A new ent-kaurane diterpenoid, phyllostachysin C (1), together with five known compounds, sculponeatins B and C, nodosin, ursolic acid and 2 alpha-hydroxyursolic acid, were isolated from the leaves of Isodon phyllostachys. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of unilaterally castrated horses among horses admitted to the hospital for castration and to compare horses that underwent previous unilateral castration with horses that had cryptorchism. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 16 unilaterally castrated horses and 44 cryptorchid horses. PROCEDURES: Medical records of horses that were admitted to the veterinary medical teaching hospital for castration, including cryptorchid and unilaterally castrated horses, between January 2002 and December 2006 were reviewed. Medical records of unilaterally castrated horses and cryptorchid horses were examined for age, breed, history, diagnostic procedures, surgical technique of cryptorchidectomy, location of the retained testicle, and cost of surgery. RESULTS: Of 160 horses admitted for castration, 16 (10%) had undergone previous unilateral castration and 44 (27.5%) had cryptorchidism. Unilaterally castrated horses were significantly older than cryptorchid horses. No significant difference was found in left versus right distribution of testicles. No significant difference was found in abdominal versus inguinal distribution of left-sided testicles. Unilaterally castrated horses had a significantly lower proportion of right inguinal testicles, compared with cryptorchid horses. The cost of diagnosis and management of unilaterally castrated horses was significantly greater than in cryptorchid horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that the distribution of retained testicles is significantly different in unilaterally castrated horses, compared with cryptorchid horses, which may affect the selection of diagnostic and surgical approaches to unilaterally castrated horses. 相似文献

A precocious line of Eimeria meleagridis was developed by repeated propagation of the parasite in young turkeys and collection of the very first oocysts produced following infection. After 20 generations of selection, the prepatent period was reduced by 4-8 hr. Weight gain of poults given this line, from days 0-3 after infection, was significantly greater than that of poults given the parental strain, indicating that selection resulted in a loss of pathogenicity. Poults immunized with the precocious line produced no oocysts following challenge with the parental strain, indicating that immunogenicity was retained following selection. This is the first published report of the selection of a precocious line of Eimeria in the turkey. 相似文献

Canine infections with Leishmania infantum represent a considerable veterinary medical and public health problem. In this study, immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) and IgG2 specific humoral responses were measured and compared with the delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) cellular response to a leishmanin, in three groups of dogs clinically and serologically characterised as: (I) asymptomatic and direct agglutination test (DAT)-seronegative; (II) asymptomatic and DAT-seropositive; (III) DAT-seropositive and symptomatic. IgG2 was regarded as a marker of disease, since significantly higher levels of this subclass were recorded in the symptomatic dogs. In contrast, the IgG1 response could not be related to clinically relevant infection. A high correlation was observed between IgG2 level and DAT titre; the correlations between IgG1 and IgG2 levels, and between IgG1 level and DAT titre were lower. This may indicate that IgG2 is the main subclass in the specific humoral response which is detected by the DAT. A reduced IgG2 response, albeit not significantly different, was recorded among dogs with clear cellular immune responses detected by a DTH positive reaction. Furthermore, no correlations were observed between cellular response measured by DTH and humoral responses quantified by DAT titre or IgG1 and IgG2 levels. Combining serology and DTH skin test is a practical procedure to assess anti-Leishmania immune responses in dogs. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to measure the direct release of nitric oxide (NO) from the porcine mitral valve using a NO microelectrode. Furthermore, the expression and localization of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the mitral valve was studied using immunohistochemistry, Western blotting and RT-PCR. Results show that bradykinin increases NO release from mitral valves (DeltaBradykinin: 33.71 +/- 10.41 nm NO, P < 0.001, n = 10), whereas N-nitro-l-arginine methyl esther (l-NAME) decreases NO release when compared with basal level (Deltal-NAME: 82.69 +/- 15.66 nm NO, P < 0.005, n = 4). Both protein and mRNA expression of eNOS in mitral valves and in isolated valvular endothelial cells suggest that the NO release is mainly associated with the mitral valve endothelium. It is concluded that direct NO release from porcine mitral valves coincides with eNOS expression. This study documents useful techniques for investigations into the role of local NO release in mitral valve diseases. 相似文献

Assessment of zinc and copper status in weaned piglets in relation to dietary zinc and copper supply

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of weaning and the effect of increasing dietary zinc concentrations on the zinc and copper status of weaned piglets (study 1) and to study the effect of high concentrations of dietary zinc and/or copper on zinc and copper status of weaned piglets (study 2). Study 1 included 54 piglets (six litters of nine piglets). One piglet from every litter was killed 1 day before weaning. The remaining 48 piglets were allocated at weaning (28 days) to four dietary zinc treatments (100, 250, 1000 or 2500 ppm) and subsequently killed 1-2, 5-6 or 14-15 days after weaning. Study 2 included 48 piglets (six litters of eight piglets) allocated to four dietary treatments, consisting of low or high dietary zinc (100 or 2500 ppm) in combination with low or high dietary copper (20 or 175 ppm). All piglets in study 2 were killed 5-7 days after weaning. In both studies, the trace mineral status was assessed by zinc and copper concentrations and alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity in plasma and mucosal tissue. In study 2, lymphocyte metallothionein (MT) mRNA and intestinal mucosa MT mRNA concentrations were included as zinc status markers. The results showed that the zinc status, measured as zinc in plasma and mucosa, was not affected by weaning of the piglets. Plasma copper concentrations decreased during the first 2 weeks after weaning. High dietary copper concentrations did not affect the concentration of copper in plasma, but increased the concentration of copper in mucosa and the concentration of zinc in plasma. The dietary zinc treatments increased the zinc concentration in plasma as well as the zinc and MT mRNA concentration in mucosa. Lymphocyte MT mRNA concentrations did not reflect the differences in dietary zinc supplementation. 相似文献
