OBJECTIVE: To develop a quantitative method of interpreting tibial scintigrams of Thoroughbred racehorses with tibial stress fractures that may facilitate diagnosis of fractures and to provide prognostic information regarding future performance of affected horses. ANIMALS: 35 Thoroughbred racehorses. PROCEDURES: Static bone-phase scintigrams of tibial stress fractures were quantitatively analyzed by use of ratios of the mean radionuclide counts per pixel in a region of interest (ROI) drawn around the area of increased uptake of radiopharmaceutical to mean counts per pixel in a second ROI drawn around an apparently normal area of the tibial diaphysis. In horses with unilateral fractures, ratios for the contralateral tibia were determined by use of 2 ROIs drawn at the same positions as the ROIs in the fractured tibia. Ratios were compared between fractured versus apparently normal tibias, between horses that returned to racing versus those that did not, and among horses with various grades of lameness. The association between ratios for fractured tibias and intervals between diagnosis and return to racing was also assessed. RESULTS: Mean ratio of ROIs in apparently normal tibias was 1.35 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21 to 1.50); that in tibias with stress fractures was 3.55 (95% CI, 2.50 to 4.60). These ratios were significantly different. None of the associations between ratios for fractured tibias and grades of lameness or performance outcomes were significant. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Tibial stress fracture scintigrams can be quantitatively analyzed. A prospective study with a controlled rehabilitation period is necessary to evaluate the possible applications of this method.  相似文献

Objectives— To compare monotonic biomechanical properties and fatigue life of a 5.5 mm broad limited‐contact dynamic compression plate (5.5‐LC‐DCP) fixation with a 4.5 mm broad LC‐DCP (4.5‐LC‐DCP) fixation to repair osteotomized equine third metacarpal (MC3) bones. Study Design— In vitro biomechanical testing of paired cadaveric equine MC3 with a mid‐diaphyseal osteotomy, stabilized by 1 of 2 methods for fracture fixation. Sample Population— Adult equine cadaveric MC3 bones (n=18 pair). Methods— MC3 were divided into 3 test groups (6 pairs each) for: (1) 4‐point bending single cycle to failure testing; (2) 4‐point bending cyclic fatigue testing; and (3) torsional single cycle to failure testing. The 8‐hole, 5.5 mm broad LC‐DCP (5.5‐LC‐DCP) was applied to the dorsal surface of 1 randomly selected bone from each pair. One 8‐hole, 4.5 mm broad LC‐DCP (4.5‐LC‐DCP) was applied dorsally to the contralateral bone from each pair. Plates and screws were applied using standard ASIF techniques. All MC3 bones had mid‐diaphyseal osteotomies. Mean test variable values for each method were compared using a paired t–test within each group. Significance was set at P<.05. Results— Mean yield load, yield bending moment, composite rigidity, failure load and failure bending moment under 4‐point bending, single cycle to failure, of the 5.5‐LC‐DCP fixation were significantly greater (P<.024) than those of the 4.5‐LC‐DCP fixation. Mean cycles to failure for 4‐point bending was significantly (P<.05) greater for the 4.5‐LC‐DCP fixation compared with the 5.5‐LC‐DCP fixation. Mean yield load, mean composite rigidity, and mean failure load in torsion for the 5.5‐LC‐DCP fixation was not significantly different (P>.05) than those with the 4.5‐LC‐DCP fixation. Conclusion— 5.5‐LC‐DCP fixation was superior to 4.5‐LC‐DCP fixation in resisting the static overload forces under palmarodorsal 4‐point bending. There was no significant difference between 5.5‐LC‐DCP fixation and 4.5‐LC‐DCP fixation in resisting static overload forces under torsion; however, the 5.5‐LC‐DCP offers significantly less stability (80% of that of the 4.5‐LC‐DCP) in cyclic fatigue testing. Clinical Relevance— The results of this in vitro study may provide information to aid in the selection of a biological plate for long bone fracture repair in horses.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cervical vertebral compressive myelopathy (CVCM) is a common cause of myelopathy in horses aged 6 months to 4 years. Little information is available regarding the types of lesions, treatment, and outcomes in horses with CVCM that are > or =4 years old. ANIMALS: Twenty-two affected horses (10 with a confirmed diagnosis of CVCM and 12 presumptive cases) and 210 contemporaneous control horses. METHODS: Horses > or =4 years old that were diagnosed with CVCM between January 1992 and January 2004 were identified from medical records at Texas A&M University and the University of Florida. Data analyzed included history, signalment, neurologic examination findings, lesion location, treatment, and outcome. Signalment was also recorded in a population of contemporaneous controls. RESULTS: Horses identified had a median age of 8.4 years, and there was a greater percentage of male horses among the cases than among the controls. The most common breeds represented were warmblood (n=6) and quarter horse (n=5) types; warmbloods were significantly (P < .05) overrepresented relative to control horses. The caudal cervical vertebral column was the most common site of CVCM lesions, and the C5-C6 (4/9) and C6-C7 (3/9) articulations were most often identified as abnormal via myelography. The most common lesions seen with radiography and myelography were articular process osteophytes. Of the 22 affected horses, 8 were euthanized and a diagnosis of CVCM was confirmed by necropsy for all; 5 of 8 of these horses had spinal cord compression caused, entirely or in part, by articular process osteophytes. Medical management was the therapy chosen in all horses, and administration of corticosteroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs resulted in improvement in the greatest number of horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: CVCM should be a differential diagnosis in older horses with cervical myelopathy. Articular process osteophytes are the most frequently identified cause of spinal cord compression in this group. Male horses and horses of warmblood or Tennessee Walking Horse breeds may be predisposed to this condition.  相似文献

