Several data from different authors show that Bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) could be a key component in multiple‐etiology diseases, indeed a lower leukocytes number and their impaired functions decrease the resistance to infections. However, most of the information on the impairment of immune function during BVDV infections arise from circumstantial evidence and from experimental infection studies, and few from field data. To assess the effects of BVDV on blood cells parameters, cellular and humoral functions under field conditions, we designed a controlled study in commercial dairy herds, comparing persistent infected (PI) and healthy heifers. A total of 45 heifers were considered, the PI animals were nine, the control animals were 34, while two controls were considered as acute infected animals. The comparison of the mean values in PI calves showed a significant decrease for leukocytes and granulocytes, while platelets showed a significant increase, when compared with control animals. The total number of lymphocytes decreased not significantly in PI animals, while the proportion significantly increased. The number and proportion of monocytes was significantly reduced in PI animals, when compared with controls. The data collected on markers of cellular immunity during our study cannot be compared with the literature because there are no reference values. The presence of a persistent infection affected the cellular enzymes: NAGase, lysozyme and respiratory burst showed a large statistically significant decrease in PI animals when compared with controls. The presence of a persistent infection with BVD virus influenced blood cells number and impaired some blood cell functions. Such impairment confirms that PI animals represent a threat to the herd not only because they could spread BVDV, but also because they are more susceptible to other infectious diseases.  相似文献

Management of banana xanthomonas wilt (XW) (caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum, Xcm) has been impeded by poor adoption of control options that are complex, cumbersome and costly. To improve XW management, this study investigated Xcm survival and latent infections in subsequent generations, survival of latently infected planting materials (suckers), incidence of latent infections in symptomless plants in mats having diseased plants, and XW status across farms and markets in districts previously devastated but currently endemic. On‐station experiments were protected from new infections. Latent bacteria at low levels were detected in up to 20% of the third generation suckers, with a significant (< 0·05) reduction (43–20%) in subsequent generations. Only 3–6% of latently infected suckers succumbed to XW. Incidence of Xcm in symptomless suckers from farmers' fields (with up to 70% incidence) was low (3%) while it increased (8–25%) with disease severity in mats in controlled experiments. In the surveyed districts, incidence had significantly declined with yields observed to have recovered relative to earlier reports, although latent infections remained high. This study provides evidence that if new infections are prevented, fields with high XW incidence can be rejuvenated. It showed incomplete systemic movement of Xcm in mats coupled to a gradual decline of bacterial load in subsequent generations to levels that cannot initiate disease. These studies explain the current successes in farms practising single diseased plant removal instead of whole mat rouging, and gives hope to farmers lacking access to clean planting material.  相似文献

Mast cell tumors are among the most commonly seen tumors of the skin in dogs and are more highly aggressive than mast cell tumors of other species. Some breeds display a markedly higher incidence of mast cell tumor development than others and appear to have some genetic predisposition. Recently, mutations have been found in canine mast cell tumor tissues and cell lines within the juxtamembrane domain of the protooncogene c-KIT In previous studies utilizing a small number of cases, no association between the presence of a mutation and the breed of dog or grade of the tumor could be identified. An expanded study with a larger sample set was performed to explore this possibility. The juxtamembrane domain of c-KIT was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction from genomic DNA preparations of 88 paraffin-embedded mast cell tumors from selected breeds. Mutations, consisting of duplications and deletions, were found in 12 of the tumors. A significant association was found between the presence of a mutation and a higher grade of tumor but not between breed and grade or between breed and the presence of a mutation.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There has been no objectively assessed case-control study of the efficacy of surgery to correct dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) previously reported. HYPOTHESIS: Composite surgery has a beneficial result on racing performance in horses affected with DDSP as compared to a matched control population. METHODS: Race records were obtained for 53 racing Thoroughbreds which underwent composite staphylectomy, sternothyrohyoideus myectomy and ventriculectomy for correction of idiopathic DDSP at the University of Bristol between 1990 and 1996. Each surgical case was matched for age, sex and training yard with 2 control horses. The racing performance, based on prize money won, of surgical cases and control horses were compared for 3 races run before and after the date of surgery. RESULTS: Ninety-two percent of the surgical cases returned to racing after surgery. There was a significant increase in earnings of the surgical group before and after surgery (P = 0.011), but there was no significant difference in earnings of the control group before and after the date of surgery (P = 0335). Sixty percent of the surgical group had higher earnings after surgery than before, compared to 40% of controls. When horses which underwent surgery were ranked relative to their 2 matched controls, surgical cases did not significantly change in rank (P = 033), whereas control horses significantly decreased in rank (P = 0.012). Additionally, horses within the surgical group were more likely (P < 0.01) to start in 3 post operative races than those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS AND POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Composite surgery had a beneficial effect on racing performance of horses afflicted with idiopathic DDSP, and further studies to evaluate objectively the usefulness of other surgical techniques are warranted.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Isolates of the late blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans (n = 327) from the central to southern Peruvian Andes were systematically collected in 1997 to 1999 and analyzed to determine the pathogen's population structure at its host's center of diversity. No isolates of the A2 mating type were detected. Cluster analysis of DNA fingerprinting data indicated that the collection consisted of five major groups that were interpreted to be clonal lineages. Two of the lineages (US-1 and EC-1) have been previously described, and three (PE-3, 5, and 6) are described here for the first time. Collections from three areas in the central Peruvian Andes, including two key sites used in an international potato breeding program, consisted of isolates of the EC-1 lineage, which has been reported to dominate the pathogen population in Andean countries to the north of Peru. The collections from Cusco and Puno were more diverse. More than one lineage was detected in 10 of the 20 fields sampled in Cusco. Data on virulence, metalaxyl sensitivity, and band data for allozymes, mitochondrial DNA, and ipiB1 suggested that PE-3 may have been produced through recombination events between US-1 and EC-1. Restriction fragment length polymorphism and amplified fragment length polymorphism marker data were not consistent with this hypothesis.  相似文献

