Polioencephalomalacia was diagnosed histologically in cattle from two herds on the Darling Downs, Queensland, during July–August 2007. In the first incident, 8 of 20 18-month-old Aberdeen Angus steers died while grazing pastures comprising 60% Sisymbrium irio (London rocket) and 40% Capsella bursapastoris (shepherd's purse). In the second incident, 2 of 150 mixed-breed adult cattle died, and another was successfully treated with thiamine, while grazing a pasture comprising almost 100% Raphanus raphanistrum (wild radish). Affected cattle were either found dead or comatose or were seen apparently blind and head-pressing in some cases. For both incidents, plant and water assays were used to calculate the total dietary sulfur content in dry matter as 0.62% and 1.01% respectively, both exceeding the recommended 0.5% for cattle eating more than 40% forage. Blood and tissue assays for lead were negative in both cases. No access to thiaminase, concentrated sodium ion or extrinsic hydrogen sulfide sources were identified in either incident. Below-median late summer and autumn rainfall followed by above-median unseasonal winter rainfall promoted weed growth at the expense of wholesome pasture species before these incidents.  相似文献

Background   Merino lambs are currently the subject of much research into the welfare aspects of mulesing and mulesing alternatives.
Objective   Obtain haematology, biochemistry and acute phase protein reference intervals using modern methodologies for female Merino lambs.
Method   Blood was collected from 50, weaned, 9- to 16-week-old, female Merino lambs. Haematology and biochemistry panels were performed using routine automated methods. The acute phase proteins, fibrinogen, serum amyloid A and haptoglobin, were also measured using commercially available techniques. The reference intervals were determined to be the central 95% of results.
Results   Differences in the concentrations for some analytes were seen when compared with reported studies in sheep, but may be explained by the use of sheep of a different signalment, as well as different methodologies for analyte measurement. Overall, most analytes gave similar values to those previously reported in other studies. Notable exceptions were alkaline phosphatase, phosphate and globulins, for which the different results were often attributed to the younger age of the sheep in the present study, and platelets and creatine kinase, for which the elevated levels may have been a result of stress and muscle exertion associated with blood collection and husbandry practices.
Conclusion   Established haematological, biochemical and acute phase protein reference intervals are necessary for the investigation of the systemic impact of mulesing and mulesing alternatives and for the investigation of systemic diseases affecting weaned, 9- to 16-week-old, female Merino lambs in general.  相似文献

The causes and control of type 2 diabetes mellitus are not clear, but there is strong evidence that dietary factors are involved in its regulation and prevention. We have shown that extracts from cinnamon enhance the activity of insulin. The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize insulin-enhancing complexes from cinnamon that may be involved in the alleviation or possible prevention and control of glucose intolerance and diabetes. Water-soluble polyphenol polymers from cinnamon that increase insulin-dependent in vitro glucose metabolism roughly 20-fold and display antioxidant activity were isolated and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. The polymers were composed of monomeric units with a molecular mass of 288. Two trimers with a molecular mass of 864 and a tetramer with a mass of 1152 were isolated. Their protonated molecular masses indicated that they are A type doubly linked procyanidin oligomers of the catechins and/or epicatechins. These polyphenolic polymers found in cinnamon may function as antioxidants, potentiate insulin action, and may be beneficial in the control of glucose intolerance and diabetes.  相似文献

Methyleugenol (MEG) was tested for toxicity/carcinogenicity in a 2-yr carcinogenesis bioassay because of its widespread use in a variety of foods, beverages, and cosmetics as well as its structural resemblance to the known carcinogen safrole. F344/N rats and B6C3F(1) mice (50 animals/sex/dose group) were given MEG suspended in 0.5% methylcellulose by gavage at doses of 37, 75, or 150 mg/kg/day for 2 yr. Control groups (60 rats/sex and 50 mice/sex) received only the vehicle. A stop-exposure group of 60 rats/sex received 300 mg/kg/day by gavage for 53 weeks followed by the vehicle only for the remaining 52 weeks of the study. A special study group (10 animals/sex/species/dose group) were used for toxicokinetic studies. All male rats given 150 and 300 mg/kg/day died before the end of the study; survival of female rats given 150 mg/kg/day and all treated female mice was decreased. Mean body weights of treated male and female rats and mice were decreased when compared to control. Area under the curve results indicated that greater than dose proportional increases in plasma MEG occurred for male 150 and 300 mg/kg/day group rats (6 and 12 month) and male 150 mg/kg/day mice (12 month). Target organs included the liver, glandular stomach, forestomach (female rats) and kidney, mammary gland, and subcutaneous tissue (male rats). Liver neoplasms occurred in all dose groups of rats and mice and included hepatoadenoma, hepatocarcinoma, hepatocholangioma (rats only), hepatocholangiocarcinoma, and hepatoblastoma (mice only). Nonneoplastic liver lesions included eosinophilic and mixed cell foci (rats only), hypertrophy, oval cell hyperplasia, cystic degeneration (rats only), and bile duct hyperplasia. Mice also exhibited necrosis, hematopoietic cell proliferation, and hemosiderin pigmentation. Glandular stomach lesions in rats and mice included benign and malignant neuroendocrine tumors, neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, and atrophy and in mice included glandular ectasia/chronic active inflammation. In female rats, the forestomach showed a positive trend in the incidences of squamous cell papilloma or carcinoma (combined). Male rats also exhibited kidney (renal tubule hyperplasia, nephropathy, and adenomacarcinoma), mammary gland (fibroadenoma), and subcutaneous tissue (fibroma, fibrosarcoma) lesions. Male rats also exhibited malignant mesotheliomas and splenic fibrosis. These data demonstrate that MEG is a multisite, multispecies carcinogen.  相似文献