Objectives— To compare in vitro monotonic biomechanical properties of an equine spoon plate (ESP) with an axial 3‐hole, 4.5 mm narrow dynamic compression plate (DCP) using 5.5 mm cortical screws in conjunction with 2 abaxial transarticular 5.5 mm cortical screws (DCP‐TLS) inserted in lag fashion for equine proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint arthrodesis. Study Design— Paired in vitro biomechanical testing of 2 methods of stabilizing cadaveric adult equine forelimb PIP joints. Animal Population— Cadaveric adult equine forelimbs (n=18 pairs). Methods— For each forelimb pair, 1 PIP joint was stabilized with an ESP (8 hole, 4.5 mm) and 1 with an axial 3‐hole narrow DCP (4.5 mm) using 5.5 mm cortical screws in conjunction with 2 abaxial transarticular 5.5 mm cortical screws inserted in lag fashion. Six matching pairs of constructs were tested in single cycle to failure under axial compression with load applied under displacement control at a constant rate of 5 cm/s. Six construct pairs were tested for cyclic fatigue under axial compression with cyclic load (0–7.5 kN) applied at 6 Hz; cycles to failure were recorded. Six construct pairs were tested in single cycle to failure under torsional loading applied at a constant displacement rate (0.17 radians/s) until rotation of 0.87 radians occurred. Mean values for each fixation method were compared using a paired t‐test within each group with statistical significance set at P<.05. Results— Mean yield load, yield stiffness, and failure load for ESP fixation were significantly greater (for axial compression and torsion) than for DCP‐TLS fixation. Mean (± SD) values for the ESP and DCP‐TLS fixation techniques, respectively, in single cycle to failure under axial compression were: yield load 123.9 ± 8.96 and 28.5 ± 3.32 kN; stiffness, 13.11 ± 0.242 and 2.60 ± 0.17 kN/cm; and failure load, 144.4 ± 13.6 and 31.4 ± 3.8 kN. In single cycle to failure under torsion, mean (± SD) values for ESP and DCP‐TLS, respectively, were: stiffness 2,022 ± 26.2 and 107.9 ± 11.1 N m/rad; and failure load: 256.4 ± 39.2 and 87.1 ± 11.5 N m. Mean cycles to failure in axial compression of ESP fixation (622,529 ± 65,468) was significantly greater than DCP‐TLS (95,418 ± 11,037). Conclusion— ESP was superior to an axial 3‐hole narrow DCP with 2 abaxial transarticular screws inserted in lag fashion in resisting static overload forces and cyclic fatigue. Clinical Relevance— In vitro results support further evaluation of ESP for PIP joint arthrodesis in horses. Its specific design may provide increased stability without need for external coaptation support.  相似文献

Although common among bacteria, lateral gene transfer-the movement of genes between distantly related organisms-is thought to occur only rarely between bacteria and multicellular eukaryotes. However, the presence of endosymbionts, such as Wolbachia pipientis, within some eukaryotic germlines may facilitate bacterial gene transfers to eukaryotic host genomes. We therefore examined host genomes for evidence of gene transfer events from Wolbachia bacteria to their hosts. We found and confirmed transfers into the genomes of four insect and four nematode species that range from nearly the entire Wolbachia genome (>1 megabase) to short (<500 base pairs) insertions. Potential Wolbachia-to-host transfers were also detected computationally in three additional sequenced insect genomes. We also show that some of these inserted Wolbachia genes are transcribed within eukaryotic cells lacking endosymbionts. Therefore, heritable lateral gene transfer occurs into eukaryotic hosts from their prokaryote symbionts, potentially providing a mechanism for acquisition of new genes and functions.  相似文献

Precision measurements are important across all fields of science. In particular, optical phase measurements can be used to measure distance, position, displacement, acceleration, and optical path length. Quantum entanglement enables higher precision than would otherwise be possible. We demonstrated an optical phase measurement with an entangled four-photon interference visibility greater than the threshold to beat the standard quantum limit-the limit attainable without entanglement. These results open the way for new high-precision measurement applications.  相似文献

A dairy cattle simulation model for pastoral systems that considers how dairy cow genotypes respond to different environments is described. The dairy cow is represented by five modules for maintenance, pregnancy, growth, body energy reserves and lactation with the influence of environmental factors on processes included within each module. Feed intake is predicted based on the requirements for maintenance, growth and pregnancy, and the dairy cow’s potential for yields of milk, fat and protein and body fat change in a given environment. The effects of various temporary environmental factors such as cow body condition score, climate, feed quality and the stage of pregnancy are all considered when predicting yields of milk, fat and protein, energy and dry matter intake. The model was evaluated using information from a prior experimental study with 1990s Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle of North American/European or New Zealand origin managed in a pasture-based system in early to peak lactation. The model was able to predict, to a high degree of accuracy, mean values for yields of milk, fat and protein, and concentrations of fat and protein. However for individual cows, feed intake and live weight change were less reliably predicted. The major source of error was a lack of simulated variation, rather than any systematic bias. The major advance of the model is its ability to predict performance from genetic and environmental sensitivity information for particular breeds, and its ability to predict feed intake and yields of milk, fat and protein concurrently.  相似文献
