Field Test of Digital Photography Biomass Estimation Technique in Tallgrass Prairie

Fuel loading information is important for prescribed fire planning, evaluating wildfire risk, and understanding fire effects in grassland. Yet fuel loads in grasslands often go unmeasured because of the time required to clip plots and process samples, as well as limited access or proximity to a drying oven. We tested the digital photography biomass estimation technique for measuring fuel load in grasslands in two national parks in the eastern Great Plains. The method consists of using percentage image obstruction, as determined by digital photography, to estimate vegetation biomass based on a linear transformation (i.e., regressing dry clipped weights against percent digital obstruction). We used the technique with some modification and measured digital obstruction at two sites at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Missouri (WICR), and three sites at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Kansas (TAPR). The method did not result in strong correlations at either of the two sites at WICR (Site 1: r²=0.02; Site 2: r²=0.32), but performed relatively well at TAPR (Site 1 [<1 yr since burn]: r²=0.82; Site 2 [2 yr since burn]: r²=0.57; Site 3 [1 yr since burn]: r²=0.88). Linear regressions for the three sites at TAPR did not differ in slope (P>0.05). In general, the denser the vegetation, the weaker the relationship between the vegetation biomass of clip plots and the percentage image obstruction of digital images. The digital photography technique may not be useful for estimating fuel loads in grasslands with relatively high biomass (>80 g · 0.1 m^?2) or digital image obstruction >50%. Large amounts of litter may also potentially reduce the accuracy of the technique.     

Review of methodologies and a protocol for the <Emphasis Type="Italic">Agrobacterium</Emphasis>-mediated transformation of wheat

Since the first report of wheat transformation by Agrobacterium tumefaciens in 1997, various factors that influence T-DNA delivery and regeneration in tissue culture have been further investigated and modified. This paper reviews the current methodology literature describing Agrobacterium transformation of wheat and provides a complete protocol that we have developed and used to produce over one hundred transgenic lines in both spring and winter wheat varieties.     

Seasonal allergic dermatitis in sheep

The lesions of a seasonal dermatitis in sheep occurred mainly on the ventral surface of the animals, but in other respects they resembled those of 'sweet itch' in horses. They were primarily an immediate hypersensitivity response and the circumstantial evidence indicated that they were due to the bites of Culicoides species, possibly C obsoletus.     

Treatment of respiratory distress in a prematurely born foal

A foal born 3 weeks prematurely was treated for respiratory distress, using a combination of oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilatory assistance. Clinical response and arterial blood gas tensions were monitored regularly. Continuous positive-airway pressure and intermittent positive-pressure ventilation administered via a nasotracheal tube were effective in improving arterial oxygenation and ventilatory function.     

Pancytopenia caused by bone marrow aplasia in a horse

Pancytopenia was evaluated in a mature Quarter Horse gelding. A diagnosis of bone marrow aplasia was made on the basis of bone marrow hypocellularity. History of drugs administered included penicillin, oxytetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfadiazine, phenylbutazone, dipyrone, flunixin meglumine, and isoxsuprine. Clinical remission was observed after treatment with glucocorticoids, androgens, and broad-spectrum antimicrobials.     

Sequential production of specific antibodies in serum and at the skin surface of cattle following intradermal vaccination with Dermatophilus congolensis

Studies of the temporal changes in specific antibody titres to D. congolensis in serum and washings from inoculated and uninoculated skin indicate that production of IgG1 and IgG2 antibody at the skin surface is a transudative process related to serum antibody concentration. Transport of IgM is likely to be based on a similar mechanism but that of IgA appears to depend on a local secretory process.     

The Effect of Selenium Treatment on the Weight Gains of Lambs

Two trials were conducted with lambs to evaluate the growth promoting effects of selenium administered orally at a level of 5 mg per month during the pasture season.

No statistically significant effect on weight gains was found to be attributable to selenium administration in either the single lamb or the twin lamb experiment. In both trials there was a trend in the data that suggested a deleterious effect of selenium on weight gains.
