1. Fifty‐five antimicrobial substances were tested for their ability to promote growth when added to the diet of chicks.
2. Both cephalosporins and all the nine penicillins tested were active.
3. Of six aminoglycosides, streptomycin and gentamicin had the greatest activity and neomycin had none.
4. Growth rate was significantly improved by clindamycin, lincomycin, vancomycin, spectinomycin, rifampicin, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, erythromycin, tylosin, flavomycin, virginiamycin and zinc bacitracin. Chloramphenicol and nalidixic acid were inactive. Polymixin B, novo‐biocin, cycloserine, phosphonomycin, and sodium fusidate had little activity. Fusidic acid promoted growth at 250 mg/kg diet.
5. Trimethoprim was inactive alone and in combination with sulpha‐diazine. Of seven 5‐nitroimidazoles, only dimetridazole and metronidazole showed slight activity. Of the six 5‐nitrofurans, only nitrovin, the standard reference substance used, promoted growth.
6. Caprylohydroxamic acid, a urease inhibitor, had no beneficial effect on growth rate or on the efficiency of food conversion.
7. The growth‐promoting properties of the various substances could not be related with their known antimicrobial and absorption characteristics in mammals. 相似文献
This brief review focuses on health and biological function as cornerstones of fish welfare. From the function-based point
of view, good welfare is reflected in the ability of the animal to cope with infectious and non-infectious stressors, thereby
maintaining homeostasis and good health, whereas stressful husbandry conditions and protracted suffering will lead to the
loss of the coping ability and, thus, to impaired health. In the first part of the review, the physiological processes through
which stressful husbandry conditions modulate health of farmed fish are examined. If fish are subjected to unfavourable husbandry
conditions, the resulting disruption of internal homeostasis necessitates energy-demanding physiological adjustments (allostasis/acclimation).
The ensuing energy drain leads to trade-offs with other energy-demanding processes such as the functioning of the primary
epithelial barriers (gut, skin, gills) and the immune system. Understanding of the relation between husbandry conditions,
allostatic responses and fish health provides the basis for the second theme developed in this review, the potential use of
biological function and health parameters as operational welfare indicators (OWIs). Advantages of function- and health-related
parameters are that they are relatively straightforward to recognize and to measure and are routinely monitored in most aquaculture
units, thereby providing feasible tools to assess fish welfare under practical farming conditions. As the efforts to improve
fish welfare and environmental sustainability lead to increasingly diverse solutions, in particular integrated production,
it is imperative that we have objective OWIs to compare with other production forms, such as high-density aquaculture. However,
to receive the necessary acceptance for legislation, more robust scientific backing of the health- and function-related OWIs

The orb web is a spectacular evolutionary innovation that enables spiders to catch flying prey. This elegant, geometric structure is woven with silk fibers that are renowned for their superior mechanical properties. We used silk gland expression libraries to address a long-standing controversy concerning the evolution of the orb-web architecture. Contrary to the view that the orb-web design evolved multiple times, we found that the distribution and phylogeny of silk proteins support a single, ancient origin of the orb web at least 136 million years ago. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether total serum calcium (tCa) or adjusted tCa concentrations accurately predict ionized calcium (iCa) status in dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION: 1,633 canine serum samples. PROCEDURE: The tCa concentration was adjusted for total protein (TP) or albumin concentration by use of published equations. Correlations between iCa and tCa or adjusted tCa, tCa and TP, and tCa and albumin were calculated. Diagnostic discordance between tCa or adjusted tCa and iCa was determined. Diagnostic discordance in predicting iCa was also determined for 490 dogs with chronic renal failure (CRF). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and positive and negative diagnostic likelihood ratios were calculated for tCa, tCa adjusted forTP, and tCa adjusted for albumin. RESULTS: Diagnostic discordance was 27% when tCa concentration was used to predict iCa status. Use of adjusted tCa increased diagnostic discordance to approximately 37% for all dogs and 55% for dogs with CRF. Positive predictive value and positive diagnostic likelihood ratios were poor when tCa concentration was used to predict iCa status. The tCa concentration overestimated normocalcemia and underestimated hypocalcemia. Adjusted tCa overestimated hypercalcemia and underestimated hypocalcemia. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Adjusted tCa or tCa concentrations are unacceptable for predicting iCa status in dogs. Use of adjustment equations is not recommended. Direct measurement of iCa concentration is necessary for accurate assessment of calcium status. Use of tCa or adjusted tCa concentrations to predict iCa status in dogs could cause serious mistakes in diagnosis and case management, especially in dogs with CRF. 相似文献
Five dogs from the northeastern United States were presented with clinical signs of neurological disease associated with Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) infection. Four of the five dogs had vestibular system dysfunction. Other neurological signs included paresis, tremors, and changes in mentation. All of the dogs had an elevated indirect fluorescent antibody titer or a positive semiquantitative enzyme screening immunoassay titer for Rickettsia rickettsii at the time of presentation. Although a higher mortality rate has been reported for dogs with neurological symptoms and RMSF infection, all of the dogs in this study improved with appropriate medical therapy and supportive care. 相似文献
Small berries such as black currant constitute one of the important sources of potential health-promoting phytochemicals because these fruits are rich sources of compounds with high antioxidant properties. In this work, antioxidant capacities of different parts (buds, leaves, fruits) of various black currant cultivars were compared throughout the growing season with the aim to prepare extracts with high antioxidant capacity. Buds (opened, at the end of March) and leaves (in June) had a higher content in phenolics and antioxidants than fully ripened berries (in July) and the best yield (per branch) was obtained with the leaves collected in June due to their higher biomass. The differences observed among the eight cultivars tested were small. Concerning flavonols, quercetin was dominant in all organs and cultivars, myricetin varied widely among the cultivars, and kampferol was very low. 相似文献
This study investigates the clinical and pathologic findings associated with 173 primary brain tumors in our hospital population of dogs that presented between the years 1986 and 2002. Of the 173 primary brain tumors, 78 (45%) were meningiomas, 29 (17%) were astrocytomas, 25 (14%) were oligodendrogliomas, 12 (7%) were choroid plexus tumors, and 7 (4%) were primary central nervous system lymphomas. Smaller numbers of glioblastomas (n = 5), primitive neuroectodermal tumors (n = 5), histiocytic sarcomas (n = 5), vascular hamartomas (n = 4), and unclassified gliomas (n = 3) were identified. One dog had both a meningioma and an astrocytoma. Most tumors were located within the telencephalon, and seizures were the most common clinical presenting complaint. Of 168 tumors for which a location in the brain was recorded at postmortem examination, 79 were found to involve more than 1 brain division. Other neoplasms unrelated to the primary brain tumor were identified on postmortem examination in 39 dogs (23%). Intrathoracic and intraabdominal neoplasms were present at necropsy in 13 and 24 cases, respectively. Based on the results of this study, thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasonography may be indicated to look for extracranial neoplasia prior to advanced imaging of the brain or intracranial surgery. 相似文献
An effective host immune response to mycobacterial infection must control pathogen dissemination without inducing immunopathology. Constitutive overexpression of mycobacterial heat shock protein (myHsp70) is associated with impaired bacterial persistence, but the immune-mediated mechanisms are unknown. We found that myHsp70, in addition to enhancing antigen delivery to human dendritic cells, signaled through the CCR5 chemokine receptor, promoting dendritic cell aggregation, immune synapse formation between dendritic cells and T cells, and the generation of effector immune responses. Thus, CCR5 acts as a pattern-recognition receptor for myHsp70, which may have implications for both the pathophysiology of tuberculosis and the use of myHsps in tumor-directed immunotherapy. 相似文献
