The results of a national survey of faeces from clinically normal deer for Salmonella sp. and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are reported. Five isolates of Y. pseudotuberculosis and none of Salmonella sp. were made from 3810 faeces representing 122 farms.  相似文献

Two iron chelates, one toxic (iron ‘butan’) and the other not (iron ‘octan’), were ingested by slugs (Deroceras reticulatum) at either a low (5 g kg−1 diet) or a high (100 g kg−1 diet) dose rate. In tissue sections of the digestive gland and body wall, iron was detected by energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM), using electron spectroscopical imaging (ESI) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The strongest signals for iron were obtained in secondary lysosomes of the resorptive cells in the digestive gland of slugs treated with a low dose of either compound, or with the high dose of iron ‘octan’. At the cell apices of these cells, in endocytotic vesicles and in apically located lysosomes, iron was detected only in slugs fed with either dose of iron ‘octan’. In slugs fed with the high dose of iron ‘butan’, iron could clearly be localised in the epithelial and mucus cells of the skin. The results are discussed with respect to differences in the toxicity of the two iron chelates. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Early ocean survival of Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, varies greatly inter‐annually and may be the period during which later spawning abundance and fishery recruitment are set. Therefore, identifying environmental drivers related to early survival may inform better models for management and sustainability of salmon in a variable environment. With this in mind, our main objectives were to (a) identify regions of high temporal variability in growth potential over a 23‐year time series, (b) determine whether the spatial distribution of growth potential was correlated with observed oceanographic conditions, and (c) determine whether these spatial patterns in growth potential could be used to estimate juvenile salmon survival. We applied this method to the fall run of the Central Valley Chinook salmon population, focusing on the spring and summer period after emigration into central California coastal waters. For the period from 1988 to 2010, juvenile salmon growth potential on the central California continental shelf was described by three spatial patterns. These three patterns were most correlated with upwelling, detrended sea level anomalies, and the strength of onshore/offshore currents, respectively. Using the annual strength of these three patterns, as well as the overall growth potential throughout central California coastal waters, in a generalized linear model we explained 82% of the variation in juvenile salmon survival estimates. We attributed the relationship between growth potential and survival to variability in environmental conditions experienced by juvenile salmon during their first year at sea, as well as potential shifts in predation pressure following out‐migration into coastal waters.  相似文献

The timing of recurring biological and seasonal environmental events is changing on a global scale relative to temperature and other climate drivers. This study considers the Gulf of Maine ecosystem, a region of high social and ecological importance in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean and synthesizes current knowledge of (a) key seasonal processes, patterns, and events; (b) direct evidence for shifts in timing; (c) implications of phenological responses for linked ecological‐human systems; and (d) potential phenology‐focused adaptation strategies and actions. Twenty studies demonstrated shifts in timing of regional marine organisms and seasonal environmental events. The most common response was earlier timing, observed in spring onset, spring and winter hydrology, zooplankton abundance, occurrence of several larval fishes, and diadromous fish migrations. Later timing was documented for fall onset, reproduction and fledging in Atlantic puffins, spring and fall phytoplankton blooms, and occurrence of additional larval fishes. Changes in event duration generally increased and were detected in zooplankton peak abundance, early life history periods of macro‐invertebrates, and lobster fishery landings. Reduced duration was observed in winter–spring ice‐affected stream flows. Two studies projected phenological changes, both finding diapause duration would decrease in zooplankton under future climate scenarios. Phenological responses were species‐specific and varied depending on the environmental driver, spatial, and temporal scales evaluated. Overall, a wide range of baseline phenology and relevant modeling studies exist, yet surprisingly few document long‐term shifts. Results reveal a need for increased emphasis on phenological shifts in the Gulf of Maine and identify opportunities for future research and consideration of phenological changes in adaptation efforts.  相似文献

Arylsulphatase activity was measured in blanket peat from 29 sites in northern England and Wales. Low activities (<0.5 μmolp-nitrophenol h?1 g?1 dry wt) were observed in sites close to urban and industrial areas. Sites remote from such areas had activities an order of magnitude higher.Peat transplanted into a polluted site showed a rapid loss in arylsulphatase activity which declined linearly over 12 weeks. Similar peat transplanted into a less-polluted site showed no such decline over the same period.Laboratory experiments in which peat was watered with solutions containing components of acidic deposition at realistic concentrations showed that these, with the exception of NH+4 ions, decreased enzyme activity. HSO?3 ions (or dissolved and unreacted SO2) produced the greatest decrease in enzyme activity.The results are discussed in relation to the precise cause of the low arylsulphatase activity observed in polluted blanket peat, and the possible use of this as a monitor of the ecological effects of acidic deposition.  相似文献

为了解沧州市滨海盐碱区耕层土壤的盐渍化特征,采集三个时期沧州不同地区耕层土壤(0~20 cm)样品,结合样品实验分析,探究土壤盐分特征。结果表明:①沧州滨海盐碱区耕层土壤离子类型多样,检测的八大离子中氯离子、钠离子、硫酸根、碳酸根+碳酸氢根离子为主要盐分离子,土壤类型为硫酸盐-氯化物型。②相关分析表明,耕层土样中总含盐量与氯离子和钠离子均存在显著或极显著相关关系,沧州市滨海盐碱地耕层土壤的总含盐量一定程上取决于土壤中氯化钠的含量;氯化钠、氯化镁和氯化钙为氯化物的主要组成部分;主要硫酸盐类为硫酸钠、硫酸镁和硫酸钙。③方差分析表明,三个不同采样时期和不同地区均对沧州市滨海区盐碱地的盐渍化的影响存在显著或极显著差异。④主成分分析表明,钠离子、氯离子、镁离子、钙离子和硫酸根与第1主成分相关性较高;钾离子和碳酸根+碳酸氢根与第2主成分相关性较高;第3主成分主要反映硅酸盐类对土壤离子成分的影响。由于钠离子、氯离子、钙离子和硫酸根在土壤中含量相对较高,是表征沧州滨海盐碱区土壤盐渍化的主要特征因子。  相似文献

The fly Drosophila melanogaster is one of the most intensively studied organisms in biology and serves as a model system for the investigation of many developmental and cellular processes common to higher eukaryotes, including humans. We have determined the nucleotide sequence of nearly all of the approximately 120-megabase euchromatic portion of the Drosophila genome using a whole-genome shotgun sequencing strategy supported by extensive clone-based sequence and a high-quality bacterial artificial chromosome physical map. Efforts are under way to close the remaining gaps; however, the sequence is of sufficient accuracy and contiguity to be declared substantially complete and to support an initial analysis of genome structure and preliminary gene annotation and interpretation. The genome encodes approximately 13,600 genes, somewhat fewer than the smaller Caenorhabditis elegans genome, but with comparable functional diversity.  相似文献
