The nutritional value of the kernel meals of three species of lupin (Lupinus albus, L. angustifolius and L. luteus) was compared against each other and solvent extracted soya bean meal and wheat gluten, when fed to either rainbow trout or red seabream. The digestible nutrient and energy values were determined for each ingredient, based on the diet substitution digestibility method. Each test ingredient was included in test diets at 300 g kg?1. As different faecal collection methods were used on each species, only ingredient comparisons within each fish species study are valid. Protein digestibility for all lupin kernel meals was significantly better than for soya bean meal when fed to red seabream, although only numerically so when fed to rainbow trout. The highest protein digestibility in both fish species was that from the wheat gluten (100.0% for both rainbow trout and red seabream). Energy digestibility for each of the lupin kernel meals (range 62.4%–64.9% in rainbow trout and 60.9%–69.5% in red seabream) was less than that obtained from soya bean meal (75.1% and 81.0% for rainbow trout and red seabream, respectively). However, the higher gross energy content of the lupin kernel meals still resulted in both L. albus and L. luteus providing equivalent levels of digestible energy as that of soya bean meal. Organic matter digestibility was generally poorer for each of the lupin kernel meals relative to that for the soya bean meal and particularly compared with the wheat gluten. Phosphorus digestibility was significantly better in all lupin kernel meals than that from both the soya bean meal and wheat gluten. Highest phosphorus digestibility was that obtained from L. albus kernel meal (100.0% for both rainbow trout and red seabream) although notably the phosphorus digestibility of all lupin kernel meals when fed to rainbow trout was determined at 100%. Similarly the digestibility of phosphorus from lupin kernel meals fed to red seabream was also very high. This study supported the good nutritional value to both rainbow trout and red seabream of kernel meals of all three species of lupin, although the digestible nutrient attributes of kernel meal from L. luteus were particularly favourable.  相似文献

Epistaxis was retrospectively evaluated in 35 dogs. Systemic disease was diagnosed in seven dogs and intranasal disease in 29. Nineteen dogs with intranasal disease had neoplasia. Dogs with neoplasia were older (mean 10.0 years) than dogs with nonneoplastic intranasal disease (mean 5.6 years). Signs persisting for >1 month occurred more often in dogs with intranasal than systemic disease. Unilateral epistaxis did not distinguish intranasal from systemic disease. Only dogs with intranasal disease had facial deformity, decreased airflow, or regional sub-mandibular lymphadenopathy. Dogs with systemic disease had a lower packed cell volume (mean 31.8%) than dogs with intranasal disease (mean 42.7%).  相似文献

In response to stimulation, B lymphocytes pursue a large number of distinct fates important for immune regulation. Whether each cell's fate is determined by external direction, internal stochastic processes, or directed asymmetric division is unknown. Measurement of times to isotype switch, to develop into a plasmablast, and to divide or to die for thousands of cells indicated that each fate is pursued autonomously and stochastically. As a consequence of competition between these processes, censorship of alternative outcomes predicts intricate correlations that are observed in the data. Stochastic competition can explain how the allocation of a proportion of B cells to each cell fate is achieved. The B cell may exemplify how other complex cell differentiation systems are controlled.  相似文献

Summary The behaviour of pollen tubes in intra-and interspecific pollinations of P. vulgaris and P. coccineus has been examined using a combination of phase-contrast, and UV fluorescence microscopy. The results indicate that P. coccineus is self-compatible in terms of pollen tube growth, and that pollen tube inhibition is not responsible for the reciprocal differences in seed set which have been observed in crosses between these species.  相似文献

Laboratory studies show that the reaction of short-lived O2(B3Sigmau) molecules (lifetime approximately 10 picoseconds) with N2 and the photodissociation of the N2:O2 dimer produce NOx in the stratosphere at a rate comparable to the oxidation of N2O by O(1D). This finding implies the existence of unidentified NOX sinks in the stratosphere. The NO2 observed in this experiment is isotopically heavy with a large 15N/14N enhancement. However, photodissociation of this NO2 unexpectedly produced NO molecules with a low 15N/14N ratio. The diurnal odd-nitrogen cycle in the stratosphere will be marked by a complex isotope signature that will be imprinted on the halogen and HOX catalytic cycles.  相似文献

Abstract

AIM: The objective of this study was to utilise multivariable statistical methods appropriate for clustered data to identify mare-related explanatory variables that significantly affected the reproductive performance of Thoroughbred mares in the Waikato region of New Zealand. In addition, we aimed to determine the relative contribution of the mare, stallion and stud farm to reproductive performance.

METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed involving five stud farms in the Waikato region of New Zealand during three consecutive breeding seasons (2006–2008). A total of 1,482 individual mares contributed 2007 mare years and 3,402 oestrous cycles over the three breeding seasons. Reproductive performance was measured using three parameters; (a) first-cycle pregnancy rate (FCPR), (b) end-of-season pregnancy rate (SPR), and (c) the start-of-mating to conception interval.

RESULTS: When controlled for the effects of serving stallion, stud farm and year of study the only significant mare-related variables included in the final models of FCPR, SPR and conception interval were the age of the mare and her reproductive status (classified as dry or foaling). Advancing mare age significantly reduced reproductive performance regardless of reproductive status and foaling mares had significantly poorer reproductive outcomes compared with dry mares when controlled for age. For each additional increase in year of age, the FCPR was reduced by a factor of 0.94 (95% CI=0.92–0.96) and the SPR was reduced by a factor of 0.91 (95% CI=0.88–0.93). Mares older than 14 years of age took longer to conceive after the start-of-mating compared with younger mares. The daily hazard of conception for mares 14 years and older was 0.64 (95% CI=0.47–0.83) times less than mares younger than 9 years of age. Determining the relative contribution of the mare, stallion and stud farm to the FCPR indicated that 95.9% of the variation was at the mare level, 4.1% was at the stallion level and 0% was at the stud farm level. For the SPR the variance components indicated that 92.5% of the variation was at the mare level, 6.7% was at the stallion level and 0.8% was at the stud farm level.

CONCLUSIONS: The reproductive performance of Thoroughbred mares in the Waikato region of New Zealand is influenced by two main mare-related factors; the age of the mare and her reproductive status (dry or foaling). The majority of variation in reproductive performance was associated with mare-level factors and the contribution of the stallion and stud farm was relatively minor.  相似文献

Endoscopic evaluation of changes in gastric lesions of Thoroughbred foals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Gastroendoscopic examinations were conducted on thirty-two 2- to 60-day-old Thoroughbred foals on 5 breeding farms. Repeat gastroendoscopic examinations were performed 35 to 135 days after the initial examination, with the age of foals ranging from 39 to 190 days. On initial endoscopic examination, lesions consisting of ulcers and/or erosions were most prevalent in the stratified squamous epithelial mucosa adjacent to the margo plicatus along the greater curvature of the stomach (15 of 32 foals), and were observed much less frequently at other sites within the stomach. In addition to ulcers and erosions, squamous epithelial desquamation at the margo plicatus was observed in 16 of 19 foals less than 30 days old and in 3 of 13 foals 30 to 60 days old, and was not seen in any foal on repeat endoscopy. At the time of repeat endoscopic examination, the frequency of ulcers and erosions at the margo plicatus was significantly (P less than 0.01) less than at initial examination (4 of 32 foals vs 15 of 32 foals). Lesions had healed in 14 of the 15 foals with lesions at the margo plicatus on the initial examination. Lesions were observed in the glandular mucosa of the fundus in 3 of 32 foals on initial examination and in 6 of 32 foals reexamined. Lesions in the glandular fundus observed on initial examination had healed in 2 of 3 foals, and of the 6 foals with glandular mucosal lesions on reexamination, 5 had developed lesions since the initial examination.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

AIM: To determine the weight, volume, density and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the digital flexor tendons, common digital extensor tendon (CDET) and suspensory ligament (SL) of the forelimb of young Thoroughbred horses in early training, and to assess the response to a training programme of known parameters of superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) tissue at mid-metacarpal level.

METHODS: The tendons of seven 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses in training were inspected, transected into segments of known length, and compared with those from seven untrained horses matched for age, sex and breed. The weight, volume, density and CSA of each segment, and the crimp angle, histological features, and biomechanical ultimate stress and stiffness of tendon samples from the mid-metacarpal region of the SDFT were determined.

RESULTS: There was no macroscopic evidence of swelling or discolouration in any of the tendon segments or cut surfaces. The volumes of SDFT and CDET segments of horses in the trained group were significantly greater than those in the untrained group (p=0.036 and p=0.039, respectively). A greater increase in volume than weight resulted in a lower density in the SDFT but not CDET in trained compared with untrained horses (p=0.038). CSA of these two tendons was significantly greater in the trained group (p=0.002 and 0.036, respectively), the percentage increase being greater in the CDET than the SDFT. The number of tenocytes at four sites in the mid-metacarpal SDFT region was less in trained than untrained horses (p=0.025). There was no histological evidence of inflammation, and no difference in crimp angle between groups. There was no significant between-group difference in stiffness or ultimate stress of tendon strips.

