The root morphology (root length, diameter) of the three wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L. cvs Excalibur and Gatcher, and T. turgidum conv. durum (Desf.) McKay cv Durati) grown in zinc (Zn)‐deficient, sandy soil under controlled conditions has been measured by a root scanner coupled to a computer. Wheat plants were supplied with 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.4 mg Zn/kg soil. Excalibur has previously been identified as the Zn‐efficient genotype which can take up more Zn and has higher yield in soils with low plant‐available Zn. Durati is Zn‐inefficient and Gatcher an intermediate genotype with respect to Zn efficiency. Root and shoot dry matter significantly increased at 0.1 mg Zn/kg soil compared to the 0 Zn level. Zinc content in shoots was lower in Durati than in Excalibur and Gatcher at sufficient supply of Zn. Zinc applications had no significant effect on root morphology at two weeks after sowing. At that time, however, the Zn‐efficient genotype Excalibur developed a longer and thinner roots (greater proportion of fine roots with diameter <0.2 mm) than the less efficient Gatcher and Zn‐inefficient Durati. Hence, growing longer and thinner roots and having a greater proportion of thinner roots in the total root biomass early in the growth period may be the two characters associated with the Zn‐efficient genotypes.  相似文献

A genome scan, searching for quantitative trait loci (QTL) for the traits cold tolerance and body weight in tilapia, was performed on a cross between a (Oreochromis niloticus×Sarotherodon galilaeus) male and a (O. mossambicus×O. aureus) female. Fifty‐four microsatellites and 23 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) primer combinations were genotyped and tested for marker–trait associations. Sex‐specific linkage maps were constructed from this data. Twenty‐three point‐wise significant marker–trait associations were found in the genome scan, and putative QTL were subsequently tested in another (On×Sg) × (Om×Oa) family. None of the putative QTL from the first experiment were significant in the second experiment. However, one microsatellite, UNH130, found to be associated to weight in the first experiment, was found to be strongly associated to cold tolerance in the second experiment. Since QTL for cold tolerance and body weight were recently found on the linkage group containing UNH130 (linkage group 23) in another study, this linkage group was investigated more closely using interval mapping. The results provide indications, but not conclusive evidence, of a QTL for cold tolerance on linkage group 23.  相似文献

Gully erosion is one of the main causes of soil loss in drylands. Understanding the dominant mechanisms of erosion is important to achieve effective erosion control, thus in this study our main objective was to quantify the mechanisms involved in gully bank retreat as a result of three processes, falling of entire soil aggregates, transport of soil material by splash and by water running along gully banks (runoff), during rainfall events. The study was conducted in the sloping lands of the KwaZulu-Natal province, a region that is highly affected by gully erosion. Artificial rain was applied at 60 mm h−1 for 45 min at the vertical wall of a gully bank typical to the area. The splash material was collected by using a network of 0.045 m2 buckets. The sediments in the running water were assessed by sampling the runoff collected from a microplot inserted within the base of the bank, and collecting the fallen aggregates after the rainfall simulation was complete. Results indicated that the overall erosion for the simulation was 721 g m−2 h−1. Runoff erosion proved to be the dominant mechanism and amounted to 450 g m−2 h−1, followed by splash and fall down of aggregates (about 170 g m−2 h−1). Gully bank retreat occurred at a rate of 0.55 mm h−1 and assuming that the soil bulk density is 1.3 g cm−3, this corresponds to a retreat of 8.8 mm y−1. Extrapolations to the watershed level, where about 500 m2 of gully bank are observed per hectare, would lead to an erosion rate of 4.8 t ha−1 y−1. These limited results based on a simulated storm show that the three main mechanisms (runoff, splash and fall down of aggregates) are responsible for the retreat of gully banks and that to mitigate gully erosion, appropriate measures are required to control all three mechanisms. Further research studies are needed to confirm and to scale up, both in time and space, as these data are obtained at one location and from a single artificial storm.  相似文献