The pea root rot complex is a major concern for green pea production worldwide. This study aimed at characterizing its composition and dynamics throughout a cropping season in northern France. To this end, fungi and oomycetes were isolated from green pea plant roots with symptoms sampled at the flowering stage in 22 fields in 2017, and at the pea emergence, elongation and flowering stages in two fields in 2018. Out of 646 isolates collected, 317 were identified using molecular markers. Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani and F. redolens were highly predominant. Pathogenicity tests separated the isolates into four aggressiveness groups. F. solani isolates were the most aggressive. Phylogenetic analysis of their TEF1 sequences showed that they mainly belonged to the F. pisi lineage, and that F. oxysporum isolates were genetically close to isolates from the UK that did not belong to the forma specialis pisi. In addition, several Clonostachys rhizophaga isolates are reported for the first time to cause pea root rot. The oomycetes were rarely found and were represented by a few Pythium spp. isolates. Lastly, this study shows that the fungal and oomycete communities associated with pea root rot change during the cropping season. The level of dissimilarity of the root-rot-associated communities decreased throughout the cropping season towards a more similar composition at the flowering stage, dominated by F. solani, F. oxysporum and F. redolens. The proportion of nonpathogenic to weakly pathogenic isolates decreased progressively during the growing season in favour of moderately to highly pathogenic isolates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Population level diversity at the Ustilago maydis b mating type locus was determined in samples from four Minnesota locations using a combination of plate mating techniques and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay. The PCR method allows rapid identification of b types from samples of natural populations and utilizes the hypervariable regions of the b locus that determine mating type specificity. Results demonstrated high levels of b diversity within populations, with one population yielding 17 of the total 18 b types found in the study. Pairwise G(ST) values were in the range of 0.02 to 0.05, and common b mating types were found across broad geographic distances. These data demonstrated that very low levels of differentiation among U. maydis populations occur with respect to b locus variation. Consistent with frequency-dependent selection models, b types were represented at approximately equal frequencies within the entire Minnesota population. However, neutral evolutionary models for patterns of geographic distribution and variation at b cannot be entirely excluded. The importance to agricultural practices of understanding population genetic processes is discussed.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships within the suborder Trypanosomatina were inferred from the kinetoplast DNA minicircle conserved region sequences. Trees built using distance-matrix (Neighbor-Joining) and maximum parsimony methods showed that the minicircle conserved regions (CRs) provide a sensitive and specific molecular marker suitable for phylogenetic analyses of subspecies and strains of trypanosomatid flagellates, as testified by the subdivision of the genus Leishmania into the subgenera Leishmania. Viannia and Sauroleishmania. However, since Phytomonas and monogenetic parasites of insects represent the earliest diverging groups, the CRs do not seem to be useful for inference of relationships among major lineages of the order Kinetoplastida.  相似文献

Three experiments have been conducted to study the effect of virginiamycin in young grazing-bulls (Experiment 1) and heifers (Experiments 2 and 3). Rotational grazing on permanent grassland was practised and animals were supplemented with 1 kg dried sugarbeet pulp per head daily. Control groups did not receive virginiamycin via the supplement, while it was incorporated at 120, 300 and 200 mg kg−1 for the treatment groups in Experiments 1 to 3 respectively.
Average daily liveweight gain was significantly increased from 0·59 to 0·72 kg in Experiment 1 and from 0·73 to 0·81 kg in Experiment 3, but was not affected in Experiment 2 (0·51 vs 0·55 kg). Virginiamycin also increased liveweight gain per ha by 12, 7 and 13%, respectively, for the three experiments. Grazed area per animal was not enlarged to the same extent as the calculated daily energy allowances, which may suggest an improved digestibility and/or rumen fermentation.  相似文献
