Summary Australian native and introduced plants were examined, using digoxin immunoassays, to detect the presence of cross-reacting cardiac glycosides. These compounds were found in 27 species from 20 genera. The assay technique can also be used on serum samples to confirm cardiac glycoside ingestion.  相似文献

Six adult domestic shorthair obese cats were given 3-mg/kg gentamicin sulfate by rapid i.v. and by s.c. injection in a cross-over design. The plasma concentration-time data were analyzed using statistical moment theory with no assumption of a specific compartmental model. Means +/- SD for the half-life, which was calculated from the terminal slope of the log concentration-time curve, were 1.37 +/- 0.24 and 1.24 +/- 0.22 h following i.v. and s.c. injection, respectively. The apparent volume of distribution at steady state was 118.55 +/- 19.83 ml/kg, and total body clearance was 1.07 +/- 0.25 ml/kg/min. Bioavailability was 83.58 +/- 14.83% after s.c. administration. The calculated s.c. dose in obese cats to produce an average steady-state concentration of 4 micrograms/ml is 2.5 mg/kg every 8 h compared to 3 mg/kg in normal-weight cats.  相似文献

There is a growing recognition of the harmful effects of lead exposure on avian and mammalian scavengers. This can lead to both lethal and non-lethal effects which may negatively impact wildlife populations. Our objective was to assess medium-term lead exposure in wild Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii). Frozen liver samples (n = 41), opportunistically collected in 2017–2022, were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine liver lead concentrations. These results were then used to calculate the proportion of animals with elevated lead levels (>5 mg/kg dry weight) and examine the role of explanatory variables that may have influenced the results. The majority of samples analysed were from the south-east corner of Tasmania, within 50 km of Hobart. No Tasmanian devil samples were found to have elevated lead levels. The median liver lead concentration was 0.17 mg/kg (range 0.05–1.32 mg/kg). Female devils were found to have significantly higher liver lead concentrations than males (P = 0.013), which was likely related to lactation, but other variables (age, location, body mass) were not significant. These results suggest that wild Tasmanian devil populations currently show minimal medium-term evidence of exposure to lead pollution, although samples were concentrated in peri-urban areas. The results provide a baseline level which can be used to assess the impact of any future changes in lead use in Tasmania. Furthermore, these data can be used as a comparison for lead exposure studies in other mammalian scavengers, including other carnivorous marsupial species.  相似文献

Global Oscillation Network Group data reveal that the internal structure of the sun can be well represented by a calibrated standard model. However, immediately beneath the convection zone and at the edge of the energy-generating core, the sound-speed variation is somewhat smoother in the sun than it is in the model. This could be a consequence of chemical inhomogeneity that is too severe in the model, perhaps owing to inaccurate modeling of gravitational settling or to neglected macroscopic motion that may be present in the sun. Accurate knowledge of the sun's structure enables inferences to be made about the physics that controls the sun; for example, through the opacity, the equation of state, or wave motion. Those inferences can then be used elsewhere in astrophysics.  相似文献

Three small plot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of species of grass and forbs, defoliation regime, inclusion of white clover and forb blend on the herbage dry matter (DM) yield, botanical composition and mineral content of swards managed with zero fertilizer inputs. The results of all three experiments were characterized by decline in herbage production and large variations in treatment effects over the harvest period.
When sown singly with a standard grass mix the species that competed well with grasses and produced annual forb herbage yields greater than 20 t DM ha−1 were black knapweed, oxeye daisy, ribwort plantain, burnet, birdsfoot trefoil, chicory, kidney vetch, red clover and white clover. When sown singly with a standard forb mix, grass species significantly affected the annual yield of total ( P <005). grass ( P <001) and forb ( P <0.001) herbage. The species that most surpressed the yield of forbs were common bent, Yorkshire fog and perennial ryegrass. Those that allowed for the highest yield of forbs were rough meadow grass, sweet vernal grass and crested dogstail. Averaged over the three harvest years, defoliation regime did not significantly affect herbage production, but the inclusion of white clover in mixtures increased the yield of grasses ( P <0.01) The use of rosette-type forb blends increased forb yield ( P <0.01), compared with erect-type blends.
The effects of treatments on herbage N and mineral contents and yields were inconsistent. However, there was some evidence to support the view that the presence of forb species in swards can result in greater contents of minerals in herbage, compared with grass-only swards.  相似文献

