A study was carried out to investigate the relative infectivity of aerial and submerged conidia of Metarhizium flavoviride to Schistocerca gregaria and Zonocerus variegatus. The effect of formulation and application method on initial infectivity and field persistence of these conidia was investigated. Strain IMI 330189 was highly virulent to S. gregaria but showed relatively low virulence to Z. variegatus. Direct contact with conidia from the initial spray application resulted in 100% mortality of S. gregaria for all formulation and application combinations. The mean survival time of infected locusts was significantly shorter for treatments using a knapsack sprayer containing submerged conidia in water plus 10 ml litre−1 ‘Codacide’™ (seven days), than treatments with aerial conidia in oil using ULV techniques (8.9 days) or submerged conidia in modified (water plus adjuvants) ULV (MULV) (nine days) or in water-based (VLV) applications (9·3 days). Both aerial and submerged conidia persisted long enough in the environment to effect significant mortality via secondary pick-up of spray residue from vegeta-tion. Persistence was greatest in the ULV and MULV treatments, where the oil component of the formulations provided greater protection of the conidia from environmental stresses. The consequences of secondary pick-up of conidia from the different treatments on total mortality from a single application were examined using a simple host–pathogen model. This predicted that the ULV treatment would be much more effective than the other treatments under conditions where direct contact with the spray was limited. The results of these investigations are discussed in the context of development of optimum spray strategies for control of locusts and grasshoppers, and other pests, under different environmental conditions. 相似文献

The establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs), particularly of no‐take areas, is often viewed as a conflict between conservation and fishing. Partially protected areas (PPAs) that restrict some extractive uses are often regarded as a balance between biodiversity conservation and socio‐economic viability. Few attempts have been made to generalize the ecological effects of PPAs. We synthesized the results of empirical studies that compared PPAs to (i) no‐take reserves (NTRs) and (ii) to open access (Open) areas, to assess the potential benefits of different levels of protection for fish populations. Response to protection was examined in relation to MPA parameters and the exploitation status of fish. Our syntheses suggest that while PPAs significantly enhance density and biomass of fish relative to Open areas, NTRs yielded significantly higher biomass of fish within their boundaries relative to PPAs. The positive response to protection was primarily driven by target species. There was a large degree of variability in the magnitude of response to protection, although the size of the PPA explained some of this variability. The protection regime within the PPA provided useful insights into the effectiveness of partial MPAs. We conclude that MPAs with partial protection confer advantages, such as enhanced density and biomass of fish, compared to areas with no restrictions, although the strongest responses occurred for areas with total exclusion. Thus, MPAs with a combination of protection levels are a valuable spatial management tool particularly in areas where exclusion of all activities is not a socio‐economically and politically viable option. 相似文献

High density light detection and ranging (LIDAR) imaging has been shown to be able to define yield stability areas of a field for multi-cropping. Since LIDAR imaging is expensive and not widely available, it was hypothesized that medium resolution GPS elevation data which is commonly collected with variable rate technology (VRT) controllers and crop yield monitors could be used in lieu of LIDAR imaging. If proven, growers would be able to construct yield stability maps of their fields without the expense of obtaining LIDAR imaging. After substituting medium resolution GPS elevation data derived from the crop yield monitors, the procedure developed for developing a crop yield stability map was invoked and tested. The hypothesis that medium resolution GPS data could be used in lieu of LIDAR data was found to be invalid as the map generated incorrectly identified both high yield and medium yield areas of the field as low yielding areas as well as the inverse. While disappointing, high resolution GPS data from real-time kinetics (RTK) systems is yet to be tested and may offer an additional avenue to developing crop yield stability maps. 相似文献

The flavonol contents of 20 varieties of tomato fruit were investigated in relation to variety, size, season, and country of origin. Ten commonly consumed tomato-based food products were also assessed. Free and conjugated flavonols were identified and quantified using reversed-phase HPLC. Ninety-eight percent of flavonols detected in tomatoes were found to occur in the skin. Tomatoes contained, primarily as conjugates, quercetin and kaempferol. The main quercetin conjugate was identified as rutin (quercetin 3-rhamnosylglucoside) by LC-MS. The total flavonol content of the different varieties of tomato that were analyzed varied from 1.3 to 22.2 microgram/g of fresh weight (fw). Smaller cherry tomato fruits originating from warm sunny climates, such as Spain and Israel, were found to contain the highest concentration of flavonols. Among the tomato-based products investigated, tomato juice and tomato purée were rich in flavonols, containing 14-16 microgram/mL and 70 microgram/g fw, respectively.
