OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the contribution of energy-dense, nutrient-poor 'extra' foods to the diets of 16-24-month-old children from western Sydney, Australia. DESIGN: An analysis of cross-sectional data collected on participants in the Childhood Asthma Prevention Study (CAPS), a randomised trial investigating the primary prevention of asthma from birth to 5 years. We collected 3-day weighed food records, calculated nutrient intakes, classified recorded foods into major food groups, and further classified foods as either 'core' or 'extras' according to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. SETTING: Pregnant women, whose unborn child was at risk of developing asthma because of a family history, were recruited from all six hospitals in western Sydney, Australia. Data for this study were collected in clinic visits and at participants' homes at the 18-month assessment. PARTICIPANTS: Four hundred and twenty-nine children participating in the CAPS study; 80% of the total cohort. RESULTS: The mean consumption of 'extra' foods was approximately 150 g day(-1) and contributed 25-30% of the total energy, fat, carbohydrate and sodium to the diets of the study children. 'Extra' foods also contributed around 20% of fibre, 10% of protein and zinc, and about 5% of calcium. Children in the highest quintile of 'extra' foods intake had a slightly higher but not significantly different intake of energy from those in the lowest quintile. However, significant differences were evident for the percentage of energy provided by carbohydrate and sugars (higher) and protein and saturated fat (lower). The intake of most micronutrients was also significantly lower among children in the highest quintile of consumption. The intake of 'extra' foods was inversely associated with the intake of core foods. CONCLUSIONS: The high percentage of energy contributed by 'extra' foods and their negative association with nutrient density emphasise the need for dietary guidance for parents of children aged 1-2 years. These preliminary data on commonly consumed 'extra' foods and portion sizes may inform age-specific dietary assessment methods.  相似文献

Over a 2-year period, carrots and surface soil samples (0-25 cm) from commercial fields in Sweden were collected in order to determine the variations in carrot cadmium (Cd) concentration and determine how they are influenced by soil factors. Differences between varieties with respect to Cd concentration were also determined in two field trials. Lipid pro-oxidative properties and deoxygenation/autoxidation patterns of hemoglobins from nonmigratory white-fleshed fish (winter flounder and Atlantic pollock) and migratory dark-fleshed fish (Atlantic mackerel and menhaden) were compared during ice storage at pH 7.2 and 6. A washed cod mince model system and a buffer model system were used for studying lipid changes and hemoglobin changes, respectively. TBARS and painty odor were followed as markers for lipid oxidation. At pH 6, all four hemoglobins were highly and equally active as pro-oxidants. At pH 7.2, pro-oxidation by all hemoglobins except that from pollock was slowed down, and activity ranked as pollock > mackerel > menhaden > flounder. The higher catalytic activities of the hemoglobins at pH 6 than at pH 7.2 corresponded with higher formation of deoxyhemoglobin and methemoglobin. Pollock had the most extensive formation of deoxy- and methemoglobin at both pH values, which could explain its high catalytic activity. The pro-oxidative differences among the other hemoglobins at pH 7.2 did not correlate with deoxygenation and autoxidation reactions. This indicates involvement of other structural differences between the hemoglobins such as differences in the heme-crevice volume. It is suggested that a biological reason for the species differences was their adaptations to different depths/water temperatures.  相似文献

GLEAMS是美国农业部开发的一个模拟农田氮磷循环的模型,主要用来评价农田管理措施的环境效益。本研究运用GLEAMS模型模拟了南京市东郊蔬菜生态系统的氮素循环,将氮素的主要来源和去向作了系统的分类和量化。模拟结果表明,从2003年7月到2005年7月,该区蔬菜生态系统通过施肥施入氮素3750kghm^-2,降水与灌溉水引入氮素57.0kghm^-2;氮素的输出主要有:淋溶1100kghm^-2、流失43.0kghm^-2、作物吸收960kghm^-2、氨态氮挥发260kghm^-2和反硝化913kghm^-2,氮素盈余531kghm^-2;并且计算出该区作物对氮素的吸收利用率仅为21.6%~25.2%。研究表明,该区农业生产对地下水环境的污染较大,农业生产系统的肥料利用率较低。本模拟研究为探索农田最佳施肥量,以及如何改善生态环境奠定了基础。  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of land-use systems (grassland and cropland) and of long-term no-till cropping systems [bare soil, oat/maize (O/M), pigeon pea+maize (P+M)] on the composition of organic N forms in a subtropical Acrisol. Soil samples collected from the 0- to 2.5-cm layer in the study area (Eldorado do Sul RS, Brazil) were submitted to acid hydrolysis and cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) 15N and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. The legume-based cropping system P+M contained the highest contents of non-hydrolysable C and N, hydrolysable C and N, amino acid N and hydrolysed unknown N. The relative proportion of non-hydrolysable N was higher in bare soil (30.0%) and decreased incrementally in other treatments based on the total C and N contents. The amino acid N corresponded to an average of 37.2% of total N, and was not affected by land use and no-till cropping systems. The non-hydrolysable residue contained lower O-alkyl and higher aromatic C concentrations, as revealed by CPMAS 13C NMR spectroscopy, and higher C:N ratio than the bulk soil. No differences in the bulk soil organic matter composition could be detected among treatments, according to CPMAS 13C and 15N NMR spectra. In the non-hydrolysable fraction, grassland showed a lower concentration of aromatic and a higher concentration of alkyl C than other treatments. From CPMAS 15N NMR spectra, it could be concluded that amide N from peptide structures are the main organic N constituent. Amide structures are possibly protected through encapsulation into hydrophobic sites of organic matter and through organomineral interaction.  相似文献

