High herbicide levels can be localized on or near seed of acetolactate synthase (ALS) resistant maize (Zea mays). The magnesium salt of imazapyr was optimal for seed dressings (drenching, priming, and coating), for preventing field damage from parasitic Striga hermonthica (witchweed) in three seasons. Striga emerged on untreated maize from 6 to 12 weeks after planting. There was almost no Striga emergence for 3 months on imazapyr-dressed homozygous ALS-R 3245IR maize seeds. Occasional Striga that emerged and flowered formed no seed by harvest. Dust or polyvinylpyrrolidone adhesive coatings were safer in maize and as effective in Striga control as priming. Seed dressing coupled with pulling Striga escapes reduces infestation and can be used to deplete the Striga seed bank until genetic crop resistance becomes available.  相似文献

While electrospun chitosan membranes modified to retain nanofibrous morphology have shown promise for use in guided bone regeneration applications in in vitro and in vivo studies, their mechanical tear strengths are lower than commercial collagen membranes. Elastin, a natural component of the extracellular matrix, is a protein with extensive elastic property. This work examined the incorporation of elastin into electrospun chitosan membranes to improve their mechanical tear strengths and to further mimic the native extracellular composition for guided bone regeneration (GBR) applications. In this work, hydrolyzed elastin (ES12, Elastin Products Company, USA) was added to a chitosan spinning solution from 0 to 4 wt% of chitosan. The chitosan–elastin (CE) membranes were examined for fiber morphology using SEM, hydrophobicity using water contact angle measurements, the mechanical tear strength under simulated surgical tacking, and compositions using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and post-spinning protein extraction. In vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate the degradation in a lysozyme solution based on the mass loss and growth of fibroblastic cells. Chitosan membranes with elastin showed significantly thicker fiber diameters, lower water contact angles, up to 33% faster degradation rates, and up to seven times higher mechanical strengths than the chitosan membrane. The FTIR spectra showed stronger amide peaks at 1535 cm−1 and 1655 cm−1 in membranes with higher concentrated elastin, indicating the incorporation of elastin into electrospun fibers. The bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay demonstrated an increase in protein concentration in proportion to the amount of elastin added to the CE membranes. In addition, all the CE membranes showed in vitro biocompatibility with the fibroblasts.  相似文献

A host resistance factor was integrated into the FAST (Forecaster ofAlternariasolani onTomatoes) system to initiate and to schedule fungicide applications for three levels of potato cultivar susceptibility while maintaining disease control and yield. Four cultivars ranging from susceptible to moderately resistant were each treated with the fungicide chlorothalonil during two field seasons. The five fungicide treatments were a 7-day schedule initiated after 50% flowering; a non-sprayed control; and three FAST application schedules based on combinations of critical levels of cumulative severity (CS, the disease severity values as a function of leaf wetness and temperature) and cumulative rating (CR, the disease rating values as a function of average temperature and hours of relative humidity greater than 90%) values. The FAST system predicted the onset of early blight and subsequent periods conducive for disease development in 1993 and 1994. There were cultivar-by-spray-schedule interactions for both disease severity and yield, suggesting that differences in early blight sus-ceptibility exist between cultivars. Use of the recommended schedules for the cultivar’s targeted level of susceptibility reduced early blight severity and minimized fungicide use while maintaining yield. These results indicate that a host-resistance factor can be incorporated into the FAST system.  相似文献

Precision agriculture (PA) has a huge potential for growth in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), but it faces a number of social-economic and technological challenges. This study sought to map existing PA research and application in SSA countries following the methodology for systematic mapping in environmental sciences. After screening for relevance, the initial about 7715 articles was reduced to 128. Results show that most of the studies were conducted in countries with socio-economic and technological advancement, mainly South Africa followed by Nigeria and Kenya. The studies were conducted at various scales ranging from field to country level with field scale studies being the most common. Most studies were conducted in relatively small farms typical of most farmlands in SSA. Studies done in relatively large farms are fewer, and such farms would likely belong to a few organisations and individuals with high economic capacity. Many of these studies have been conducted by researchers from outside SSA and a combination of researchers from within and outside SSA. However, based on authorship of the articles, it appears that most of the studies conducted in SSA on precision agriculture have either involved or depended on non-African researchers. It is concluded that there have been significant strides towards use of precision agriculture in SSA. However, with about 21 countries having no research done, there exists greater potential for precision agriculture in the region. Besides, there is need for more research to investigate the low usage of precision agriculture for livestock management.

This paper describes a conceptual framework that was developed to integrate livestock, human, cultivation and forest constraints to model community fuelwood consumption over a 25-year planning horizon. This framework was constructed as an energy balance based on human caloric requirements in order to examine the effects of household-level decisions for nutrition, fuelwood and land use. A scenario from a virtual community in Uganda is presented to illustrate the utility of this model to allow rapid policy and scenario evaluation. User-defined inputs combined with published research data are used in simulating resource responses and energy consumption rates. This model is a potential tool to monitor fuelwood consumption and to understand the implications of various land-use practices.

The ethanol and methanol extracts of Cassia auriculata flowers were screened for antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was determined by an improved assay based on the decolorization of the radical monocation of 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. The ethanol and methanol extracts of C. auriculata flowers showed antioxidant activity in both assays.  相似文献

Since its detection in the Mediterranean basin at the end of 2006 and later in other European countries, the South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), has become a serious threat to tomato crops. In newly infested areas, it is especially problematic during the first years of its presence. Nevertheless, after 2–3 years, the incidence of T. absoluta has become less severe in certain areas. There are several factors contributing to this decline, such as the increase in growers' knowledge of pest behaviour and biology and the correct application of integrated pest control strategies. The impact of opportunistic native natural enemies (fortuitous biological control) should be considered as one of the key factors in this decline. In this review, available information on indigenous natural enemies is updated, and the current pest management approaches used against T. absoluta are addressed. The aim of this study was to evaluate two new types of experimental weaning microdiets for fish larvae, using the same formulation, but with different manufacturing processes, microextrusion marumerization (MEM) and particle‐assisted rotational agglomeration (PARA). Both microdiets were compared to a commercial microdiet, Otohime? (OTO), during the weaning of the fine flounder, Paralichthys adspersus . Weaning was achieved by cofeeding with live food from 40 to 50 d after hatch (d.a.h.). Thereafter, only the microdiets were fed to the end of the study (60 d.a.h.), where the total length, dry weight, and survival rates were 15.9 ± 3.20, 14.3 ± 1.72, and 14.4 ± 2.28 mm; 8.83 ± 3.40, 5.53 ± 2.85, and 7.10 ± 3.56 mg; 18.1, 16.3, and 15.2%, for OTO, MEM, and PARA, respectively. The dry weight and total length were significantly higher (P < 0.05) for larvae fed OTO compared with those fed MEM. There were no differences between the other comparisons. Based on these results, any of the two experimental microdiets can be used for future investigations. However, we recommend the PARA microdiets because the manufacturing process produces less‐dense and smaller particle size diets, reducing sinking rates and increasing the probability of the larvae in detecting and ingesting the diet.  相似文献
