Captive and wild African elephants frequently suffer tusk fractures. Several institutions shorten the tusks of captive elephants to reduce fractures and injury as a result of behaviour within enclosures. Fracturing or coronal amputations that expose pulp lead to pain for the elephant. Estimating coronal pulp lengths may thus help to minimise the risk of pulp exposure during amputations. We aimed to determine the length of the pulp beyond the lip margin from an external tusk characteristic. Tusks collected from elephants in Namibia and the Kruger National Park had similar morphological relationships. This statistical property allowed us to correct for missing data in our data sets. Pulp volume and pulp length correlated with tusk circumference at the lip. Even so, the circumference at the lip could not predict the length of the pulp in the crown external to the lip. Our findings suggest that tusks, irrespective of sex or age, amputated further than 300 mm from the lip should not expose pulp.  相似文献

A total of 404 isolates of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria , obtained from Capsicum chinense cv. West Indian Red grown in Barbados and Grenada, were differentiated into pathogenic races, and of these, 96 were tested also for selected taxonomic group phenotypes. The response of C. chinense to infection by several X. campestris pv. vesicatoria races and the contribution of races isolated from this cultivar to severity of bacterial spot of bell pepper and tomato were also investigated. P4T2, P5T2 and P6T2 were the predominant races of X. campestris pv. vesicatoria isolated from C. chinense grown in Grenada, whereas nine races (T1, P4, P6, P0T2, P1T2, P4T1, P4T2, P6T1 and P6T2) were isolated in Barbados. Race P4T2 comprised 46.0 and 71.4% of the isolates from Barbados and Grenada, respectively. The 96 isolates, all of which overcame resistance conferred by the gene Bs2 , shared taxonomic group B strain characteristics, including the presence of the β-protein band, positive amylolytic activity and inability to oxidize cis -aconitate. The C. chinense cv. West Indian Red was susceptible only to races of X. campestris pv. vesicatoria that can overcome Bs2 gene resistance. Of six such races identified in Barbados, only P4T1, P4T2 and P6T1 affected bacterial spot-susceptible bell pepper or tomato in the field, and they amounted to only 1.5–2.1% of each sample of isolates from these plant species. Moreover, they were confined to the smallest bacterial spot lesions. Bell pepper was most severely affected by combinations of races T1 with P3T2 and T2 with P0T1, and tomato by race T1 only and combinations of races P0T1 with P0T2 and P1T1 with P1T0, all of which prevailed in the field despite selection against them by C. chinense cv. West Indian Red.  相似文献

An unusual form of bacterial gill disease (BGD) was identified which affected five species of cultured salmonids from Canada (i.e. rainbow trout, chinook salmon and Atlantic salmon), Norway (i.e. brown trout) and Chile (i.e. coho salmon). All outbreaks occurred at low water temperatures (< 10 °C) and with clinical presentations distinct from classical BGD, which is caused by Flavobacterium branchiophilum. In contrast to classical BGD, fish did not show marked respiratory distress with flaring of the opercula, the animals did not orientate at the surface of the water column near inflow water or at the margins of the tanks, and the feed response of the fish was varied. While mortality was increased, it was not precipitous as in classical BGD. Eight outbreaks were examined in greater detail using histopathology, scanning electron microscopy, bacteriology and immunohistochemistry. Large numbers of small bacterial rods were seen adhering to the lamellar epithelium of affected gills from all outbreaks. Histologically, the lamellar epithelium appeared swollen, often with evidence of single cell degeneration and exfoliation. In more severe instances, the formation of lamellar synechiae was seen, usually associated with sequestration of bacteria between fused lamellae. By contrast with typical BGD, overt epithelial hyperplasia, lamellar fusion and filamental clubbing were not common sequelae to infection; instead, the end result was shortened and somewhat stubby lamellae covered with swollen epithelial cells. The predominant bacterium recovered from affected gills was a small, Gram-negative, motile, fluorescent pigment-producing rod that shared phenotypic characteristics with Pseudomonas fluorescens. Polyclonal antisera prepared against three representative isolates indicated a weak antigenic similarity among them. Immunohistochemistry corroborated this finding, in that the antisera reacted strongly with gill sections containing the homologous bacteria, but not against morphologically similar bacteria in heterologous sections. A Gram-negative, yellow pigmented bacterium (YPB), identified as Flavobacterium psychrophilum, was also recovered, but only from the gills in the Ontario outbreaks. Antiserum prepared against this YPB indicated an antigenic similarity among isolates recovered from the Ontario outbreaks, but immunohistochemistry failed to recognize antigenically related bacteria on the gills of fish from the other outbreaks. Based on the unusual clinical presentation and the histopathological appearance of the gills, in conjunction with the absence of filamentous bacteria associated with and recovered from affected gills, the present authors have called this condition ‘atypical bacterial gill disease’ or ABGD.  相似文献

To further characterize the putative role of constitutive and inducible plasma proteins in innate resistance to furunculosis, the present authors compared the alterations in profiles of plasma proteins in resistant and susceptible salmonids, i.e. rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), respectively. Rainbow trout were injected with prednisolone acetate and exposed to higher water temperature (18 °C versus 10 °C), or injected with purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from a virulent strain of Aeromonas salmonicida , and plasma components were examined by two-dimensional polyacrylamide electrophoresis . Two days after A. salmonicida LPS exposure, rainbow trout had a four- to five-fold increase in concentrations of plasma proteins composed of p48, p19 and p16 subunits, and a significant decrease in a 100-kDa protein group. Consistent elevation or depletion of proteins corresponding to previously reported rainbow trout A. salmonicida LPS-binding pentraxins and lectins in plasma were not observed. Brook trout exposed to A. salmonicida LPS did not have any consistent plasma protein changes. There were no significant alterations in major plasma proteins following temperature shock and prednisolone acetate administration in rainbow trout plasma. These studies demonstrate that rainbow trout with LPS-induced sterile inflammation have few alterations in major plasma proteins or LPS-binding proteins, and do not exhibit the spectrum of acute phase changes induced by inflammation in mammals.  相似文献

