In a study of dairy and beef herds on 120 farms in south-western Victoria, losses attributed to grass tetany were shown to have been an important cause of economic loss during the cooler months of 1980. Thin dairy cows had a higher incidence of suspected grass tetany than dairy cows in moderate body condition, and both thin and fat beef cows had a higher incidence than beef cows in moderate body condition. A lower incidence was found among dairy cows when the available pasture or hay contained a high percentage of clover, when cows in moderate body condition had been grazed on pastures topdressed with low rates of potassium fertilisers, and when cows had been rotated onto fresh pasture at least daily rather than at 2 or 3 day intervals. The incidence among dairy cows was also associated with the length of available pasture, the correlation being positive for cows of moderate body condition, but negative for thin cows. Possible reasons for the associations are discussed. Only a small proportion of farmers adopted measures to prevent grass tetany, and those who did often applied them inefficiently. Practicable control measures are suggested on the basis of the survey results.  相似文献

The incidence of wilt was recorded in runner and fruiting crops of 13 strawberry cultivars at 72 locations in southern England in 1989 and 1990, and soil samples from the sites were analysed for Verticillium dahliae . Linear regressions of wilt incidence on inoculum concentration in soil for runner crops of the susceptible cv. Elsanta in both years were significant whilst that for runner crops of the susceptible cv. Hapil in 1989 approached significance; the regression for cv. Elsanta fruiting crops in 1990 was not significant. The inclusion of sand content of soil in the regression model improved the fit for the cv. Hapil data but not for the cv. Elsanta data; neither clay nor silt content of soil significantly improved the fit of the models for any data set. There were insufficient data in either year for regression analysis for other cultivars, but the levels of wilt generally corresponded with the degree of soil infestation and broadly reflected known field resistance. The data were used to estimate an inoculum concentration which corresponds to 5% wilt incidence (IC5) for cv. Elsanta. It is suggested that this could be used as a yardstick for determining the risk of unacceptable levels of wilt in susceptible cultivars on the basis of pre-planting soil analysis.   For the 44 sites where the cropping history over the 15 years prior to soil analysis was available there was no clear association between any crop and soil infestation levels at or above the IC5. However, V.  dahliae was more common at sites with a history of vegetatively propagated crops than at sites which had only supported crops grown from true seed.  相似文献

The previous larval-trajectory modeling studies on Georges Bank were assessed through process-oriented Lagrangian-tracking comparison experiments using the high-resolution Gulf of Maine/Georges Bank Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model (GOM-FVCOM). The results indicate that in a strong nonlinear system such as Georges Bank, the passive tracer movement is driven by a fully three-dimensional Lagrangian flow field that varies in space and time due to large tidal excursion and steep bottom topography. The particle-tracking methods developed based on the assumption of weak nonlinearity of the flow field are not applicable to Georges Bank. The results of previous larval transport studies driven by circulation fields constructed under the weak-nonlinearity assumption need to be interpreted with caution. In the present work, the influence of model physical setups on sea scallop larval dispersal and settlement on Georges Bank and adjacent shelf regions is examined. Distinct differences in the spatial distribution of the passive larvae predicted by the model under various physical conditions suggest that a fully nonlinear model driven by realistic spatially and temporally varying forcing should be employed for Lagrangian-based studies of fishery population dynamics on Georges Bank.  相似文献

The magnetometer and electron reflectometer experiment on the Lunar Prospector spacecraft has obtained maps of lunar crustal magnetic fields and observed the interaction between the solar wind and regions of strong crustal magnetic fields at high selenographic latitude (30 degreesS to 80 degreesS) and low ( approximately 100 kilometers) altitude. Electron reflection maps of the regions antipodal to the Imbrium and Serenitatis impact basins, extending to 80 degreesS latitude, show that crustal magnetic fields fill most of the antipodal zones of those basins. This finding provides further evidence for the hypothesis that basin-forming impacts result in magnetization of the lunar crust at their antipodes. The crustal magnetic fields of the Imbrium antipode region are strong enough to deflect the solar wind and form a miniature (100 to several hundred kilometers across) magnetosphere, magnetosheath, and bow shock system.  相似文献
