IgA deficiency in shar-pei dogs

Two shar-pei puppies examined because of signs of sinopulmonary disease, one of which also had skin disease, had deficient IgA concentrations. Deficient serum IgA concentrations also were confirmed in 30 of 39 (76.9%) clinically normal adult dogs in two colonies of shar-peis. Both courses of disease--sinopulmonary signs and chronic skin disease and a benign clinical course--have been reported in human patients with IgA deficiency. Thus, the shar-pei might be an appropriate model for studying the immunopathology of IgA deficiency in man.     

Origin of antibody in porcine bile after intraperitoneal immunisation

Pigs were immunised intraperitoneally with ovalbumin (OVA) in Freund's complete adjuvant and killed between 52 and 71 days later. Sera, bile and spleen and liver tissue were collected at slaughter. IgG and IgA OVA antibody in bile and serum were detected by ELISA, and IgG and IgA anti-OVA containing cells (AOCC) in tissue were observed using double fluorochrome labelling techniques. The results indicated few IgA AOCC in spleen or liver, but an elevated IgA OVA response in bile compared to serum relative to IgG. The results indicate selective transport of IgA OVA antibody from serum to bile relative to IgG.

The topical administration of 1.5% griseofulvin in dimethylsulfoxide for five to seven days was a satisfactory treatment regime for experimental ringworm in the guinea pig.

Females of the parasitic wasp Nasonia vitripennis raised from the egg stage in the total absence of light but subjected to daily temperature cycles (13 degrees to 23 degrees C), are able to distinguish a "short-day" thermoperiod ( 13 hours at 23 degrees C per day) from a "long-day" thermoperiod ( 13 hours at 23 degrees C per day) and produce diapausing or developing progeny accordingly.     

Preparation of submicroscopic spider threads for particle studies

Many small spiders produce threads of different diameters, some of which are submicroscopic. When the threads are subjected to an environment of tobacco smoke and then examined microscopically, the invisible threads are manifested as particles in a line with no visible connection. These threads are used to support microscopic water droplets in single-particle scattering experiments.     

Effects of atmospheric pollution on leaf surface microflora

This review of the effects of atmospheric pollution on leaf surface microflora commences with a brief look at the various pollutants and their dynamics, deposition and behaviour on the leaf surface. The indirect and direct effects of pollution on the microflora are then discussed. Considerable attention is paid to sulphur dioxide, especially to its effects as a gaseous pollutant and in solution on the leaf surface where it exhibits selective toxicity to individual members of the microflora.
