A cutaneous mass was surgically excised in a 4-year-old African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris). A squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed based on histopathological examination and local recurrence following excision is strongly suspected. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first well-documented report of a cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in this species. 相似文献

The microsporidian species Encephalitozoon cuniculi can infect a wide variety of mammals including man. It is a common parasite in rabbits and several sporadic infections in laboratory rats have been described. Based on molecular data three E. cuniculi strains have been identified. Here we describe the first in vitro propagation of E. cuniculi, which was isolated from a free-ranging rat (Rattus norvegicus). The rat was one of three seropositive animals among 23 rats captured in the city of Zurich. The new isolate was further characterised as strain II ("mouse"-strain) based on the rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequence. Western blot analysis of this isolate revealed slight differences to other available strain II isolates originating from laboratory mice and farmed blue foxes. The new isolate caused disseminated infection in liver and lung upon oral inoculation of Brown Norway (BN) rats and was transmitted to sentinel rats. This rat-adapted isolate will be valuable to study the pathogenesis of Encephalitozoon infections in the rat model. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare 2 surgical approaches (scrotal or abdominal) for castration of guinea pigs and to investigate post-operative infection rates with either technique. Forty-eight guinea pigs were castrated by scrotal or abdominal technique after being randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups (n = 24). Individuals were either castrated by an experienced exotic animal surgeon (n = 12) or by an experienced small animal surgeon (n = 12). Surgical wounds were evaluated daily before euthanasia for histological evaluation 2 wks after surgery. Post-operative infection rate was significantly higher in the scrotal group than in the abdominal group, with a higher rate for the experienced small animal surgeon. Castration of guinea pigs with the abdominal technique is significantly faster and has a significantly lower post-operative infection rate than the scrotal technique. 相似文献

Effective alternatives to anthelmintic treatment against nematode parasites of goats are required because of the high prevalence of benzimidazole resistance. Towards this objective, the nematophagous fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans (Df), was used in a plot study against two main parasitic nematode species of goats, Teladorsagia circumcincta (Tcir) and Trichostrongylus colubriformis (Tcol). Worm-free, culled goats were experimentally infected with strains of Tcir and Tcol to constitute donors. Half of the animals were periodically given Df chlamydospores at a daily dose of 2.5 x 10(5) spores/kg BW while the remaining animals were kept as controls. At 5 time periods i.e. March, May, July, September and November 2001, corresponding to the main grazing season in France for goats, faeces were collected from the 6th day of fungus administration for the following 2 days to obtain approximately 1 kg of faeces from each group of animals: Tcir/Control, Tcol/Control, Tcir/Fungus, Tcol/Fungus. For each period and each group, the faeces were deposited on a 1 m2 grass plot and the grass was cut (3 replicates) on weeks 2, 4, 6, 8,12 after deposition, for infective larval recovery. Larvae were counted and the results were expressed as a ratio of larvae/eggs deposited. On the plots with the control faeces deposited in March, July and September, the grass infectivity due to Tcir and Tcol was similar and the maximum number occurred between 2 and 4 weeks post deposition. In May, the maximum numbers of larvae were not recorded until 8 weeks after deposition, due to high daily temperatures and dryness. In November, larval development took place only for Tcir. On the plots with the fungus treated faeces, a significant reduction in grass infectivity occurred for both nematodes and ranged from 50-60% in May, July and November deposits to 80-90% in the September deposit. On the contrary to these findings, no difference was recorded between the fungus and control plots for the March deposit. In conclusion, D. flagrans is suitable for reducing the number of infective larvae in the herbage during the main part of the grazing period for the most important digestive nematodes of goats. 相似文献

The dogwhelk Nucella lapillus is a predatory marine gastropod living on rocky shores in the North Atlantic. As with many other gastropod species, Nucella was affected by tributyltin (TBT) pollution during the 1970s and 1980s, and local populations underwent extinction. After a partial ban on TBT in the UK in 1987, vacant sites have been recolonized. Levels of genetic diversity and quantitative genetic variation in shell form were compared between recolonized sites and sites that showed continuous population at three localities across the British Isles. Overall, estimates of genetic diversity were only slightly lower in recolonized populations, suggesting that populations have recovered from previous impacts due to the relatively high levels of migration from non‐impacted sites. Molecular and quantitative analyses are broadly concordant and a positive correlation was observed (although not statistically significant) between molecular and quantitative estimates of genetic diversity, indicating the potential usefulness of quantitative methods to complement molecular population genetics analyses. 相似文献

During epidural needle placement in a 32-kg dog the subarachnoid space was punctured and half the intended dose of lidocaine, bupivacaine, and morphine was injected. After recovery from anesthesia the dog showed signs of severe pruritus of the tail base and limbs and myoclonus of the tail and hind limbs. Methadone, acepromazine, ketamine, buprenorphine, and butorphanol were administered to control myoclonus and pruritus, but were unsuccessful. This study aimed to investigate both the pharmacokinetic behavior and tolerance of methotrexate (MTX) in horses to design a specific dosing regimen as a new immunomodulatory drug for long-term treatment. To determine the primary plasma pharmacokinetic variables after single intravenous, subcutaneous or oral administration, six horses were administered 0.3 mg/kg MTX in a crossover design study. After a 10-week washout, MTX was administered subcutaneously to three of the six previously treated horses at a dose of 0.3 mg/kg once per week for 3 months. In both studies, MTX and metabolite concentrations were measured using LC-MS/MS. The absolute bioavailability of MTX was 73% following subcutaneous administration but less than 1% following oral administration. The plasma clearance was 1.54 ml min−1 kg−1 (extraction ratio = 2%). After 24 hr, plasma concentrations were below the LOQ. No adverse effects were noted except for a moderate reversible elevation in liver enzymes (GLDH). With regards to the main metabolites of MTX, very low concentrations of 7-hydroxy-MTX were found, whereas polyglutamated forms (mainly short chains) were found in red blood cells. A subcutaneous dose of 0.2 mg kg−1 week−1 may be safe and relevant in horses, although this has yet to be clinically confirmed. 相似文献

Francisella tularensis, a small Gram-negative facultative intracellular bacterium, is the causative agent of tularaemia, a severe zoonotic disease transmitted to humans mostly by vectors such as ticks, flies and mosquitoes. The disease is endemic in many parts of the northern hemisphere. Among animals, the most affected species belong to rodents and lagomorphs, in particular hares. However, in the recent years, many cases of tularaemia among small monkeys in zoos were reported. We have developed a real-time PCR that allows to quantify F. tularensis in tissue samples. Using this method, we identified the spleen and the kidney as the most heavily infected organ containing up to 400 F. tularensis bacteria per simian host cell in two common squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) from a zoo that died of tularaemia. In other organs such as the brain, F. tularensis was detected at much lower titres. The strain that caused the infection was identified as F. tularensis subsp. holarctica biovar I, which is susceptible to erythromycin. The high number of F. tularensis present in soft organs such as spleen, liver and kidney represents a high risk for persons handling such carcasses and explains the transmission of the disease to a pathologist during post-mortem analysis. Herein, we show that real-time PCR allows a reliable and rapid diagnosis of F. tularensis directly from tissue samples of infected animals, which is crucial in order to attempt accurate prophylactic measures, especially in cases where humans or other animals have been exposed to this highly contagious pathogen. 相似文献
