In a ferromagnet, an applied electric field E invariably produces an anomalous Hall current JH that flows perpendicular to the plane defined by E and M (the magnetization). For decades, the question of whether JH is dissipationless (independent of the scattering rate) has been debated without experimental resolution. In the ferromagnetic spinel CuCr2Se4-xBrx, the resistivity rho (at low temperature) may be increased by several decades by varying x (Br) without degrading M. We show that JH/E (normalized per carrier, at 5 kelvin) remains unchanged throughout. In addition to confirming the dissipationless nature of JH, our finding has implications for the generation and study of spin-Hall currents in bulk samples.  相似文献

A single cesium atom trapped within the mode of an optical cavity is used to generate single photons on demand. The photon wave packets are emitted as a Gaussian beam with temporal profile and repetition rate controlled by external driving fields. Each generation attempt is inferred to succeed with a probability near unity, whereas the efficiency for creating an unpolarized photon in the total cavity output is 0.69 +/- 0.10, as limited by passive cavity losses. An average of 1.4 x 10(4) photons are produced by each trapped atom. These results constitute an important step in quantum information science, for example, toward the realization of distributed quantum networking.  相似文献

The genome of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is known to contain eight open reading frames (ORFs) on the minus strand of the double-stranded DNA replicative intermediate. Data presented here indicate that the DNA plus strand of HIV contains a previously unidentified ORF in a region complementary to the envelope gene sequence. This ORF could encode a protein of approximately 190 amino acid residues with a relative molecular mass of 20 kilodaltons if translation began from the first initiation codon. The predicted protein is highly hydrophobic and thus could be membrane associated. It is possible, therefore, that the HIV genome encodes a protein on antisense messenger RNA.  相似文献

Inactivation of adenylate cyclase in outer segments of retinal photoreceptor cells is proportional to the bleaching of rhodopsin. Membranes of the outer segments also contain a particulate, light-insensitive phosphodiesterase of high specific activity. In electrophysiological experiments, application of cyclic adenosine monophosphate along with a methylxanthine mimics the effects of illumination on the photoreceptor cell of the compound eye of Limulus.  相似文献

Measurements of the dissociation pressure of nitrogen hydrate and oxygen hydrate show that the clathrate hydrate of air with the formula (N(2), O(2)) 6H(2)O should exist below about 800 meters in the Antarctic ice sheet. This accounts for the disappearance of gas bubbles at depths greater than 1200 meters. The hydrate should exist from this depth to prise 0.06 percent of the ice.  相似文献

Phenylketonuria: phenylalanine inhibits brain pyruvate kinase in vivo   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The hypothesis that brain damage in phenylketonuria is related to inhibition of pyruvate kinase by phenylalanine was examined in rat brain in vivo. One hour after a single injection of phenylalanine into the rat, the brains were removed and completely frozen in less than a second. The concentration of phenylalanine in the brain was comparable to that found in phenylketonuric patients. Changes in brain glycolytic intermediates were consistent with inhibition of pyruvate kinase in vivo. The inhibition of pyruvate kinase was apparently compensated for by an increase in phosphoenolpyruvate; no decrease in adenosine triphosphate or creatine phosphate was found.  相似文献

Primate antiserums to human leukemia cells can detect antigens specific for lymphocytic leukemia cells or antigens present on certain myeloid leukemia cells. The antigen specific for lymphocytic leukemia cells is destroyed by treatment with neuraminidase or trypsin.
