Progression of aortic stenosis in the boxer

Thirty-five boxers that had been referred to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies between 1989 and 1994 with left heart base murmurs and aortic velocities greater than 1.5 m/second on Doppler echocardiography were recalled for clinical examination and Doppler echocardiography between 1995 and 1996. Five dogs (14 per cent) showed an increase in murmur grade on repeat visit. Six dogs (17 per cent) showed an increase in aortic velocity of greater than 20 per cent. Eight dogs (23 per cent) had developed aortic valvular or subvalvular two-dimensional echocardiographic changes that had not been present at the initial visit. Seven dogs (20 per cent) had developed aortic regurgitation, and three dogs (8 per cent) mitral regurgitation.     

The diagnostic accuracy of different natriuretic peptides in the investigation of canine cardiac disease

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to validate and determine the accuracy of a new sandwich ELISA for canine N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in the discrimination of canine patients with cardiac disease from those with respiratory disease and to determine the effect of confounding variables on NT-proBNP concentrations. METHODS: Validation studies for the new assay were undertaken. Concentrations of N-terminal atrial natriuretic peptide (NT-proANP) and NT-proBNP in both ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) plasma and serum were estimated in samples from 77 dogs at a laboratory blinded to the clinical status of the patient. The diagnostic accuracy of the each sample type and test was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curves. The effect of age, gender and indicators of renal function was evaluated using a multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: Concentrations of NT-proBNP in both serum and plasma accurately discriminated dogs with respiratory disease from those with cardiac disease, with an optimum cut-off concentration of 210 pmol/l. NT-proBNP concentrations were unaffected by sample type. Increasing creatinine concentration is associated with increasing concentration of NT-proBNP. Age and gender were not found to have significant effects on natriuretic peptide concentrations in this population. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Canine NT-proBNP appears to be a useful marker of the presence of cardiac disease, although concentrations must be interpreted in the light of the patient's renal function.     

The effect of transport on the quality of rabbit meat

The analyzed material included 40 hybrid rabbits slaughtered at the age of 90 days. The control group was transported directly after weaning, while the transport group was transported directly prior to slaughter. The experiment was designed to assess the transport stress, carcass and meat quality implications, taking into account the muscle type and sex. The transported animals were characterized by a higher level of blood cortisol, glucose and triglycerides (P < 0.0001), and a lower level of insulin (P < 0.0001) compared to the control group. In the presented study the time post‐mortem affected the pH decline in both rabbit groups (P < 0.0001). The lightness, redness and yellowness of rabbit meat were affected by the transport (P < 0.0001, P = 0.001 and P < 0.0001). The percentage of free water and its share in the total water was higher for the non‐transported rabbits compared to the transported ones (P < 0.0001). Moreover, the meat from the control group was characterized by greater plasticity compared to the transport group (P = 0.003). The chemical composition of rabbit meat was not changed by the effect of transport (P = 0.643–0.979). To conclude, the quality traits of meat from the transported hybrid rabbits clearly indicated the development of dark firm and dry‐like lower quality of meat.     

Single-stage Bilateral Tibial Tuberosity Advancement With Cranial Fixation in an English Bulldog – A Case Report

This article presents a report of single-stage bilateral tibial tuberosity advancement for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in an English bulldog. The reconstruction was performed by a new surgical technique involving tibial tuberosity advancement and fixation with two cranially placed lag screws. The patient was able to ambulate normally at a walk without lameness four days postoperatively. Except for bruising of the surgical site, no complications were observed during a six-month follow-up period.
