1 m distance from the hedgerow was lower than NA sorghum. In a three year period, the alleycropping system seemed to be more efficient in tapping unavailable forms of soil P, and achieved a higher P stock than the annual legume-based cropping system.  相似文献

Abstract. Because of the observed variability in soil available P (Olsen) contents, phosphorus budgets were used to predict changes in the soil P status of an intensively managed 6 ha grassland catchment in Northern Ireland. The P accumulation rate of approximately 24 kg/ha/y suggested an increase of soil available P (Olsen) of 1.0 mg P/kg/y. Soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations in drainflow measured on a daily basis for a two year period (January 1981 — December 1982) were compared with the two year period January 1990 — December 1991. The median concentration had increased by 10.0 μg P/1 in 1990/91 compared with 1981/82. This difference was only apparent in mean concentrations for the two time periods, after data associated with high flow events, which were more frequent in 1981/82, were excluded from the comparison. This rate of increase of 1.1 μg P/1/y, which was interpreted as reflecting an increase in soluble reactive phosphorus concentration in soil solution, is comparable to the increase in background soluble reactive phosphorus of 1.5 ± 0.54 μg P/1/y which was reported recently over a 17 year period from diffuse sources in the much larger (4400 km2) Northern Ireland catchment of Lough Neagh.  相似文献

Objective To estimate the prevalence of carriage of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among Australian veterinarians. Methods Individuals attending veterinary conferences in Australia in 2009 were recruited to provide nasal swabs and complete a questionnaire about their professional activities. Swabs were processed by standard methods for detecting MRSA and questionnaire responses were used to group veterinarians according to their areas of major work emphasis (species and practice type). Prevalence was estimated for each of these grouping and contingency tables and regression tree analysis used to explain the variation in MRSA carriage. Results Among the 771 respondents ‘industry and government veterinarians’ (controls) had the lowest prevalence of MRSA carriage at 0.9%. Veterinarians with horses as a major area of work emphasis had a prevalence of 11.8% (13‐fold that of controls) and those whose only major emphasis was horses had a prevalence of 21.4% (23‐fold that of controls). Veterinarians with dogs and cats as a major activity had a 4.9% prevalence (5‐fold that of controls). Prevalence rates for other major activities (pigs, dairy and beef cattle, avian and wildlife) were also increased, but were estimated from smaller numbers of respondents. Regression tree analysis clearly isolated equine veterinarians and dog and cat practitioners as groups at increased risk of carriage of MRSA. Conclusion Carriage of MRSA is a notable occupational health issue for veterinarians in clinical practice in Australia, particularly those who work with horses.  相似文献

Early age competition control has been reported to significantly improve the growth and yield of plantation grown loblolly pine. The objective of this paper is to understand the changes in wood properties: basal area weighted whole disk SG, earlywood SG (EWSG), latewood SG (LWSG) and latewood percent (LWP) of 14 year-old trees which received early age herbaceous and hardwood competition control, using data collected from 13-sites across 4-physiographic regions in the southeastern USA. The study was laid out in a randomized complete block design and had four levels of weed control (no weed control; woody vegetation control; herbaceous vegetation control; and woody and herbaceous vegetation control), with four blocks at each site. Increment cores 12 mm in diameter were collected at breast height (1.37 m) from 9-trees in each plot and ring-by-ring SG, EWSG, LWSG and LWP measured using a X-ray densitometer. Whole disk basal area weighted SG and LWP were determined for each tree and used for analysis. A reduction in whole disk SG of 0.039 and 0.0014 and LWP of 7.38% and 3.62% was observed for trees which received total weed control compared to no weed control, for lower and upper Coastal Plain sites, respectively. For trees receiving total weed control compared to no weed control, it was observed that the diameter of the juvenile core increased by 20% on average across all physiographic regions. However, no change in the length of the juvenile period was observed among treatments other than the regional differences.  相似文献

Debate about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals and the impact on humans is often inappropriately focussed on the crude amount of antimicrobials used in animals without deference to issues of ‘intensity of use’, ‘quality of use’ and especially the class of agents being administered. In the latter case, tools for helping to manage how the use of specific antimicrobial agents impact on the risk and consequences of antimicrobial resistance in humans have been available for almost two decades. These consist of antimicrobial ratings systems, which formally define the importance of each individual agent in human health by assigning them to a position on a graduated scale of ‘importance’ comprising up to four categories of risk. Until recently, these published ratings have only had a modest impact on antimicrobial stewardship at the frontline of medical and veterinary practice, although they will undoubtedly have a substantial influence into the future. This article considers the evolution of the available ‘antimicrobial ratings systems’ applicable to Australian and international settings and their pivotal future‐role in the educating of animal managers, policy makers and prescribers. Faithful application of these rating systems at all levels of decision making to do with antimicrobial use is now seen as central to the protection of animals, humans and economies from the scourge of AMR.  相似文献
