The rate of dissolution of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCP) when incorporated in moist soil was investigated using 32P. The moisture content of the DCP-soil mixture, the surface area of the DCP particles and the temperature of incubation of the system are all directly related to the rate of dissolution of the DCP. These results may be explained using a diffusion model in which phosphate ions diffuse from a water film adjacent to the DCP towards a sink provided by the soil.  相似文献

Objective—To describe clinical and surgical findings from New World camelids with acute gastrointestinal disease.
Study Design—Retrospective study.
Animal Population—20 llamas and 7 alpacas.
Methods—Camelids were grouped based on surgical lesions. Clinical and surgical findings were compared between groups and between surviving and nonsurviving camelids.
Results—Twelve of 27 initial celiotomies and 3 of 4 repeat celiotomies were successful. Death occurred from euthanasia during surgery (nine camelids), peritonitis or sepsis (five), aspiration pneumonia (one), and respiratory distress (one). Survival was lowest after celiotomy for proximal obstruction (3 of 10 camelids), ruptured viscus (0 of 4), and necrotizing enteritis (0 of 2) and highest after celiotomy for distal obstruction (10 of 13) and septic peritonitis without ruptured viscus (2 of 2). Before surgery, camelids with proximal obstruction had significantly lower ( P < .05) serum chloride concentrations (median, 97 mEq/L) than those with distal obstruction (median, 109 mEq/L) or ruptured viscus (median, 117 mEq/L). Serum bicarbonate concentration also was highest (median, 34.6 mEq/L) and often greater than 28 mEq/L in camelids with proximal obstruction. Camelids with distal obstruction had significantly lower ( P < .05) nucleated cell counts in peritoneal fluid (median, 700 cells/μL) than those with ruptured viscus (median, 20,600 cells/μL) or septic peritonitis (median, 88,300 cells/μL).
Conclusions—Camelids with proximal obstruction often had hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis. Camelids with distal obstruction had less metabolic derangement and tissue compromise and a higher survival rate.
Clinical Relevance—Awareness of the characteristics of the various types of acute gastrointestinal disease in camelids will augment veterinarians' ability to diagnose and treat these disorders.  相似文献

Objective   To compare the effectiveness of a single long-acting injection of moxidectin, given in either summer or winter, with a two-summer ('standard') treatment strategy for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in spring-lambing Merino ewes.
Design   A replicated study over 2 years in the high winter rainfall environment of western Victoria.
Methods   Measures of worm infection were worm egg counts of ewes and total worm counts of tracer lambs. Measures of production were body weight, proportion of pregnant ewes and number of weaned lambs.
Results   The egg counts of ewes given the standard strategy followed a characteristic pattern, rising to 300 to 600 eggs per gram before the second summer treatment in February. During this time, ewes given long-acting moxidectin in December had zero or negligible counts. There were no consistent differences between tracer worm counts or production measures for the two groups treated in summer, but when data from both years were pooled, the total egg output from December to May was significantly lower for ewes treated with long-acting moxidectin in December. Ewes not treated during summer had lower body weights, and higher worm egg counts and tracer worm counts, showing that this was not a suitable strategy at that time of the year. However, following treatment with long-acting moxidectin in winter, ewes had rapid compensatory weight gain and lower egg output than ewes treated in summer.
Conclusion   A single injection of long-acting moxidectin in December is an effective treatment strategy for Merino ewes lambing in spring.  相似文献

Abstract. A collection of 130 strains of the bacterial fish pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida isolated from diseased salmonids in Denmark, Norway, North America and Scotland has been characterized with regard to protein patterns, antibiotic resistance and exoprotease activity. Whole cell and outer membrane protein profiling could distinguish three different profiles in A. salmonicida. Eight outer membrane proteins were demonstrated (49, 40, 38, 37, 33, 31, 30 and 29 kDa). One protein profile was deficient in a 38 kDa outer membrane protein and instead contained an outer membrane protein of 37 kDa which was not detectable among the other protein profiles. Strains with the 37 kDa outer membrane protein showed multiple low-level antibiotic resistance towards cephalothin, penicillin, chloramp-henicol, tetracycline and quinolones. In addition, these strains were exoprotease deficient. Strains with the 37 kDa protein were unable to degrade cattle and trout serum proteins and displayed a delayed degradation of casein. Haemolysis on cattle blood agar plates was similarly delayed. In vivo examination of extracellular products from a normal protein profile strain and one with the 37 kDa outer membrane protein demonstrated major differences in pathological effects in rainbow trout. The strain possessing the 37 kDa outer membrane protein produced almost no pathological effects while the normal protein profile strain produced typical furuncles.  相似文献
