Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic determination of disulfiram: collaborative study

A proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic method for determining disulfiram in the bulk drug product and in the formulated material was collaboratively studied. The method depends on the use of chloroform-d as a solvent and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane as the internal standard. No interference from tablet excipients was observed. The method is rapid and specific. Eighteen laboratories analyzed duplicate samples of a bulk drug product, a 250 mg tablet composite, and a 500 mg tablet composite. The average per cent results and standard deviations were 99.7 +/- 1.4, 100.9 +/- 2.0, and 99.9 +/- 2.2, respectively.     

Fusarium species in soil,thatch and crowns of Poa pratensis turfgrass treated with fungicides

Little information exists concerning the effects of long-term fungicide programs on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of fusaria in turfgrasses and in turfgrass soils. These effects were studied on Poa pratensis L, turfgrasses at three locations, using 14 fungicides, one nematicide, and five mixed fungicide programs. Some fungicides increased the numbers of fusaria in soil and thatch, some had no effect, and others greatly reduced the numbers. Changes in Fusarium species' compositions occurred independently from the changes in propagule numbers. The proportion of Fusarium-colonized turfgrass crowns was generally higher in fungicide-treated than in nontreated turfgrasses.     

An Experiment to Control Fomes annosus in Second Rotation Pine Crops

Stump removal was found to singnificantly reduce killing byFomes annosus in second rotation crops of pine. Poisoning andgirdling of trees prior to felling and also stump poisoningfailed to control the disease. In this experiment no significantdifferences were detected in the susceptibility of Scots andCorsican pine to attack. Increasing periods of delay beforereplanting resulted in less mortality. An equation is presented,based on factors of the first rotation crop which may be usedto predict losses likely to occur when a site is replanted.Root attack by F. annosus results in reduced growth and yieldas well as mortality. The results from the experiment are discussed in trems of themangement of pine crops attacted by F. annosus in Theford Chase.     

Some observations on plant lectins and Rhizobium specificity

The ability of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labelled lectins extracted from the legumes Aspalathus linearis, Glycine max, Lotononis bainesii, Phaseolus vulgaris and Pisum sativum, respectively, to react with strains of various Rhizobium spp. was studied. With the exception of six out of ten strains of R. phaseoli and two out of ten strains of R. japonicum, none of the Rhizobium strains tested were able to bind lectin from their normal host plants. Many strains of R. leguminosarum, R. trifolii and R. phaseoli bound each of the plant lectins studied with the exception of the P. sativum lectin. This lectin was only bound by two strains of R. meliloti and a slow-growing strain isolated from Macroptilium atropurpureum. These results do not support suggestions by other workers that plant lectins play an important role in Rhizobium specificity.
