Platelet activating factor as a mediator of equine cell locomotion

Equine polymorphonuclear (PMN) and mononuclear (MN) leucocytes were separated on Percoll gradients and used to study the chemoattractant properties of the polar ether-linked phospholipid, platelet activating factor (PAF). Six concentrations of PAF ranging from 1 ng/ml to 100 g/ml were studied in each of two in vitro assay systems, the agarose microdroplet and a microfilter technique. Very significant (p<0.01) increases in the movement of both PMN and MN cells were obtained with most concentrations of PAF. In two instances there was no apparent concentration-response relationship, although the action of PAF was approximately bell-shaped in two others. The possible significance of these findings for equine inflammatory conditions is discussed.     

Immunophenotype of pulmonary cellular infiltrates in sheep with visceral caseous lymphadenitis

Pulmonary lesions associated with Corynebacterium ovis were analyzed with an indirect immunoperoxidase staining technique using monoclonal antibodies. The predominant cells in abscess walls and surrounding lung parenchyma were large macrophages which expressed major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules on their surfaces. T lymphocytes were prominent in the same sites in the naturally occurring lesions, and SBU-T4-positive ("helper/inducer") cells were the major subset of lymphocytes (mean T4/T8 ratio = 3.5). B lymphocytes and granulocytes comprised minor populations of infiltrating cells. These results implicate activated macrophages and MHC class II-restricted T lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of established C. ovis infections in sheep.     

Releases in israel ofAphelinus perpallidus,a recently introduced parasite of the pecan blackmargined aphid,Monellia caryella

Six shipments totaling 3452 mummies of the blackmargined aphid,Monellia caryella (Fitch), parasitized withAphelinus perpallidus Gahan, were obtained by air freight during the years 1982-1985 from Texas A&M Research Center, El Paso, Texas. About two-thirds of the mummies did not yield parasites. A colony ofA. perpallidus was established in the laboratory. Under laboratory conditions the percentage of emerged parasites was higher than that in the imported mummies, and the parasite had very limited impact on the aphid population. Field releases of the parasite were made but no establishment ofA. perpallidus was observed through the years.     

Retrospective evaluation of xylazine/halothane anesthesia in 125 cattle

A retrospective morbidity and mortality study was carried out on 125 case records of cattle involving xylazine/halothane anesthesia at the Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph between May 1979 and February 1983.     

Acetaminophen toxicosis in a cat

A seven month old domestic shorthaired male cat was presented with a known history of acetaminophen ingestion. Clinical findings included icterus, depression, hypothermia, tachypnea and pronounced edema of the head and neck. Treatment was aimed at providing substrate to assist in conjugation of the drug and reversing methemoglobinemia. Administration of oral acetylcysteine, ascorbic acid and IV fluids was insufficient in this case due to a delay in initiation of treatment. The salient postmortem findings were icterus, subcutaneous and pulmonary edema and evidence of hemolysis in the liver, spleen and urinary tract.     

A review of cancer chemotherapy for pet animals

A review of the principles of cancer chemotherapy for pet animals is presented. The various pharmacological classes of antineoplastic drugs are described with specific references to those drugs that have been widely used in veterinary medicine.