A 16-y-old female Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) was evaluated for hyporexia. Examination revealed chronic kidney disease and a large subcutaneous axillary mass with draining tracts that contained numerous small black grains. Histologic examination revealed the presence of intralesional fungal hyphae. Persistent hyporexia and pyogranulomatous disease, as well as progressive cachexia and azotemia occurred despite treatment, and euthanasia was performed. Disseminated phaeohyphomycosis was diagnosed on postmortem examination, additionally affecting various lymph nodes, the nasal cavity, mesenteric adipose tissue, abdominal aorta, pericardium, and kidney. Fungal culture from a deep-tissue sample isolated a pure growth of Curvularia sp., a dematiaceous opportunistic fungus able to cause eumycetomas and/or phaeohyphomycosis. Phaeohyphomycosis is a rare but emerging condition, not previously reported as disseminated disease in an exotic carnivore, to our knowledge. Aggressive systemic antifungal treatment was unsuccessful, likely complicated by diagnostic challenges and concurrent renal disease. The presence of a swelling with abundant grains exiting draining tracts should direct clinicians to the diagnosis of a mycetoma, warranting early and aggressive treatment.  相似文献

Streptococcus agalactiae infections in fish are predominantly caused by beta‐haemolytic strains of clonal complex (CC) 7, notably its namesake sequence type (ST) 7, or by non‐haemolytic strains of CC552, including the globally distributed ST260. In contrast, CC23, including its namesake ST23, has been associated with a wide homeothermic and poikilothermic host range, but never with fish. The aim of this study was to determine whether ST23 is virulent in fish and to identify genomic markers of fish adaptation of S. agalactiae. Intraperitoneal challenge of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus), showed that ST260 is lethal at doses down to 10cfu per fish, whereas ST23 does not cause disease at 10cfu per fish. Comparison of the genome sequence of ST260 and ST23 with those of strains derived from fish, cattle and humans revealed the presence of genomic elements that are unique to subpopulations of S. agalactiae that have the ability to infect fish (CC7 and CC552). These loci occurred in clusters exhibiting typical signatures of mobile genetic elements. PCR‐based screening of a collection of isolates from multiple host species confirmed the association of selected genes with fish‐derived strains. Several fish‐associated genes encode proteins that potentially provide fitness in the aquatic environment.  相似文献

This study was designed to establish the factors, if any, which could affect plasma pregnancy-associated glycoprotein-1 (PAG-1) expression in a study population of 87 pregnant, high-producing dairy cows. The factors examined were: semen providing breed (Holstein-Friesian vs Limousin), outcome of gestation (male vs female newborn, and singleton vs twin pregnancies), lactation number, milk production at pregnancy diagnosis, plasma progesterone concentration, season of gestation (warm period, March–November vs cool period, December–February), and day of gestation (40, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210). Pregnancy was diagnosed by transrectal ultrasound on day 40 post-insemination and by palpation per rectum on days 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210. Blood samples were collected from each animal immediately before each pregnancy diagnosis. The relative contributions of the different factors on PAG-1 concentrations were evaluated by GLM repeated measures analysis of variance. No significant effects of the herd, foetal sex, milk production, lactation number and plasma progesterone concentrations were observed. In contrast, twin pregnancy, the use of Limousin semen and conception during the cool period were correlated with significantly increased plasma PAG-1 concentrations throughout gestation. Our data indicate that both cow well-being during early placental development, determined in our conditions by reduced heat stress when conception occurred in the cool season, and crossbreed pregnancies lead to improved PAG-1 production throughout the gestation period.  相似文献

The demography of bovine infections caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in Ireland is poorly defined. The objective of this study was to describe the demographics of cattle positive to MAP on faecal culture, based on submissions to the Cork Regional Veterinary Laboratory (Cork RVL) from 1994 to 2006. The study focused on all available faecal samples from adult cattle with non-responsive chronic diarrhoea that were submitted by private veterinary practitioners to Cork RVL for MAP culture. For each MAP-positive by faecal culture animal, data were collated from Cork RVL and Cattle Movement Monitoring Scheme (CMMS) records. Johne's disease (JD) was confirmed in 110 animals from 86 herds by the Cork RVL between 1994 and 2006, with a rate of positive cases between 15% and 18% over last four years of the study. Two breeds (Holstein/Friesian or Limousin) made up 78% of submissions. Movements were assessed for the 57 study animals with available movement information, 90% died within one year of the test and 26% tested positive in the herd they were born into. The study provides preliminary information about movement trends and demographics of animals with MAP positive submissions. Although the study area is restricted, it includes the most intensive (and economically-important) dairy region in Ireland. The demographics of JD infection from the study area are in agreement with international reports. Further work is required to determine demographic trends, incidence and prevalence of JD throughout Ireland. It is hoped this work may contribute to the development of a surveillance strategy for MAP by regional veterinary laboratories.  相似文献
