We examined the effects of salinity on four wild (Phaseolus angustissimus, Phaseolus filiformis, P. microcarpus, and P. vulgaris) and two cultivated (P. acutifolius and P. vulgaris L.) Phaseolus species. Relative growth rate (RGR, g g−1 per day), unit leaf rate (ULR, g m−2 per day), leaf area ratio (LAR, m2 g−1), specific leaf area (SLA, m2 g−1), leaf weight ratio (LWR, g leaf g−1), and rate of ion uptake were calculated for the period between 10 and 20 days after planting. Salinity significantly reduced RGR, ULR, LAR, and SLA whereas LWR showed no definite trend. In all species, except in P. filiformis, ULR, but not LAR, was significantly correlated with RGR, indicating that ULR was an important factor underlying the salinity-induced differences in RGR among species. In P. filiformis, high salinity reduced SLA, and consequently LAR. The significant correlation of SLA and LAR with RGR suggested that growth components affecting leaf area expansion were the primary factors explaining the inhibition of growth in this species. Increasing salinity progressively decreased leaf water vapor conductance. The rate of CO2 assimilation decreased gradually with salinity, showing significant reductions only at the highest salt level (80 mM NaCl). Approximately two-thirds of the reduction in CO2 assimilation rate at high salinity was attributable to reduced stomatal conductance. In P. filiformis, however, neither stomatal conductance nor CO2 assimilation were affected by salt stress. Leaf water and osmotic potentials declined significantly as stress intensified. However, osmotic adjustment permitted the maintenance of positive turgor throughout the growth period. Salinity had a significant effect on tissue concentrations of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Cl and on the uptake rate of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Cl. Thus, in addition to the toxic effects of high concentrations of Na+ and Cl in plant tissue, saline-induced changes in mineral nutrient uptake likely contributed to the reduction of plant growth. It appears that salt tolerance in P. filiformis is associated with Na+ exclusion and organ Na+ compartmentation in roots and stems as well as sustained K+ concentration in leaves and better stomatal control through osmotic adjustment. All other Phaseolus species are Na+ excluders, and maintained turgor-driven extension growth by accumulating Cl (osmotic adjustment), but subsequent weight gain reductions suggest that this led to ion toxicity.  相似文献

The isotope dilution headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for bisphenol A (BPA) developed previously was used successfully in a BPA migration study at 70 degrees C of polycarbonate baby and reusable water bottles recently sold in Canada by using the whole bottles instead of pieces cut from the bottles. Migration of BPA from the PC bottles heated at 70 degrees C was found to increase over the time in the quadratic equations. Migration levels of BPA in water varied from 228 to 521 microg L (-1) or from 0.26 to 0.90 microg cm (-2) after being heated at 70 degrees C for 6 days. The average migration rates of BPA from the PC bottles into water at 70 degrees C ranged from 1.84 to 4.83 ng cm (-2) h (-1).  相似文献

Physiological effects of the commonly used herbicide atrazine were examined by quantifying changes in carbon allocation into macromolecular pools (low molecular weight (LMW) molecules, lipids, polysaccharides, and proteins) of five microalgal species. Despite decreased growth rate in all test populations, total carbon uptake per cell varied among species. Specifically, total carbon uptake per cell was unaffected in Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Isochrysis galbana; increased in Synechococcus sp.; and decreased in Dunaliella tertiolecta and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. In the chlorophytes, P. subcapitata and D. tertiolecta, carbon allocation into LMW molecules increased while carbon allocation into protein decreased. D. tertiolecta also increased carbon allocation into lipids and polysaccharides at the highest atrazine treatment. In the cyanobacterium, Synechococcus sp., carbon allocation into LMW molecules decreased and carbon allocation into protein increased. The diatom, P. tricornutum, had decreased carbon allocation into protein at the highest atrazine concentration tested. No significant macromolecular changes were found in the prymnesiophyte, I. galbana. Alterations in the macromolecular composition of microalgal species may negatively affect higher trophic levels, as nutritionally altered algal cells may have a reduced energy per mass uptake for consumers.  相似文献

