Concurrent in vivo and in vitro studies were conducted to evaluate urea (U), soybean meal (SBM), ground soybeans (RAW), extruded soybeans (ES) or extruded soybeans plus urea (ES + U) as primary supplemental N sources in starter diets for Holstein steers. Three groups of 48 Holstein steers each were fed five different starter diets to 181 kg BW in three experimental periods over 2 yr. Average daily gains were similar (P greater than .05) for steers fed ES + U (1.12 kg), ES (1.08 kg) and SBM (1.09 kg) but lower (P less than .05) for those fed U (1.00 kg) or RAW (.97 kg) diets. Feed/gain was similar (P greater than .05) for ES-fed steers vs those fed other diets except U. From 181 to 477 kg, all steers were fed the same diet. Steers fed the RAW starter diet had the lowest (P less than .05) ADG for the entire period. The starter diets were used as substrates for ruminal microbial metabolism in eight dual-flow continuous culture fermenters. True OM digestion was higher and NDF and ADF digestion was lower (P less than .05) for the ES + U diet than for the ES diet. Dietary protein degradation was lowest (P less than .05) for the ES diet (64.4%). Total bacterial N flow was higher (P less than .05) with the ES + U, SBM and U diets than with the ES diet. Lysine flow was higher (P less than .05) for the ES + U diet than for all other diets except ES. Results of these experiments indicate that ES as a protected ruminal escape N source with or without added urea did not improve steer performance above that obtained from SBM in starter diets. 相似文献

We constructed an 800,000-year synthetic record of Greenland climate variability based on the thermal bipolar seesaw model. Our Greenland analog reproduces much of the variability seen in the Greenland ice cores over the past 100,000 years. The synthetic record shows strong similarity with the absolutely dated speleothem record from China, allowing us to place ice core records within an absolute timeframe for the past 400,000 years. Hence, it provides both a stratigraphic reference and a conceptual basis for assessing the long-term evolution of millennial-scale variability and its potential role in climate change at longer time scales. Indeed, we provide evidence for a ubiquitous association between bipolar seesaw oscillations and glacial terminations throughout the Middle to Late Pleistocene. 相似文献

Large-scale genome-mining analyses have identified an enormous number of cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) as a great source of novel bioactive natural products. Given the sheer number of natural product (NP) candidates, effective strategies and computational methods are keys to choosing appropriate BGCs for further NP characterization and production. This review discusses genomics-based approaches for prioritizing candidate BGCs extracted from large-scale genomic data, by highlighting studies that have successfully produced compounds with high chemical novelty, novel biosynthesis pathway, and potent bioactivities. We group these studies based on their BGC-prioritization logics: detecting presence of resistance genes, use of phylogenomics analysis as a guide, and targeting for specific chemical structures. We also briefly comment on the different bioinformatics tools used in the field and examine practical considerations when employing a large-scale genome mining study. 相似文献

Recreational activities can have significant impacts on geomorphic and hydrologic processes in drainage basins, often out of proportion to their areal extent. With increased stress on hiking trails nationwide, there is a need to characterize the impacts of human trampling on soil properties. We examine an 810 m segment of Hawai'iloa Ridge Trail (O'ahu, Hawai'i, USA). Soil compaction and surface erosion on moderate to steeply sloping sites have degraded the trail environment. Bulk density, penetration resistance, and vane shear strength were significantly higher on the trail than in adjacent undisturbed areas, with median differences ranging from 29 to 120 per cent. With compaction and exposure of subsoil on the trail, void ratio, air‐filled porosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, effective and preferential porosity were significantly lower, with relative change values ranging from 23–93 per cent. No significant changes were noted in meso‐ or micro‐porosity, but macropores with a radius of >110 μm decreased significantly by 58 per cent for on‐trail locations. This comprehensive dataset indicates that hiking stress is deleterious to the soil–hydrologic system. Data point to a trail system that would be dominated by Hortonian overland flow and this was supported by field evidence during a storm event. Increased runoff has incised rills on some trail segments and there is evidence that run‐on to adjacent side slopes has lead to accelerated erosion. Management on most trails in Hawai'i, including the one studied, is limited, but from our data it is apparent that on‐trail sites directly influenced by an overhanging canopy of rapidly growing (aggressive) exotics were least impacted due to increased organic contributions to the surface and root network development.
