We studied the long-term effects of disturbance within the Northwest Wisconsin (USA) Sand Plain (NWSP), an ecoregion that is characterized by very sandy soil and an active disturbance history that includes fire, agriculture and industrial forestry, largely clearcut logging of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) and aspen (Populus spp.). Open “barrens” communities on this landscape were formerly maintained by fire, and are a high conservation priority. Hill's Oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis) can also dominate forest canopies, while blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), and sweetfern (Comptonia peregrina) are common shrub species. We structured a field sampling design with a spatial-temporal database built from historic airphotos (1938 and 1997) and fire records to examine whether soil organic matter and nutrients vary with disturbance history in the nonforest habitats of the sand plain. We sampled soils along 83 transects, randomly stratified among five sampled classes: (1) nonforest-farming history; (2) nonforest-fire history; (3) nonforest-clearcut only history; (4) evergreen forest of jack pine and red pine (P. resinosa); and (5) deciduous forest of Hill's oak and aspen. Logging of the original forest took place in the late 1800s–early 1900s. The farms were abandoned between 1938 and 1960, and the most recent fire occurred in 1977. Thus, the duration of the agricultural legacy is approximately 45–65 years while observed fire effects have lasted for 26 years.We observed strong agricultural legacies, including high P and low OM, N and Ca. One possible explanation for the N legacy is that it is tied to soil OM accretion which may be driven by plant growth. We detected no difference in mean values for any of the soil properties between soils from nonforested areas within the Five-Mile fire and soils from nonforested areas with a clearcut-only history. We did observe a fire effect in high variance for soil P. This could have resulted from variations in fire severity and ash convection and deposition.Forest soils generally had lower pH than the nonforest soils, and the deciduous forest soils had the lowest pH and also very low Ca. We also observed high within-transect coefficient of variation for Ca in the forest soils.We conclude that agriculture is a qualitatively different disturbance-type than fire or clearcutting, that disturbance legacies tend to be most persistent with geologically stable elements, such as P, and that management and conservation planning within the NWSP would benefit from site-specific agricultural history, as well as attention to Ca.  相似文献

Awara (Astrocaryum vulgare M.) pulp oil has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties in vivo, and contains an unsaponifiable matter rich in bioactive compounds. This study focused on the ethanolic unsaponifiable fraction (EUF) of awara pulp oil. Its chemical composition has been characterized: carotenoid, phytosterol, and tocopherol contents represent 125.7, 152.6, and 6.8?μg/mg of EUF, respectively. We further evaluated this fraction for anti-inflammatory properties in J774 macrophages activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plus interferon (IFN) γ to understand the biological effects of awara pulp oil. EUF strongly decreased nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2, tumour necrosis factor (TNF) α, and interleukin (IL) -6 and -10 production in activated J774 cells. Moreover, it inhibited expression of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenases-2 in vitro. The anti-inflammatory properties of EUF were also confirmed in vivo by modulation of TNFα, IL-6 and IL-10 serum concentration in an endotoxic shock model. Pre-treatment with awara oil fraction offers promise as a protective means to lower the production of excessive amounts of pro-inflammatory molecules.  相似文献

Prions are infectious pathogens essentially composed of PrP(Sc), an abnormally folded form of the host-encoded prion protein PrP(C). Constrained steric interactions between PrP(Sc) and PrP(C) are thought to provide prions with species specificity and to control cross-species transmission into other host populations, including humans. We compared the ability of brain and lymphoid tissues from ovine and human PrP transgenic mice to replicate foreign, inefficiently transmitted prions. Lymphoid tissue was consistently more permissive than the brain to prions such as those causing chronic wasting disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Furthermore, when the transmission barrier was overcome through strain shifting in the brain, a distinct agent propagated in the spleen, which retained the ability to infect the original host. Thus, prion cross-species transmission efficacy can exhibit a marked tissue dependence.  相似文献

An 8‐year‐old Labrador Retriever was presented for inspiratory efforts with stertor. A rhinoscopy and a magnetic resonance imaging scan were performed and revealed a naso‐pharyngeal mass. The mass was identified in the nasopharynx without meningeal extension. This mass was both T1‐ and T2‐hyperintense, compared to normal brain parenchyma without significant postcontrast enhancement. The mass was surgically removed and the histologic diagnosis was a mesenchymal tumor. Immunohistochemistry with antibodies was conducted and consistent with an extracranial meningioma. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report documenting a primary extracranial nasopharyngeal meningioma in a dog.  相似文献

While needles represent a proportionally large fraction of whole-plant hydraulic resistance, no studies to date have investigated how source–sink disturbances affect needle xylem structure. In this study, we evaluated structural changes in xylem in current-year needles of Scots pine 227 and 411 days after stem girdling (hereafter referred to as DAG). Maximum and minimum tracheid lumen diameters and therefore also the size of tracheid lumen areas increased in needles 227 DAG compared to control needles. In contrast, tracheid dimensions were similar in needles 411 DAG as in the control needles, but smaller xylem area and lower number of tracheids resulted in the lower theoretical needle hydraulic conductivity of those needles. Several needle xylem parameters were intercorrelated in both control and girdled trees. These observed changes provide a new understanding of the processes that occur following a source–sink disturbance. Considering anatomical parameters such as the number of tracheids, tracheid dimension, or needle xylem area, which are rarely described in physiological studies, could be helpful, for example, in understanding to tree hydraulic systems or for modeling gas exchange. Finally, empirical equations were developed to calculate needle theoretical hydraulic conductivity and the number of tracheids in needles using an easily measurable parameter of needle xylem area.  相似文献

Eleven samples of grapes and musts used in red table wines were investigated for the occurrence of potential ochratoxin A (OTA)-producing molds. From these samples, 59 filamentous fungi and 2 yeasts were isolated. Among the 30 genera isolated, Deuteromycetes were the most frequent (70%) followed by Ascomycetes (10%). Six of the eleven grapes samples were contaminated by potentially ochratoxinogenic strains (Penicillium chrysogenum and Aspergillus carbonarius). When cultivated in vitro on solid complex media, the 14 strains of A. carbonarius produced OTA. No other species produced OTA under the same conditions. Among must samples, eight of eleven were found to be contaminated by OTA (concentrations from <10 to 461 ng/L). There is a strong correlation between the presence of ochratoxin-producing strains on grapes and OTA in musts. These findings should be connected with the OTA contamination of human blood in these areas and in France.  相似文献