Nine accessions of three cucurbit species, ten of eight legume species, three of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and 34 of 14 Solanaceae species were inoculated with a Dutch isolate of the tomato powdery mildew fungus (Oidium lycopersici) to determine its host range. Macroscopically, no fungal growth was visible on sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), lettuce, petunia (Petunia spp.) and most legume species (Lupinus albus, L. luteus, L. mutabilis, Phaseolus vulgaris, Vicia faba, Vigna radiata, V. unguiculata). Trace infection was occasionally observed on melon (Cucumis melo), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), courgette (Cucurbita pepo), pea (Pisum sativum) and Solanum dulcamara. Eggplant (Solanum melongena), the cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum) and three wild potato species (Solanum albicans, S. acaule and S. mochiquense) were more heavily infected in comparison with melon, cucumber, courgette, pea and S. dulcamara, but the fungus could not be maintained on these hosts. All seven tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) accessions were as susceptible to O. lycopersici as tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum cv Moneymaker), suggesting that tobacco is an alternative host. This host range of the tomato powdery mildew differs from that reported in some other countries, which also varied among each other, suggesting that the causal agent of tomato powdery mildew in the Netherlands differ from that in those countries. Histological observations on 36 accessions showed that the defense to O. lycopersici was associated with a posthaustorial hypersensitive response.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the efficacy of maxillary and infraorbital nerve blocks for prevention of cardiovascular and qualitative responses to rhinoscopy, as well as response to skin clamping after assigned nerve block placement.Study designRandomized, blinded, placebo‐controlled cross‐over experimental study.AnimalsEight random‐source mixed breed dogs > 1 year old and weighing between 13 and 22 kg.MethodsWithin three anesthetic episodes, separated by at least 3 days, dogs were assigned to receive either 1 mL lidocaine 2% maxillary nerve block (ML); 0.5 mL lidocaine 2% infraorbital nerve block (IOL); or equal amounts of saline for maxillary or infraorbital nerve block combined as control treatment (S). Monitoring included temperature, respiratory rate, end‐tidal CO2, ECG, heart rate (HR), systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure (SAP, DAP, MAP). Posterior (pR) and anterior rhinoscopies (aR) were performed and scored. Differences from baseline for outcome parameters HR, SAP, DAP, MAP were analyzed using repeated‐measures anova, and results reported as mean ± SD. Binary scores for rhinoscopy were analyzed using logistic regression, and odds ratio was reported.ResultsChanges from baseline for HR and SAP were significant for all treatments, besides ML for pR. Difference in changes from baseline among treatments was statistically significant for HR during pR with ML < S, and for SAP, DAP and MAP in right and left aR with ML < S and IOL > ML, except for DAP in left aR with only IOL > ML. Analysis of the binary score showed that the probability of a response for S and IOL treatments was nearly triple that of the ML treatment. None of the dogs, regardless of the treatments applied, responded to skin clamping.Conclusion and clinical relevanceCardiovascular parameters do not seem to reflect the occurrence of adverse reactions during rhinoscopy. The maxillary nerve block is superior to the infraorbital nerve block, as applied in this study, in preventing adverse reactions during posterior rhinoscopy.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare the physiological parameters, arterial blood gas values, induction quality, and recovery quality after IV injection of alfaxalone or propofol in dogs.Study designProspective, randomized, blinded crossover.AnimalsEight random-source adult female mixed-breed dogs weighing 18.7 ± 4.5 kg.MethodsDogs were assigned to receive up to 8 mg kg?1 propofol or 4 mg kg?1 alfaxalone, administered to effect, at 10% of the calculated dose every 10 seconds. They then received the alternate drug after a 6-day washout. Temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate, direct blood pressure, and arterial blood gases were measured before induction, immediately post-induction, and at 5-minute intervals until extubation. Quality of induction, recovery, and ataxia were scored by a single blinded investigator. Duration of anesthesia and recovery, and adverse events were recorded.ResultsThe mean doses required for induction were 2.6 ± 0.4 mg kg?1 alfaxalone and 5.2 ± 0.8 mg kg?1 propofol. After alfaxalone, temperature, respiration, and pH were significantly lower, and PaCO2 significantly higher post-induction compared to baseline (p < 0.03). After propofol, pH, PaO2, and SaO2 were significantly lower, and PaCO2, HCO3, and PA-aO2 gradient significantly higher post-induction compared to baseline (p < 0.03). Post-induction and 5-minute physiologic and blood gas values were not significantly different between alfaxalone and propofol. Alfaxalone resulted in significantly longer times to achieve sternal recumbency (p = 0.0003) and standing (p = 0.0004) compared to propofol. Subjective scores for induction, recovery, and ataxia were not significantly different between treatments; however, dogs undergoing alfaxalone anesthesia were more likely to have ≥1 adverse event (p = 0.041). There were no serious adverse events in either treatment.Conclusions and clinical relevanceThere were no clinically significant differences in cardiopulmonary effects between propofol and alfaxalone. A single bolus of propofol resulted in shorter recovery times and fewer adverse events than a single bolus of alfaxalone.  相似文献

A 3-year-old, spayed female, mixed-breed dog was evaluated for acute, progressive neurological disease. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed neutrophilic pleocytosis. The dog later developed liver disease, thrombocytopenia, and anemia that were presumably secondary to ceftriaxone administration. Bacterial cultures of blood, urine, and CSF were negative. However, a universal bacterial polymerase chain reaction assay of CSF identified deoxyribonucleic acid from Streptococcus spp. The dog recovered with therapy for streptococcal encephalitis.  相似文献

Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) has become the method of choice in fox rabies control in Europe. During the past three decades fox-mediated rabies virtually disappeared from Western and Central Europe. Following Switzerland, Germany was the second European country to launch ORV field trials on its territory in 1983. This paper provides a historical overview on the emergence of fox rabies in Germany; describing the basic principles and milestones of the German rabies eradication programme and presenting results of two decades of efforts to control the disease in foxes. Also, setbacks as well as country-specific differences and particularities on Germany's long way to rabies elimination in comparison to other European countries are addressed. Since the first field trials in Germany the number of rabies cases steadily decreased from 10 484 in 1983 to three cases recorded in 2006. On February 3rd 2006 the last case of terrestrial rabies in Germany was detected in a fox near the town of Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2008, ORV ceased after 25 years and Germany was officially declared as free from terrestrial rabies. The German rabies eradication programme did cost approximately 100 million euro of which 37 million euro were covered by the EU. For the future, efforts should focus on maintaining a rabies free status by implementing measures to prevent reintroduction of terrestrial rabies from endemic countries.  相似文献
