The advent of affordable, ground-based, global positioning information (GPS)–enabled sensor technologies provides a new method to rapidly acquire georeferenced soil datasets in situ for high-resolution soil attribute mapping. Our research deployed vehicle-mounted electromagnetic sensor survey equipment to map and quantify soil variability (?50 ha per day) using apparent electrical conductivity as an indirect measure of soil texture and moisture differences. A portable visible–near infrared (VNIR) spectrometer (350–2500 nm) was then used in the field to acquire hyperspectral data from the side of soil cores to a specified depth at optimized sampling locations. The sampling locations were derived by statistical analysis of the electromagnetic survey dataset, to proportionally sample the full range of spatial variability. The VNIR spectra were used to predict soil organic carbon (prediction model using field-moist spectra: R2 = 0.39; RPD = 1.28; and air-dry spectra: R2 = 0.80; RPD = 2.25). These point values were combined with the electromagnetic survey data to produce a soil organic carbon map, using a random forest data mining approach (validation model: R2 = 0.52; RMSE = 3.21 Mg C/ha to 30 cm soil depth; prediction model: R2 = 0.92; RMSE = 1.53 Mg C/ha to 30 cm soil depth). This spatial modeling method, using high-resolution sensor data, enables prediction of soil carbon stocks, and their spatial variability, at a resolution previously impractical using a solely laboratory-based approach.  相似文献

Classical chemical fractionation of soil sulphur (S) into HI‐reducible S and carbon‐bonded S does not separate S in soil into fractions that have differing mineralization potentials. Other techniques are needed to separate organic S into more labile and less labile fractions of biological significance, irrespective of their bonding relations. We have sequentially fractionated soil S and carbon (C) into their ionic forms released onto ion‐exchange resins and organic S and C extracted in alkali of increasing concentration. We evaluated the technique on pasture and arable soils that had received various fertilizer and cultivation treatments. Total S and C were greater in the soil of the fertilized pasture than in that of the unfertilized pastures. Continuous arable cropping decreased total soil S and C, whereas restoration to pasture caused an accumulation. Resin, 0.1 m NaOH, 1 m NaOH and residual fractions accounted for between 1–13%, 49–69%, 4–16% and 19–38% of total soil S and between 5–6%, 38–48%, 5–7% and 46–53% of total soil C, respectively. Among different S and C fractions, the size of the 0.1 m NaOH and residual fractions changed more with the change in land use and management. The 0.1 m NaOH fraction had a narrower C:S ratio (50–75:1) than did the residual fraction (96–141:1). The significant degree of change in these two fractions, caused by differences in land management, indicates that they may be useful indicators of change in ‘soil quality’.  相似文献

A single-electron transistor scanning electrometer (SETSE)-a scanned probe microscope capable of mapping static electric fields and charges with 100-nanometer spatial resolution and a charge sensitivity of a small fraction of an electron-has been developed. The active sensing element of the SETSE, a single-electron transistor fabricated at the end of a sharp glass tip, is scanned in close proximity across the sample surface. Images of the surface electric fields of a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs heterostructure sample show individual photo-ionized charge sites and fluctuations in the dopant and surface-charge distribution on a length scale of 100 nanometers. The SETSE has been used to image and measure depleted regions, local capacitance, band bending, and contact potentials at submicrometer length scales on the surface of this semiconductor sample.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the first 10 weeks of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic in Hong Kong. The epidemic to date has been characterized by two large clusters-initiated by two separate "super-spread" events (SSEs)-and by ongoing community transmission. By fitting a stochastic model to data on 1512 cases, including these clusters, we show that the etiological agent of SARS is moderately transmissible. Excluding SSEs, we estimate that 2.7 secondary infections were generated per case on average at the start of the epidemic, with a substantial contribution from hospital transmission. Transmission rates fell during the epidemic, primarily as a result of reductions in population contact rates and improved hospital infection control, but also because of more rapid hospital attendance by symptomatic individuals. As a result, the epidemic is now in decline, although continued vigilance is necessary for this to be maintained. Restrictions on longer range population movement are shown to be a potentially useful additional control measure in some contexts. We estimate that most currently infected persons are now hospitalized, which highlights the importance of control of nosocomial transmission.  相似文献
