The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of heat stress during the life of a pig on its final weight, as a first step toward a genetic evaluation for heat tolerance. Data included carcass weights of 23,556 crossbred pigs [Duroc x (Landrace x Large White)] raised on 2 farms in North Carolina and slaughtered from May 2005 through December 2006. Weather data were available from a nearby weather station. Lifetime of a pig was assumed to be partitioned into 2 periods. During an initial period, the effect of heat stress was assumed to be negligible or compensated for later. During the second period ending in slaughtering, the ADG was assumed to be affected linearly by heat load. Weekly heat load was calculated as degrees of average temperature-humidity index in excess of a threshold (18 degrees C). The total heat load (H) was the sum of weekly heat loads during the second period. During the months of January to May H was 0; H reached a peak in September. The final BW during the peak of heat stress decreased about 6 kg compared with BW during months of non-heat stress. Weekly and monthly averages of carcass weight generally moved similarly to H. However, there were large fluctuations unrelated to H; the fluctuations were different on the 2 farms. The model included the effects of farm-year of slaughter, sex, age at slaughter, and H, where age at slaughter and H were linear regressions. In analyses, the threshold was varied from 16 to 20 degrees C, and the second period was varied from 8 to 16 wk. The greatest R(2) (10.4%) was at the threshold of temperature-humidity index = 18 degrees C for a period of 10 wk. Varying the threshold and the length of time reduced R(2) less than 1%. Least squares means of year-month and year-week of carcass weight were calculated using a model with the fixed effects farm-year-month or farm-year-week of slaughter, sex, and age at slaughter (linear covariate), and the random effect of birth litter. Changes in BW of finisher pigs due to heat stress can be quantified by H during the last 10 wk of the life of the pig.  相似文献

Macrolides are considered to be one of the safest anti-infective groups in clinical use, with severe adverse reactions being rare. However, there are limited data about their embryotoxicity and teratogenicity. We aimed to investigate and compare the effects of these agents on embryonic growth and development. Rat embryos were cultured in vitro for 48 h in rat serum. Whole rat serum was used as a culture medium for the control group while different concentrations of spiramycin and azithromycin (1.25-6.25 microg/ml), and clarithromycin (2.5-30 microg/ml) were added to rat serum for the experimental groups. Dose-dependent effects of macrolides on embryonic developmental parameters were compared using morphological methods. Embryos were evaluated for the presence of any malformations. After morphological examination of the embryos, total DNA was extracted from the cells using standard procedures to determine fragmentation of nuclear DNA of embryonic cells. When compared with the control embryos, the macrolides significantly decreased all growth and developmental parameters dose dependently. While clarithromycin was found to cause more developmental toxicity than spiramycin and azithromycin, azitromycin was determined to have more teratogenicity potential. Compared with controls, there was no difference regarding the fragmentation of nuclear DNA of all the agents used. According to these results, when the toxic and teratogenic potential of the used agents compared, because of the lower toxic and teratogenic effects observed with spiramycin, this agent may be preferred for parturients.  相似文献

Incidence of clinical mastitis is highest at drying off and during the periparturient period. Intramammary Escherichia coli infection in high-yielding cows can show a severe clinical response during the early post-partum period. Severe clinical mastitis is mainly determined by cow factors, in particular the functionality of the circulating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) which are recruited to the mammary gland during the inflammatory reaction. There is a co-incidence between the periods of highest incidence of clinical mastitis and specific structural changes in the mammary gland. During the periparturient period, marked changes in various systemic and local hormones are related to the secretory state of the mammary gland epithelium (lactogenesis). Estrogen and progesterone induce proliferation of the mammary epithelium throughout gestation and act as survival factors in different tissues, although conflicting data have been reported on their effect on PMN oxidative burst. Somatotropin (STH), responsible for maintenance of lactation in ruminants, has been shown to positively influence innate immunity and a more rapid recovery in milk production of severely affected animals. The concentration of STH, and as a result also IGF-I levels is, however, quite low during early lactation. IGF-I and its regulating binding proteins are associated with cell survival, modulation of apoptosis and functionality of PMN in humans. During early lactation, bio-availability of IGF-I is decreased, which might reduce its stimulating effects on PMN quality and functionality. PRL, concomitantly known as a lactogenic hormone and an immunoregulatory cytokine, has also been associated with modulation of the immune system. It is expected that in periparturient animals, hormone changes could interfere with the immune response and the clinical response of mastitis.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the agreement between ELISA tests conducted using three O. ostertagia antigens: crude adult worm, larval stage 4 (L4) excretory/secretory (ES) and adult ES. This study was carried out on 289 Holstein cows from five herds in Prince Edward Island and one herd in Nova Scotia. Composite milk samples of these cows were collected (between May and September 2002) from the respective provincial laboratories and sent to the Atlantic Veterinary College where each sample was tested for antibodies to O. Ostertagi using an indirect microtitre ELISA test. Results were expressed as optical density ratio (ODR) values. Each milk sample was tested with three ELISA tests, with each test using a different O. ostertagi antigen. There was a slight rise in ODR values of both adult antigens, between May and August, with higher values obtained using the adult ES antigen. L4 ES ODR values were generally higher than those for both adult antigens during the study period, except for May. There was a more dramatic rise in L4 ES ODR values between May and August. Rises in ODR in May and end of July coincided with periods of mass maturation of L4 to adult worms. The results of the study showed that the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) between tests performed using both ES and the crude antigens were low (crude adult versus adult ES=0.31, crude adult versus L4 ES=0.30). The highest CCC was observed between tests done using both ES antigens (CCC=0.56). Generally, the study results suggest that the antibody response (detectable by the ELISA) is mainly directed against ES antigens (especially L4) than the crude adult worm antigen.  相似文献

