Cattle and sheep, grazed successively on the same pasture and given the same supplementary feeding, developed ataxia and several animals became recumbent. Three cattle died within two weeks and the worst affected sheep were killed for laboratory examination. The supplementary diet which consisted largely of a distillery by-product, malt culms, was submitted for mycological examination and fed to two housed lambs. Aspergillus clavatus was cultured from the culms, and both the affected sheep and the housed lambs showed cerebrospinal degenerative changes. The clinical signs and neuropathology were closely similar to a mycotoxicosis, attributed to A clavatus, which is seen infrequently in cattle in France, Bulgaria, South Africa and China.  相似文献

Torque teno virus (TTV) is frequently detected in humans, livestock and some companion animals. Very little is known about presence of TTV in Canadian livestock and the goal of this study was to evaluate the presence of TTV in swine and cattle using molecular tools. TTV DNA was detected and confirmed by sequencing in the plasma of 90.5% and in the feces of 60.3% of the animals tested in a single swine herd as well as 80.9% and 1.1% in the plasma of individuals from general Quebec swine and cattle populations, respectively. The impact of the TTV presence in livestock population for the agri-food chain should be further investigated.  相似文献

Potato breeding selection AWN86514-2, Solanum tuberosum gp tuberosum, is being released as germplasm that is highly resistant to prevalent North American strains of Phytophthora infestans. This selection has been tested under field conditions in Mount Vernon, Washington (P. infestans US11 and US8 with complex virulence pathotypes), as well as Corvallis, Oregon, and eight other locations in North America (predominantly P. infestans US8) between 1994 and 1997. Both foliage and tubers show partial resistance. Although AWN86514-2 is pollen sterile, it can be successfully used as a female parent. An average of 34% of the progeny from crosses between AWN86514-2 and four susceptible clones were resistant to late blight when tested at Toluca, Mexico, in 1996. AWN86514-2 also has high resistance to Verticillium wilt and potato virus Y. AWN86514-2 is late maturing, with medium yields of smooth, longoblong, buffskinned tubers. Specific gravity is high and french fry color from 7 C (45 F) storage is excellent. The male parent of AWN86514-2 was Ranger Russet, a dual purpose french fry and fresh market variety, and the female parent was KSA195-96, a selection made at Aberdeen, Idaho, from Polish germplasm received as true seed from the Polish Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute. Possible sources of the late blight resistance in this clone include S. acaule, S. demissum, S. phureja, S. simiplicifolium, S. stoloniferum, and S. tuberosum gp andigena which are in the lineage of KSA195-96. This germplasm was developed and released by USDA-ARS in cooperation with the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.  相似文献

The serological response of naturally and experimentally infected lambs to orf virus infection was analysed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) together with the Western blotting technique. The combination of these two methods permitted a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the response, which revealed considerable variation between animals. Despite this, all post-exposure sera reacted with a polypeptide (molecular weight 40 kilodaltons) which appears to be a component of the surface tubules that are characteristic of the virus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Neospora caninum is recognised worldwide as a major cause of bovine infectious abortion. There is a real need to develop effective strategies to control infection during pregnancy which may lead to either abortion or congenital transmission. Due to the intracellular nature of the parasite, cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses involving CD4+ve, CD8+ve, γ/δ TCR+ve T cells and NK cells, as well as production of IFN-γ, are thought to be important for protective immunity. In this study we applied a combination of proteomic and immunological approaches to identify antigens of N. caninum that are recognized by CD4+ve T cell lines derived from infected cattle. Initially, N. caninum tachyzoite Water Soluble Antigens (NcWSA) were fractionated by size-exclusion HPLC and then screened for immune-potency using CD4+ve T cell lines. LC-ESI-MS/MS (liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry) was employed to catalogue and identify the proteins comprising three immunologically selected fractions and led to the identification of six N. caninum target proteins as well as sixteen functional orthologues of Toxoplasma gondii. This approach allows the screening of biologically reactive antigenic fractions by the immune cells responsible for protection (such as bovine CD4+ve cells) and the subsequent identification of the stimulating components using tandem mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Secretion of gastric mucins plays an essential role in host protection, and modifications in mucus properties are characteristic of the protective immune responses to pathogens. This study describes the purification and characterisation of sheep gastric mucins, and identification of those proteins that co-purify with mucins, with the potential to modify mucus properties. Gastric mucus was collected and pooled from four abattoir sheep and separated by CsCl density gradient centrifugation. Proteomic analysis of the mucin-containing fraction indicated the presence of gastric mucin (Muc5ac) and several co-purifying proteins, including intelectin-2 (Itln2). Further experimentation indicated that a combination of denaturation and reduction was required to fully release Itln2 from gastric mucin. A putative correlation was found between mucin-bound intelectin concentration and rheological properties in further sheep gastric mucus samples. In conclusion, this study provides the first characterisation of sheep gastric mucins and their purification partners, revealing potentially important mucin-intelectin interactions.  相似文献

Recreational hunting of indigenous wild artiodactyls has been one of the most lucrative and rapidly growing industries in Western Spain over the last five years. In the absence of careful ecological management, one consequence of the commercial exploitation of this natural resource has been the appearance of outbreaks of infectious disease; most notably bovine tuberculosis. From the outset of the study in 1997, we have observed a steady increase in prevalence of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) in both species reaching 1.74 (+/-0.17) in deer in 2002 and 2.32 (+/-0.24) in wild boar. The latter species seems to be most severely affected with pulmonary lesions appearing more chronic than those observed in deer. In this study, we describe the epidemiology of M. bovis in European wild boar (Sus scrofa) and Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) in Extremadura (W. Spain); a region where there are large areas of natural habitat for these species.  相似文献

The efficacy of amoxycillin in the control of laboratory induced Aeromonas salmonicida infection in Atlantic salmon parr was investigated. When given in the diet at a dose rate of 80 mg per kg bodyweight it was effective against both a moderate and severe challenge (with mortality rates in untreated groups of 75 per cent and 45 per cent). At 40 mg per kg it was effective against the moderate challenge only. The plasma levels in these regimens were 1.25 micrograms per ml and 0.3 to 0.6 micrograms per ml and the minimum inhibitory concentration of the challenge strain of A salmonicida was 0.6 micrograms per ml. The potential of the Charm radiobioassay system in detecting antibiotic residues in fish tissue was studied. The level of amoxycillin in muscle and bone from fish in mid-treatment at 80 mg per kg was 0.32 micrograms per ml. After a 12 day withdrawal period at 18 degrees C no residue was detected within the 0.005 micrograms per ml limit of this test.  相似文献
