This study evaluated the efficacy of an oral live attenuated Edwardsiella ictaluri vaccine against enteric septicemia of catfish in 20 full‐sib fingerling channel catfish families. The vaccine was delivered orally by feeding fish a diet coated with an attenuated E. ictaluri isolate. Sixty‐nine days postvaccination, control and vaccinated fish were challenged with virulent E. ictaluri and mortality was examined for 21 d postchallenge. Vaccinated fish had significantly lower mortality than nonvaccinated fish following challenge (P < 0.001). Mortality of vaccinated fish was 1.7 ± 1.4% as opposed to 47.8 ± 28.7% in nonvaccinated fish. Relative percent survival ranged from 87.7 to 100% with an average of 95.2 ± 4.0% (±SE) among the 20 families of fish. There were significant differences in mortality among families in nonvaccinated fish (P < 0.01) while there were no differences among vaccinated families of fish. Results indicate that the live attenuated E. ictaluri vaccine is effective at reducing mortality in channel catfish exposed to virulent E. ictaluri. These data demonstrate that genetic differences among healthy families of channel catfish are not major considerations in developing an effective vaccination program utilizing the oral vaccination platform described in this study.  相似文献

Vicia villosa Roth (hairy vetch) or Secale cereale L. (rye) residue at 2 to 4 times the natural field rate reduced seedling emergence of a wide variety of weed species. However, the natural rate of residue was insufficient for control of most weed species. The form of the response of weed emergence to increasing rates of residue varied among species: emergence of some species showed a monotonic decline in response to increasing rates of residue whereas emergence of others increased at low rates before declining at higher rates. In addition to reducing number of seedlings, high rates of residue delayed the date of emergence. Seed size was generally not a good indicator of a species' ability to emerge through residue, although one very large seeded weed, Abutilon theophrasti. was especially insensitive to residue. V. villosa and 5. cereale did not differ greatly in their effect on weeds early in the growing season, but V. villosa decomposed more rapidly and allowed greater emergence later in the season. La taille des graines n'était généralement pas un bon indicateur de la capacité des espèces à lever au travers des résidus, bien qu'une trèAs grosse grains, Abutilon theophrasti Medic., était particu-lièrement insensible aux résidus. V. villosa et 5. cereale ne différaient pas beaucoup dans leur effet sur les mauvaises herbes en début de saison, mais V. villosa se décomposait plus rapidement et permettait des levees plus importantes en fin de saison. Die Art und Weise der Reaktion der Keimung auf höhere Riick-stände war von Art zu Art verschieden: Die Keimung einiger Arten nahm mit zunehmender Menge an Ernterückständen gleichmäßig ab, während sie bei anderen bei niedrigen Mengen anstieg, urn dann bei höheren Mengen abzunehmen. Zusätzlich zur Verringerung der Keimpflanzendichte wurde bei hohen Rück-standsmengen die Keimung verzögert. Die Samengröße war im allgemeinen kein guter Indikator für die Fähigkeit einer Art, durch das Rückstandsmaterial zu keimen, obwohl eine Art mit großen Samen, Abutilon theophrasti, gegenüber diesen Rückständen besonders unempfindlich war. Die Rückstände der beiden Kulturpflanzen zeigten zu Beginn der Vegetationsperiode keine großen Wirkungsunterschiede, aber die Rückstände von Vicia villosa zerfielen schneller und ließen später eine stärkere Keimung zu.  相似文献

A method is described for measuring the pelvic dimensions of the ewe from one lateral and one ventro-dorsal radiograph. Estimates of the conjugate and transverse diameters of the pelvic inlet, and the distance separating the lateral ischial tuberosities, accurate to within 5% of post-mortem measurements, were obtained from 11 sheep by employing a large target-film distance and applying correction factors for each of the planes of interest. Estimates of the distance between the posterior promontories of the ischium agreed less well with post-mortem measurements, but this may be related to the difficulty in locating this point accurately at post mortem. The pelvic outlet was estimated poorly by radiographic pelvimetry (r = 0.68) and was considered to be of little value in predicting the size of the pelvic outlet at parturition.  相似文献

Chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll content, growth, and mortality of white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) seedlings were monitored for 2 years after planting under three scenarios of artificial shade: no-shade (control), shade in summer only, and shade all year. The shade frames allowed 50–60% light transmission, with limited effects on air temperature, relative humidity, soil temperature, and soil moisture around seedlings. Based on fluorescence yield and chlorophyll content measurements, summer-only shade reduced photoinhibition and photooxidation, especially in summer and fall; extending to all year shading did not further reduce either photoinhibition or photooxidation. Shade tended to reduce seedling diameter and mortality, but after 2 years the cumulative effect on mortality was not statistically significant. Study results support the establishment of white spruce seedlings under partial forest canopy, especially on sites with harsh environmental conditions.  相似文献

Sponge remains have been identified in the Early Vendian Doushantuo phosphate deposit in central Guizhou (South China), which has an age of approximately 580 million years ago. Their skeletons consist of siliceous, monaxonal spicules. All are referred to as the Porifera, class Demospongiae. Preserved soft tissues include the epidermis, porocytes, amoebocytes, sclerocytes, and spongocoel. Among thousands of metazoan embryos is a parenchymella-type of sponge larvae having a shoe-shaped morphology and dense peripheral flagella. The presence of possible amphiblastula larva suggests that the calcareous sponges may have an extended history in the Late Precambrian. The fauna indicates that animals lived 40 to 50 million years before the Cambrian Explosion.  相似文献

Clinical sickness was observed in domestic ducks, geese, horses and swine during October 1973. All species showed upper alimentary distress with mortalities occurring in the geese. Barley derived from a common source had been fed. Examination of the barley revealed invasion by Fusarium spp and detection of a high level of dermatitic fusariotoxins.  相似文献

The intraspecific variability of E. ictaluri isolates from different origins was investigated. Isolates were recovered from farm‐raised catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in Mississippi, USA, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultured in the Western Hemisphere and zebrafish (Danio rerio) propagated in Florida, USA. These isolates were phenotypically homologous and antimicrobial profiles were largely similar. Genetically, isolates possessed differences that could be exploited by repetitive‐sequence‐mediated PCR and gyrB sequence, which identified three distinct E. ictaluri genotypes: one associated with catfish, one from tilapia and a third from zebrafish. Plasmid profiles were also group specific and correlated with rep‐PCR and gyrB sequences. The catfish isolates possessed profiles typical of those described for E. ictaluri isolates; however, plasmids from the zebrafish and tilapia isolates differed in both composition and arrangement. Furthermore, some zebrafish and tilapia isolates were PCR negative for several E. ictaluri virulence factors. Isolates were serologically heterogenous, as serum from a channel catfish exposed to a catfish isolate had reduced antibody activity to tilapia and zebrafish isolates. This work identifies three genetically distinct strains of E. ictaluri from different origins using rep‐PCR, 16S, gyrB and plasmid sequencing, in addition to antimicrobial and serological profiling.  相似文献

Zebra Chip disease vectored by the potato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli (?ulc) was first reported in Idaho and the Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington in 2011. Since then growers have incurred significant costs for managing the disease. Thus, we conducted an expert opinion survey to estimate expenditure on insecticides dedicated to controlling potato psyllids in the largest potato producing regions of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Results highlight a total of about 9 million US dollars spent on active ingredients targeted at psyllid control. When application costs are added to the cost of insecticides, expenditures total about 11 million US dollars.  相似文献

白僵菌是昆虫的重要病原真菌之一,用于防治多种农林害虫,但环境湿度是影响防治效果的重要因素.因此研究白僵菌的新剂型,提高白僵菌孢子萌发率具有重要意义.本论文在室内设立不同相对湿度,比较白僵菌分生孢子及其微胶囊剂活性.结果表明,随着相对湿度的增加孢子萌发率也增大.水悬液分生孢子萌发率最高达55%,最低为8%;氯化钙悬液孢子萌发率不足10%;微胶囊剂孢子萌发率可高达91%,最低为33%.室内模拟野外条件测定相同分生孢子浓度下的白僵菌水悬液和及其微胶囊剂对沙棘木蠢蛾幼虫的侵染,沙棘木蠢蛾幼虫的死亡率分别为45.54%和84.54%,说明白僵菌微胶囊剂对沙棘木蠢蛾幼虫的侵染明显高于其分生孢子水悬液.  相似文献