The objectives of this experiment were to study the effects of different grazing managements in spring on herbage intake and performance of summer-calving dairy cows and to examine the effects of regrowth in early June on herbage intake and cow performance. Four spring-grazing treatments were applied to predominantly perennial ryegrass swards: Control (C), sward grazed by cows to 6–8 cm sward surface height (SSH); CG16, sward grazed by cows to 3–4 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to a target SSH of 16cm in early June; CG8, sward grazed by cows to 3–4 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to 8cm in early June; and SG8, sward grazed by sheep to 2–3 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to 8 cm in early June, All swards were continuously stocked by summer-calving (May and July) primiparous and multiparous cows from 16 June to 7 September, to a target SSH of 8–10cm. Spring treatments bad marked effects on herbage intakes and milk production. Estimated in July by n alkane analysis, the mean herbage intake ± s.e.d. of cows on each treatment were 1·8, 1·4, 1·4 and 3·0 ± 0·31 kg dry matter (DM) 100 kg live weight (LW)?1 d?1 (P < 0·01) for treatments C, CG16, CG8 and SG8 respectively. Measured in August, intakes were 1·8, 20, 2·1 and 2·4 ± O·33kg DM 100kg LW?1 d?1 respectively. Severe spring grazing led to increased milk yield and reduced milk fat content from summer-calving cows fed 5·2 kg d?1 of a proprietary concentrate. Average milk yields for the eleven experimental cows on each treatment were 24·3, 23·4, 26·2 and 29·0 ± 1·20 kgd?1 (P < 0·01) for C, CG16, CG8 and SG8, and average milk fat contents were 45·4. 42·4, 43·9 and 40·9 ± 1·02gkg?1 (P<0·05) respectively. The results suggest that severe grazing of swards in early season could improve herbage intake and milk yield of summer-calving cows in mid- and late season. The most favourable spring treatment in this respect was severe grazing by sheep. However, this advantage could be negated in midseason by lax grazing at that time.  相似文献

A perennial ryegrass sward was grazed by sheep in April 1993 to a target sward surface height (SSH) of 3 cm to create a high density of grass tillers. From 3 May, the sheep were removed and small plots were established on the sward, when the average tiller density (± s.e.) was 35 900 ± 420 live tillers m−2. Different regrowth treatments were then imposed by allowing plots to regrow to target SSHs of 6 cm (18 g dry matter (DM) M−2), 9 cm (78 g DM m−2), 12 cm (132 g DM m−2) or 15 cm (197 g DM m−2). The plots were then maintained by cutting at either 6 or 9 cm SSH until the end of the experiment on 30 September. Live tiller density was reduced by regrowth beyond 8.9 cm (78 g DM m−2, P <0.001) and leaf-stem ratio and in vitro organic matter digestibility were reduced by regrowth beyond 6.1 cm (18 g DM m−2, P < 0.05). The effect on live tiller density was sustained through the remainder of the season. From the beginning of June to the end of September, maintenance of SSH at an average of 9.1 cm compared with 6.4 cm also resulted in lower live tiller density, live-dead tiller ratio and leaf-stem ratio and higher herbage mass (at least P < 0. 05). There were significant interactions between regrowth SSH and maintenance SSH, so that leaf-stem ratio, live-dead tiller ratio and live tiller density were reduced by regrowth to a SSH of 16–4 cm followed by maintenance at 9.1 cm, compared with regrowth to 6.1 cm and maintenance at 6.4 cm.  相似文献

We examined variability in growth rate during the larval stage of northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) in response to physical and biological environmental factors in 2005 and 2006. The onset of spring upwelling was anomalously delayed by 2–3 months until mid‐July in 2005; in contrast, spring upwelling in 2006 began as a normal year in the northern California Current. Larval and early juvenile E. mordax were collected in August, September, and October off the coast of Oregon and Washington. Hatch dates ranged from May to September, with peaks in June and August in 2005 and a peak in July in 2006, based on the number of otolith daily increments. Back‐calculated body length‐at‐age in the June 2005 hatch cohort was significantly smaller than in the August 2005 cohort, which had comparable growth to the July 2006 cohort. Standardized otolith daily increment widths as a proxy for seasonal variability in somatic growth rates in 2005 were negative until late July and then changed to positive with intensification of upwelling. The standardized increment width was a positive function of biomass of chlorophyll a concentration, and neritic cold‐water and oceanic subarctic copepod species sampled biweekly off Newport, Oregon. Our results suggest that delayed upwelling in 2005 resulted in low food availability and, consequently, reduced E. mordax larval growth rate in early summer, but once upwelling began in July, high food availability enhanced larval growth rate to that typical of a normal upwelling year (e.g., 2006) in the northern California Current.  相似文献
