In theory, habitat fragmentation alters plant community dynamics by influencing both local (within patch) and regional (among patch) processes. However, the lengthy generation times of plant taxa relative to the short duration of most experiments has precluded studies from assessing the impact of fragmentation at both local and regional scales. Due to their accelerated life cycles, high rates of local extinction, and naturally patchy substrates, epiphyllous bryophyte assemblages are an appropriate plant guild for empirically testing metacommunity-based predictions associated with habitat fragmentation. By examining the local abundance and regional distribution patterns of 67 epiphyllous (leaf-inhabiting) bryophyte species in an experimentally fragmented landscape in Amazonia, we demonstrate that changes in local abundance wrought by habitat fragmentation are best explained by fragment size rather than proximity to forest edge. Furthermore, evidence of a simultaneous inter-specific decline in epiphyll local abundance and regional distribution in small (1- and 10-ha) forest fragments corroborate with metapopulation-based predictions highlighting the importance of immigration in buffering from patch extinction risk (i.e., the rescue effect). Collectively, these results provide indirect evidence that dispersal limitation, rather than compromised habitat quality attributable to edge effects, likely account for species loss from small tropical forest fragments. Whether dispersal limitation is due to increased insularity from regional sources for epiphyll recolonization or rather to lowered within-fragment dispersal potential is unknown; nonetheless, the long-term persistence of these microscopic plant metacommunities depends on the preservation of rain forest reserves of at least 100-ha in size.  相似文献

Acetone and ethanol extracts of the tubercula and several compounds isolated from Aristolochia pubescens (Willd) were bioassayed on velvetbean caterpillars, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner), for evaluation of the insecticidal activities. Of the extracts subjected to bioassay, the acetone extract showed the highest activity. (-)-Cubebin did not show activity against soybean caterpillars, whereas aristolochic acid and ent-kaur-15-en-17-ol increased the larval period. These compounds, and (+)-eudesmin and (+)-sesamin, reduced the viability of this period, giving rise to malformed adults. These extracts and compounds are therefore potential botanical insecticide agents for the control of velvetbean caterpillars in soybean crops.  相似文献

A lectin was purified from the seaweed Gracilaria cornea by hydrophobic interaction chromatography on phenyl-Sepharose CL-4B followed by affinity chromatography on immobilized mucin. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of G. cornea lectin (GCL) revealed a single protein band of approximately 60 kDa, whereas by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 its native molecular mass was 66 kDa. GCL exhibited a single isoeletric point of 4.3 and a 52.5% content of neutral sugars. Furthermore, the EDTA-treated lectin did not show any significant decrease in its ability to agglutinate trypsin-treated chicken erythrocytes. These data suggest that GCL is an acidic, monomeric glycoprotein that probably does not require divalent metal ions for its hemagglutinating activity. GCL hemagglutinating activity was not inhibited by any of the mono-, di-, and trisaccharides tested but was by the complex glycoproteins fetuin and porcine stomach mucin. Exposure of engorged females of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) to 0.1 mg mL(-1) GCL significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the female weight after the oviposition period, the egg mass weight, the hatching period, and the mean larvae survival time.  相似文献

A total of 56 Hy‐line W‐36 hens from 28 to 30 weeks were used on nitrogen balance (NB) trial to estimate daily N maintenance requirements (NMR) and the genetic potential for daily N retention (NRmaxT). The treatments consisted of six graded levels of nitrogen in the diets (N1 = 8; N2 = 16; N3 = 24; N4 = 32; N5 = 40; and N6 = 48 g N/kg of feed), formulated using the dilution technique. The regression analyses between nitrogen intake and excretion were performed to fit the exponential function and to determine the NMR = 292 mg/BWkg0.67, which was applied for further calculation of NRmaxT = 1,883 mg/BWkg0.67. A second NB trial was conducted, and a total of 96 Hy‐line W‐36 hens were used in the same period to estimate the ideal amino acid ratio (IAAR). Twelve treatments with eight replicates and one bird per cage were used. A balanced diet (BD) was formulated to meet the IAAR and the requirement of other nutrients for pullets. The limiting diets were formulated diluting BD with cornstarch and refilled with synthetic AAs and other feed ingredients, except for the AA under study. In each trial, the data of nitrogen intake, excretion, deposition and retention were obtained in a NB trial. The IAAR determined by Goettingen approach was Lys 100, Met+Cys 88, Trp 21, Thr 69, Arg 109, Val 90, Ile 75, Leu 127, Phe+Tir 110, Gly+Ser 73 and His 29%. The IAAR determined by Louvain approach was Lys 100, Met+Cys 88, Trp 21, Thr 69, Arg 104, Val 91, Ile 78, Leu 121, Phe+Tir 119, Gly+Ser 77 and His 29%.  相似文献

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the causal agent of caseous lymphadenitis, a chronic illness that attacks goats and sheep characterized by pyogranulomas formation in lymph nodes and organs. Regarding the current knowledge of the pathogenesis of the caseous lymphadenitis, there is evidence that besides the humoral response the induction of a durable cellular response is fundamental for its control. In this sense, research on antigens of C. pseudotuberculosis that are capable to inducing cellular immunity is an important step for the development of diagnosis tests and more efficient vaccines. In the present study, the interferon-gamma production in cultures of whole blood from infected goats stimulated with secreted bacterial antigen or somatic antigen were used to evaluate the cellular response. The results demonstrated a significant difference in the ability of the two antigens to induce a cellular response. That is, IFN-gamma production was high with cells from infected animals in response to the secreted antigen while IFN-gamma production was low when somatic antigen was used. The concomitant use of these antigens with PWM also showed differences. That is, the secreted antigen increased the IFN-gamma production induced by PWM, while the somatic antigen seems not to have altered the response to PWM.  相似文献