Microbial mats have been developed to sequester heavy metals from contaminated water. Mixed populations of photosynthetic and heterotrophic bacteria, dominated by Scillatoria spp., were developed for metal tolerance and integrated into a durable, self-sustaining community of microbes stimulated by and attached to ensiled grass. The mat was immobilized on glass wool and layered in flow-through baffled tanks. After allowing 8 weeks for the maturation of the mat, mixed solutions of Zn and Mn (15–16 mg L?1) were passed through a three-tank experimental series. Effluent from each tank was first sampled and then applied to the next tank. This procedure was repeated in triplicate and with six applications of new metal solution per three-tank series. By the third tank, the target metal concentration <1 mg L?1 was always achieved. Mean percentages of the initial influent concentration removed by tanks 1, 2 and 3, respectively, were 72, 93 and 98 for Zn and 78, 97 and 99 for Mn. Mean metal concentrations in the effluents (average of 6 applications) were, for tank 1: Zn (mg L?1) 5.0, Mn (mg L?1) 4.2; for tank 2: Zn 1.6, Mn 0.75; for tank 3: Zn 0.53, Mn 0.19. Mean effluent concentrations from each of the three sequential treatments (average of 6 applications per tank) were for Zn (mg L?1) 5.0, 1.6 and 0.53; for Mn (mg L?1) were 4.2, 0.75 and 0.19. Thus target concentrations were reached in experimental tank 2 for Mn and tank 3 for Zn. Metal removal in the control tank series, containing glass wool only, was 37% for Zn and 5% for Mn (average of 6 applications). Oxygen and redox potential analyses of the mat/glass wool matrix revealed a heterogenous structure of anoxic and oxic zones. Zeta potential analysis of the mat samples identified a mat surface charge ranging from ?12.3 to ?69.2 mV. Various metal removal mechanisms possibly involved with metal sequestering include surface binding to the mat or to mat exudates trapped within the glass wool, precipitation of the metals with anions present in the oxic/anoxic zones, mat mediation of the water conditions in favor of metal-oxide precipitation and active transport of the metals into the cell.  相似文献

Introduced species may impact native species and communities in many ways. One which has received relatively little attention is by serving as resources for natives, thereby altering their ecology. We address such impacts on the California butterfly fauna as currently understood. Eighty-two of California's approximately 236 butterfly species (34%) are reported as ovipositing or feeding on introduced plant taxa. Many more utilize introduced plants as nectar sources. Interactions with introduced plant taxa are not distributed evenly among butterfly species. Alpine and desert butterflies interact with relatively few introduced plants because few exotic plant species have reached and successfully colonized these habitats. Other California butterfly species are specialists on particular plant families or genera with no exotic representatives in California and have thus far failed to recognize any introduced plants as potential foodplants. Some California butterflies have expanded their geographic ranges and/or extended their flight seasons by feeding on exotic plants. However, negative impacts of exotic plant species can also occur. At least three of the state's butterfly species currently lay eggs on introduced taxa that are toxic to larvae. Impacts of introduced plant taxa on California's butterflies are expected to increase as both habitat conversion and alien introductions accelerate.  相似文献

Sex in reptiles is determined by genes on sex chromosomes or by incubation temperature. Previously these two modes were thought to be distinct, yet we show that high incubation temperatures reverse genotypic males (ZZ) to phenotypic females in a lizard with ZZ and ZW sex chromosomes. Thus, the W chromosome is not necessary for female differentiation. Sex determination is probably via a dosage-sensitive male-determining gene on the Z chromosome that is inactivated by extreme temperatures. Our data invite a novel hypothesis for the evolution of temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and suggest that sex chromosomes may exist in many TSD reptiles.  相似文献
