Management of bilateral idiopathic renal hematuria in a dog with silver nitrate

Renal hematuria has limited treatment options. This report describes management of bilateral idiopathic renal hematuria in a dog with surgically assisted installation of 0.5% silver nitrate solution. Initial treatment resulted in freedom from clinical signs or recurrent anemia for 10 months; however, recurrence of bleeding following a nephrectomy resulted in euthanasia.     

Extramedullary laryngeal plasmacytoma in a dog

Abstract

CASE HISTORY:?An 8-year-old, female, spayed Border Collie presented with a 3-week history of coughing, choking and haemoptysis.

CLINICAL FINDINGS:?Inspiratory stridor was evident on clinical examination. Cervical radiographs revealed a round soft-tissue mass on the dorsal aspect of the epiglottis. A laryngeal mass was evident on examination under anaesthesia, and an incisional biopsy was obtained. Histopathology revealed a dense proliferation of neoplastic round cells morphologically consistent with plasma cell origin. Immunohistochemisty results were negative for CD3 (T cell marker) and positive for CD79a (B cell marker), resulting in a diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma. The patient was treated with melphalan and prednisolone; clinical signs resolved within 1 week and the mass was no longer evident on laryngoscopy after 1 month of treatment. After 6 months of chemotherapy, the laryngeal mass recurred and euthanasia was requested. There was no evidence of systemic spread on post-mortem examination.

DIAGNOSIS:?Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the canine larynx.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE:?Respiratory extramedullary plasmacytomas are extremely rare with only one laryngeal and two tracheal cases previously reported. This is the first published report of a laryngeal plasmacytoma that recurred despite combination chemotherapy with melphalan and prednisolone.

Signs of progressive central nervous system disease in cattle aged 2 years and older should alert farmers and veterinarians to consider the possibility of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Government veterinarians routinely assess all livestock slaughtered in meat plants in New Zealand for signs of any nervous disorder, including abnormalities of behaviour and mental state and abnormalities of posture and gait.     

Roach (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Rutilus rutilus</Emphasis>) reproductive cycle: a study of biochemical and histological parameters in a low contaminated site

Fish reproduction is subjected to worrying trends in many aquatic environments. In this study, we report the absence of histological and biochemical alterations in fish sampled in a low contaminated site (characterised by the absence of detectable oestrogenic activity and mutagenicity in sediment extracts). A total of 474 roach (Rutilus rutilus) were monthly sampled during 18 months, and no intersex fish were recorded after careful histological examination, thus indicating that the incidence of this phenomenon may be very low under natural conditions. Furthermore, mean male plasma vitellogenin concentration was 24 ng ml⁻¹ and was only slightly elevated during the spawning period (up to 120 ng ml⁻¹) indicating that these low values may be characteristic of a low contaminated site. Of the male roach, 45.3% were sampled, a sex-ratio that did not significantly deviated from the expected 1:1 ratio between male and female. Results also showed that natural conditions can greatly affect the reproductive cycle of roach. Gametogenesis showed a biphasic pattern with first gonad maturation between September and December and a final maturation occurring at the end of winter/early spring. Under decreasing temperatures, particularly below 6°C, gametogenesis was stopped or even regressed with secondary oocytes becoming rare under histological observation. Conversely, elevated temperatures during the winter lead to an earlier gonad maturation.