CONCLUSIONS: Volume and CSA of the SDFT and CDET were larger in trained than untrained horses. The SDFT was less dense in the trained group. Because no evidence of tendonitis was detected and training appeared to have no significant effect on crimp angle or biomechanical properties of tendon strips, the size and density changes were presumed to be adaptive and induced by the training.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although evident in this in vitro study, the detection of adaptive from initial pathological increase in size of the SDFT is likely to be difficult in vivo.  相似文献

Pyrenopeziza brassicae (anamorph Cylindrosporium concentricum) is an ascomycete fungus that causes light leaf spot (LLS) disease of brassicas. It has recently become the most important pathogen of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) crops in the UK. The pathogen is spread by both asexual splash‐dispersed conidia and sexual wind‐dispersed ascospores. Such inoculum can be detected with existing qualitative and quantitative PCR diagnostics, but these require time‐consuming laboratory‐based processing. This study describes two loop‐mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays, targeting internal transcribed spacer (ITS) or β‐tubulin DNA sequences, for fast and specific detection of P. brassicae isolates from a broad geographical range (throughout Europe and Oceania) and multiple brassica host species (B. napus, B. oleracea and B. rapa). Neither assay detected closely related Oculimacula or Rhynchosporium isolates, or other commonly occurring oilseed rape fungal pathogens. Both LAMP assays could consistently detect DNA amounts equivalent to 100 P. brassicae conidia per sample within 30 minutes, although the β‐tubulin assay was more rapid. Reproducible standard curves were obtained using a P. brassicae DNA dilution series (100 ng–10 pg), enabling quantitative estimation of amounts of pathogen DNA in environmental samples. In planta application of the β‐tubulin sequence‐based LAMP assay to individual oilseed rape leaves collected from the field found no statistically significant difference in the amount of pathogen DNA present in parts of leaves either with or without visible LLS symptoms. The P. brassicae LAMP assays described here could have multiple applications, including detection of symptomless host infection and automated real‐time monitoring of pathogen inoculum.  相似文献

This study evaluated the potential for manipulating the fatty acid composition of juvenile red seabream, Pagrus auratus. Prior to the start of the study, three groups of fish had been reared for 3 months on a fish oil based diet or diets where the added fish oil had been replaced with either canola or soybean oil. In the present study, fish that had previously been fed either the canola or soybean oil diets were fed a fish oil based diet. Three additional treatments included fish being maintained on their original diets of fish oil, canola oil or soybean oil. Fish were fed their respective diets twice daily to apparent satiety for 32 days. Samples of fish from each treatment were collected after 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 days. Composition and growth of the fish were determined at each sample point. Most treatments showed no differences in growth performance, although fish fed a fish oil diet after previously being fed a soybean oil diet showed slightly better growth. No significant differences among treatments were observed in proximate composition of the fish, although there was a significant increase in total fat and individual fatty acid (g kg?1 live‐weight) content of the fish from all treatments over the period of the study. No significant changes in the relative fatty acid composition (% of total fatty acids) over time were observed in the three treatments where fish were maintained on their original diets. In contrast, fish that were previously fed either the canola or soybean oil diets and were then fed a fish oil diet had significant changes in both the relative (% of total fatty acids) and absolute (g kg?1 live‐weight) fatty acid content. Key changes observed included a decrease in the relative levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as 18 : 2n ? 6 and 18 : 3n ? 3. Increases in the relative levels of the long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (lcPUFA) 20 : 5n ? 3 and 22 : 6n ? 3 were also observed in both treatments. The rates of absolute (g kg?1 live‐weight) change/accumulation of these fatty acids followed an exponential equation that differed for each fatty acid in each treatment. Examination of the retention efficiency of specific fatty acids also showed marked differences between fatty acids within treatments and also differences between treatments. Biologically important fatty acids such as 20 : 5n ? 3 and 22 : 6n ? 3 had only moderate retention efficiencies and these were unaffected by treatment. In contrast, the retention efficiencies of 18 : 2n ? 6 and 18 : 3n ? 3 suggested selective retention of these fatty acids when fed fish oil diets, but moderate catabolism when fed the plant oil diets. There were also high retention efficiencies of most saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids suggestive of active retention and/or active synthesis of these fatty acids by the fish. The results of this study, particularly the increases in lcPUFA, support the usefulness of a fish oil based finisher diet for fish raised predominantly on plant oil based diets.  相似文献