Veterinary public health (VPH) issues have received increased attention over the last few years as a result of the rising threat of emerging zoonoses (i.e., those due to globalized trade in animal and animal products and to changes in livestock production systems and the environment). The international dimension of VPH is gradually becoming recognized, and there is a growing need for veterinarians with experience in this field. In order to familiarize (future) veterinarians with the international dimension of VPH, the Department of Public Health and Food Safety of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, has been organizing a course in Veterinary Public Health and Animal Production for over the last 10 years. This course has been intended for Dutch as well as foreign final-year veterinary students and recent veterinary graduates. By bringing together participants from different countries, the course reinforces the international dimension of the issues addressed through the exchange of experiences by the participants themselves. The present article provides information about this course on Veterinary Public Health (VPH): it discusses logistics, didactical approaches, the course program, and the use of information and communication technology (ICT). Special attention is given to the intercultural aspects of higher education, all of which play an important role in the efficient exchange of knowledge between lecturers and students. International courses are an important tool to enable participants to interact in a multicultural environment and address issues that demand international cooperation and a global public health focus.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies were produced against bovine lymphoid cells. The reactivities of the antibodies for membrane determinants were examined on both cell suspensions and cryostat tissue sections prepared from bovine blood, thymus, spleen and lymph nodes. The antibodies were putatively grouped into sets which reacted with monomorphic and polymorphic determinants associated with bovine class I and class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens (MAbs P12 and P3, and R1 and P2 respectively), or associated with differentiation antigens expressed on T cells and monocytes (MAb P5) or exclusively on monocytes (MAb P8). The antibodies were used to identify the surface phenotypes of cells which stimulate (R1+ P5+ P8+) and proliferate (R1- P5+ P8-) in the bovine mixed leukocyte cultures, and cells which proliferate in response to the mitogen, concanavalin A (R1- P5+).  相似文献

During 65 d of storage a gradual increase in fungal activity (evaluated by CO2 production) was observed in a diet with its moisture content elevated to 136 g/kg. This activity was inhibited by supplementation of the wetted diets with either calcium propionate (3 g/kg) or Agrosil (2 g/kg). The fat content of the wetted untreated diet decreased between the 18th and the 45th d of storage from 38 to 29 g/kg. This change was prevented by the addition of either of the two fungistats. The weight gains of 7-d-old female broiler chicks fed on the wetted diets with or without the fungistats from the 18th d after their preparation for 27 d, did not differ significantly (P greater than 0.05) from those of birds fed on the unwetted diet. However, the food:gain ratio of chicks fed on the unwetted diet was significantly (P less than 0.05) better than that of chicks fed on the fungistat-free wetted diet. The results from birds fed on the fungistat-supplemented wetted diets were intermediate. It is concluded that the early stages of fungal activity (characterised by increased CO2 production, without changes or with only a slight decrease in fat content) have only a minor effect on the nutritional value of diets.  相似文献

During the early stages of an Ovine Brucellosis Accredited Free Flock Scheme in New South Wales 62 rams were examined to determine the status of their flocks of origin with regard to infection with Brucella ovis. Forty rams were selected because they were either single reactors to low titre or one of a small number of reactors in a B. ovis complement fixation test of the whole ram flock. Twenty two rams were selected because they had palpable abnormalities within the scrotum but were negative serologically. After serological, pathological, bacteriological and histological examinations they were classified in the ensuing categories: 7 positive, 7 inconclusive, 26 false positive and 22 with other lesions. The usefulness of this classification, particularly within the accreditation scheme is discussed.  相似文献