One gram of onion added to the food of rats inhibits significantly (p < 0.05) bone resorption as assessed by the urinary excretion of tritium released from bone of 9-week-old rats prelabeled with tritiated tetracycline from weeks 1 to 6. To isolate and identify the bone resorption inhibiting compound from onion, onion powder was extracted and the extract fractionated by column chromatography and medium-pressure liquid chromatography. A single active peak was finally obtained by semipreparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The biological activity of the various fractions was tested in vitro on the activity of osteoclasts to form resorption pits on a mineralized substrate. Medium, containing the various fractions or the pure compound, was added to osteoclasts of new-born rats settled on ivory slices. After 24 h of incubation, the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase positive multinucleated cells, that is, osteoclasts, were counted. Subsequently, the number of resorption pits was determined. Activity was calculated as the ratio of resorption pits/osteoclasts and was compared to a negative control, that is, medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum only and to calcitonin (10(-12) M) as a positive control. Finally, a single peak inhibited osteoclast activity significantly (p < 0.05). The structure of this compound was elucidated with high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, time-of-flight electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The single peak was identified as gamma-L-glutamyl-trans-S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (GPCS). It has a molecular mass of 306 Da and inhibits dose-dependently the resorption activity of osteoclasts, the minimal effective dose being approximately 2 mM. As no other peak displayed inhibitory activity, it likely is responsible for the effect of onion on bone resorption.  相似文献

Proteins from herring (Clupea harengus) light muscle were extracted using acidic or alkaline solubilization; 92 and 89% of the initial muscle proteins were solubilized at pH 2.7 and 10.8, respectively, of which 96 and 94% were recovered during precipitation at pH 5.5. Consistency of the pH-adjusted muscle homogenates increased with increased raw material age and homogenization intensity; it declined following holding on ice. Some hydrolytic myofibrillar protein degradation occurred during cold storage of the acidified (pH 2.7) homogenates. With alkalized homogenates, hydrolysis was negligible. The total lipid content changed from 0.13 g/g of protein in the muscle to 0.04 g/g of protein in both the acid- and alkali-produced protein isolates. Corresponding values for the phospholipid content were from 0.037 to 0.02 g/g of proteins. Acid- and alkali-produced proteins made gels with equal strain and color. Stress values were equal or lower in acid- versus alkali-produced protein gels. When ice-stored raw material was used, strain and stress values of gels were reduced.  相似文献

Flow of non‐aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) in the unsaturated zone is thought to be driven by gravity with a dominant vertical flow direction, and lateral spreading to be limited to the gradient of the relative permeabilities. The effect of soil profile build‐up, preferential flow, aging, and groundwater level fluctuations is mostly neglected. The objective of our study was to check the effects of such processes on the fate of NAPL in the unsaturated soil zone. At a hazardous waste site, we conducted a field survey of the unsaturated soil zone and monitored the groundwater for a two year period. We conducted spatially resolved and depth dependent soil sampling and analysis and the evaluation of former ram and core drilling protocols. The samples were analyzed for the 16 EPA PAH and alkanes with GC‐MS and GC‐FID. 13C‐NMR spectroscopy was used to assess structural changes of the NAPL phase. Flow of bulk NAPL along macropores and along preferential permeability structures, like sedimentation discontinuities, are the dominant transport pathways which cause large lateral spreading beyond those expected by the relative permeability gradient. Accumulation of NAPL was found at locations with abrupt textural changes and within the zone of capillary rise. Aging of NAPL results in the depletion in soluble and volatile compounds but also in oxidation and polymerization. It increases the chemical diversity and decreases the mobility of the NAPL. Thus, NAPL flow ceases much earlier than expected from the capillary forces. As chemical transformation is restricted to the NAPL water/air interface, a skin‐like thin film is formed which encapsulates and preserves the bulk NAPL from further hardening, limiting contaminant mass transfer from the NAPL to the aqueous phase.  相似文献