The radiographic and ultrasonographic appearance of the normal involution process of the feline postpartum uterus has not been previously described. Six queens were examined to determine the normal radiographic and ultrasonographic appearance of the involuting postpartum uterus. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations were performed daily from days one through ten, then on days 12, 14, 18, 24, and 28 postpartum. Radiographically the mean total uterine thickness was 16.5 mm at day one postpartum. By day 14 the mean total uterine thickness was 10.5 mm and by day 24 postpartum the uterus was not radiographically visible. Ultrasonographically at day one postpartum the mean total uterine thickness was 16.6 mm and the mean uterine wall thickness was 2.7 mm. At day 14 postpartum the mean total uterine thickness was 6.2 mm and the mean wall thickness was 2.1 mm. At day 28 postpartum the uterus could still be identified ultrasonographically however individual wall layers were not discernable.  相似文献

Pyrethroid resistance in field populations of Australian Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) is primarily a consequence of the overproduction of esterase isoenzymes which metabolise and sequester pyrethroid insecticides. Biochemical studies have shown that pyrethroid-resistance-associated esterases in H armigera are inhibited by the insecticide synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). Esterase inhibition by PBO did not occur immediately after dosing, but exhibited maximum inhibition 3-4 h after dosage. Esterase activity subsequently recovered until full activity was restored by 24 h. Topical bioassays using a pre-treatment of PBO showed that maximum H armigera mortality was achieved with pre-treatment times corresponding to maximum esterase inhibition. These results demonstrated that, with correct temporal application, PBO can restore pyrethroid efficacy against H armigera. It would also be expected that restoration of efficacy with other conventional insecticides, currently compromised by esterase-based resistance mechanisms, would occur.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine scintigraphic, sonographic, and histologic changes associated with renal autotransplantation in cats. ANIMALS: 7 adult specific-pathogen-free cats: 5 males, 2 females, 1 to 9 years old. PROCEDURE: Renal autotransplantation was performed by moving a kidney (5 left, 2 right) to the left iliac fossa. Before and at multiple times after surgery, for a total of 28 days, cats were evaluated by B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography, scintigraphy, and renal biopsy. RESULTS: By 24 hours after surgery, a significant decrease (42%) in mean glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and an increase in mean renal size (81% increase in cross-sectional area) were evident in the transplanted kidney, compared with preoperative values. By postsurgery day 28, reduction in GFR was 23%. Significant changes in renal blood flow velocity were identified in both kidneys. Consistent changes in resistive index or pulsatility index for either kidney could not be identified. When all postoperative histologic data were combined, the histologic score, indicating degree and numbers of abnormalities detected, for the transplanted kidney was significantly higher than that for the control kidney. CONCLUSIONS: Significant changes in renal function, size, and histologic abnormalities develop secondary to acute tubular necrosis in cats after uncomplicated renal autotransplantation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Evaluation of renal size and function may be of benefit for clinical evaluation of feline renal transplant patients, whereas measurement of the resistive index may be of little clinical value.  相似文献

Context

Increasing human populations in urban areas pose a threat to species’ persistence through habitat loss and fragmentation. It is therefore essential that we develop methods to investigate critical habitat loss thresholds and least detrimental landscape configurations.

Objectives

We develop a framework to assess how the pattern of habitat loss impacts the ecological and social characteristics of a landscape and how this varies depending on the species and criteria by which it is judged.

Methods

We use a scenario-based approach to test six propositions in which habitat is lost preferentially based on patch characteristics. We use eight bird and two amphibian species as indicator species. To compare scenarios, we present a method combining the output from a metapopulation model with measures of social impacts of land-cover change in a multiple criteria decision analysis. We also determine whether a habitat loss threshold exists, below which small loss of habitat can lead to large loss of species’ occupancy.

Results

We found that, of the scenarios presented, preferentially losing common habitats and smaller patches was least detrimental for both ecological and social factors. Threshold effects were found for all but the generalist bird species.

Conclusions

We have outlined a workflow which allows for transparent, repeatable comparison between landscapes. This workflow can be used to compare urban landscape plans, or to develop general understanding of the impacts of different forms of habitat loss. Reassuringly, the recommendations based on the scenarios presented are in keeping with received conservation wisdom: to prioritise larger and/or rarer patches.
