Summary Selected tetraploid F1 hybrids, between Tuberosum cultivars and 2x Phureja clones, were compared with standard cultivars in
randomized trials during the period 1980 to 1986 under conditions which simulated British agricultural practice. Hybrids were
superior to standard cultivars in both total and marketable yield, and produced more tubers. We suggest that high yields in

Source-sink dynamics are an emergent property of complex species–landscape interactions. A better understanding of how human activities affect source-sink dynamics has the potential to inform and improve the management of species of conservation concern. Here we use a study of the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) to introduce new methods for quantifying source-sink dynamics that simultaneously describe the population-wide consequences of changes to landscape connectivity. Our spotted owl model is mechanistic, spatially-explicit, individual-based, and incorporates competition with barred owls (Strix varia). Our observations of spotted owl source-sink dynamics could not have been inferred solely from habitat quality, and were sensitive to landscape connectivity and the spatial sampling schemes employed by the model. We conclude that a clear understanding of source-sink dynamics can best be obtained from sampling simultaneously at multiple spatial scales. Our methodology is general, can be readily adapted to other systems, and will work with population models ranging from simple and low-parameter to complex and data-intensive. 相似文献

The genetic similarity of Campylobacter jejuni isolates from pets, compared to human clinical cases and retail food isolates collected in Ireland over 2001-2006 was investigated by cluster analysis of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) fingerprinting profiles. Comparison of the PFGE profiles of 60 pet isolates and 109 human isolates revealed that seven (4.1%) profiles were grouped in clusters including at least one human and one pet C. jejuni isolate. In total six (1.6%) of 60 pet and 310 food profiles were in clusters with at least one food and one pet C. jejuni isolate. The detection of only a small number of genetically indistinguishable isolates by PFGE profile cluster analysis from pets and from humans with enteritis in this study suggests that pets are unlikely to be an important reservoir for human campylobacteriosis in Ireland. However, genetically indistinguishable isolates were detected and C. jejuni from pets may circulate and may contribute to clinical infections in humans. In addition, contaminated food fed to pets may be a potential source of Campylobacter infection in pets, which may subsequently pose a risk to humans. 相似文献

Each cat received each of the four treatments, separated by at least 21 days. Analgesic efficacy was evaluated based on objective (e.g., pressure mat data total force, contact pressure, and contact area) and subjective (e.g., scores for Analgesia Scale [AS], Lameness Scale [LS], and Visual Analog Scale [VAS]) outcome measures for pain assessment. All outcome measures were recorded before and during 30 hours after SU injection. The pre-defined primary outcome measure was the area under the response–time curve (AUC0–30 hours) of the total force of the injected limb. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance. A sequential test procedure was applied and the test sequence stopped in case of a nonsignificant result.ResultsMeloxicam at doses of 0.05 and 0.075 mg kg?1 day?1 PO was significantly different from placebo for the pre-defined primary outcome measure (i.e., AUC0–30 hours of total force). A study to determine the effects of four stocking densities on growth and feed utilization of wild‐caught black sea bass Centropristis striata was conducted in a pilot‐scale recirculating tank system. The outdoor system consisted of 12 insulated fiberglass tanks (dia. = 1.85 m; vol. = 2.17 m3) supported by biological filters, UV sterilizers, and heat pumps. Subadults (N= 525; ×± SD = 249 ± 16.8 g) were stocked at densities of 4.6 fish/m3 (1.18 kg/m3), 16 fish/ m3 (3.91 kg/m3), 25.3 fish/m3 (6.83 kg/m3), and 36 fish/m3 (7.95 kg1m3), with three replicate tanks per treatment. Fish were grown under 35 ppt salinity, 21‐25 C, and under ambient photoperiod conditions. A commercial flounder diet containing 50% protein and 12% lipid was hand‐fed twice daily to satiation for 201 d. Mean (range) total ammonia‐nitrogen, 0.61 (0‐2.1) mg/L, nitrite‐nitrogen, 0.77 (0.04‐3.6) mg/L, and nitrate‐nitrogen 40.1 (0‐306) mg/L were significantly higher (P < 0.0001) in the 25.3 and 36 fish/m3 treatments than in the 4.6 and 16 fish/m3 treatments [0.19 (0.05‐0.5), 0.1 (0.24‐0.63), and 11.9 (1.3‐82.2) mg/L, respectively]. However, there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in growth (RGR = 196.8‐243.1%; DWG = 2.55‐2.83 g/d; and SGR = 0.55‐0.61%/d), coefficient of variation of body weight (CwtV., = 0.24‐0.25), condition factor (K = 2.2‐2.4), feed consumption (FC = 1.45‐1.65%/d), and feed conversion ratio (FCR = 1.45‐1.52) among stocking densities. Final biomass densities on day 201 reached 3.48, 12.0, 21.1, and 27.2 kg/m3 at stocking densities of 4.6, 16, 25.3, and 36 fish/m3, respectively. Survival (83.8‐99.1%) did not differ among treatments. Apparent net protein retention (ANPR) was significantly higher (P < 0.005) for fish stocked at the lower densities of 4.6 and 16 fish/m3 (22.5‐23.7%) than for those stocked at 25.3 and 36 fish/m3 (21‐20.1%). There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in apparent net energy retention (ANER = 55.9‐59.1 %) among stocking densities. Final whole body protein (15.3‐16.3%) and lipid (23.1‐26.4%) levels did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) among treatments. The results demonstrated that growth, survival, and feed utilization were not impaired under stocking densities ranging from 4.6‐36 fish/m3 (3.48‐27.2 kg/m3), despite a slight reduction in water quality at the higher densities. In addition, growth variation and final whole body protein and lipid levels were not influenced by these densities. The results suggest that black sea bass are tolerant of crowding and moderate variations in water quality during intensive culture in recirculating tank systems and that higher stocking densities are possible. 相似文献

Cholesterol utilized for steroid synthesis by ovarian tissue may be derived from de novo synthesis or cellular uptake of lipoprotein cholesterol. The majority of blood cholesterol is transported by either low (LDL) or high (HDL) density lipoproteins, depending on the animal species. Prior to vascularization, only HDL are in follicular fluid and contribute sterol to granulosa cells because other lipoproteins are unable to transverse the basement membrane due to their molecular masses. Following vascularization, both LDL and HDL bathe luteal cells. Most species preferentially use LDL cholesterol as a precursor for ovarian steroid synthesis. The LDL uptake by ovarian tissue occurs by receptor-mediated endocytosis. The receptor recognizes apolipoprotein B of LDL and apolipoprotein E found on some, but not all, HDL. Within a species, a positive relationship may exist between HDL apolipoprotein E content and importance of HDL cholesterol as a precursor for steroidogenesis. A "HDL pathway" exists for uptake of sterol from HDL void of apolipoprotein E. The HDL receptor exhibits broad binding specificity. Unlike LDL, the HDL particle is not internalized, and cholesterol preferentially is taken up relative to other HDL constituents. In most species, lipoproteins, rather than de novo synthesis from acetate, contribute the majority of cholesterol used for steroid production. Trophic hormones increase lipoprotein binding, internalization, degradation and conversion of lipoprotein-derived sterol to steroids, effects that are mediate through cyclic adenosine monophosphate. Knowledge recently acquired regarding lipoprotein sterol utilization by the ovary may be useful in developing nutritional, pharmacological or endocrine manipulations that may positively affect cholesterol clearance by the ovary, steroidogenesis and reproductive performance. 相似文献
