The effect of different organic composts on the suppression of wilt disease of spinach caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. spinaciae was evaluated in a continuous cropping system in both containers and in microplot field trials. Test soils infested with the pathogen were amended with wheatbran, wheatbran and sawdust, coffee grounds, chicken manure, or mixture of different composts with and without 5% (w/w) crab shell powder either once (5%, w/w) or continuously (2.5%) into the test soils infested with the pathogen. In the container trials, the soil amended with composts became suppressive to disease development on the second and third cropping. The suppressive effect was notable in the soil amended with the mixture of compost with and without crab shell powder. The coffee compost lowered soil pH but became suppressive to the disease after modifying the soil pH. In the field trial using the mixture of the different composts containing 5% crab shell powder, a combination of 5% before the first cropping and 2.5% every second cropping gave stable disease control and promoted plant growth. After compost amendment, populations of fungi, bacteria and actinomycetes as measured by dilution plate counting and the total microbial activity as evaluated by fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis increased and population of the pathogen gradually decreased. These phenomena were especially notable in soils amended with the mixture of different composts. These results indicate that diversity in the organic materials promotes higher microbial activity and population in the soil thereby enhancing disease suppressiveness.  相似文献

Cultivation of a teak crop in acid soils needs adequate agronomic management of these characteristics of high acidity and low nutrient supply to obtain high yields in wood. This work evaluated the effect of liming and application of boron in teak plants during early stage of growth in acid soils from Córdoba, Colombia. The experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and soils laboratory of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences by using acid soil limed with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and fertilized with boron. The treatments were chosen according to the Box Bernard augmented matrix 3, with dosages of Ca(OH)2 from 300 to 5700 kg ha?1 and boron from 0.3 to 5.225 kg ha?1, using three repetitions per treatment. Data obtained on boron in the soils (Bs) and in the plant (Bp), foliar area (AF), leaf dry mass (MSH), and roots (MSR) were analyzed through means tests and regressions from response surfaces (p ≤ 0.05). The results indicated increased pH and in the soil’s exchangeable calcium (Ca). To reach the maximal AF, the dosages of 2.26 kg ha?1 of boron (B) and 4522.6 kg ha?1 of Ca(OH)2 were estimated; for MSH, stem, and roots boron, dosages ranged between 2.02 and 5.225, with the dosage of 5700 kg ha?1 of Ca(OH)2 in all the variables evaluated. Application of calcium hydroxide also showed positive effect in leaf, stem, and MSR gain of teak seedlings during early growth stages. Fertilization with boron (B) did not show significant effect upon growth of dry masses of the parts evaluated.  相似文献

Cats are important in the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection because they are the only hosts that can excrete the environmentally-resistant oocysts. In the present study, prevalence of T. gondii was determined in serum, feces, and tissues of 170 unwanted cats from Colombia, South America. Antibodies to T. gondii were assayed by the modified agglutination test and found in 77 of 170 (45.2%) cats with titers of <1:5 in 93, 1:5 in eight, 1:10 in 17, 1:20 in 10, 1:40 in seven, 1:80 in four, 1:160 in eight, 1:320 in six, and 1:640 or higher in 17 cats. T. gondii oocysts were not found in feces of any cat as ascertained by bioassay in mice. Tissues (brain, heart, tongue) of 116 cats were bioassayed in mice or cats. T. gondii was isolated from tissues of 15 of the 42 cats with titers of 1:40 or higher and not from any of the 90 cats titers of 1:20 or lower. Of the 29 cats whose tissues were bioassayed individually, T. gondii was isolated from the tongues of nine, hearts of eight, and brains of five. Mice inoculated with tissues of 12 of 15 infected cats died of toxoplasmosis; with nine T. gondii isolates all infected mice died. Overall, 65 of 92 (70%) of T. gondii-infected mice died of toxoplasmosis. Genotyping of these 15 isolates using polymorphisms at the SAG1, SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, and GRA6 loci revealed that three isolates (TgCtCo1, 2, and 7) had Type I alleles and one isolate (TgCtCo8) had Type II allele at all five loci. Eleven isolates contained the combination of Type I and III alleles and were divided into three genotypes, with TgCtCo3,5,6,9,12,13 and 15 had alleles I, I, III, I and III, TgCtCo4,10,11 had alleles I, III, III, I and I, and TgCtCo14 had alleles I, III, III, III, and III, at loci SAG1, SAG2, SAG3, BTUB and GRA6, respectively. All infected mice from each group had identical genotype except one mouse infected with TgCtCo5 had a Type III allele at locus BTUB and a unique allele (u-1) at locus SAG1 indicating mixed infection for TgCtCo5, whereas the rest seven mice had a Type I alleles at both loci.  相似文献

The main physical and chemical properties of a composted mixture of sewage sludge and wood chips, the nonamended soil, and soils amended with two rates of the compost, in the presence or absence of barley, were determined. Humic acids (HAs) isolated from these materials were characterized by various methods including elemental analysis and Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR), fluorescence, and electron spin resonance spectroscopies. With respect to the nonamended soil HA, the compost HA was characterized by a prevalent aliphatic character, low oxygenated functional group content, high contents of S, N-containing groups and polysaccharide components, low free radical concentration, high molecular heterogeneity, and low degrees of ring polycondensation, polymerization and humification. Compost application at the low rate appeared to induce only limited modifications in the structural and chemical properties of HAs from amended soils, whereas apparent modifications of HA properties occurred where a high amendment rate was used. The absence or presence of barley cultivation appeared not to exert any measurable effect on the composition and properties of compost-amended soil HAs.  相似文献

Red wine amino acids and volatile compounds were analyzed before and after malolactic fermentation carried out by four different starter cultures of the species Oenococcus oeni and Lactobacillus plantarum. The purpose of this study was to determine whether differences can be attributed to the lactic acid bacteria strain used in this important step of the wine-making process. The malolactic cultures selected for this study were indigenous wine lactic acid bacteria strains. The data were evaluated using different multivariate analysis techniques. Results showed different malolactic behaviors for O. oeni and L. plantarum and significant metabolic differences between both species. A degree of diversity was found within each lactic acid bacteria group, since wines presented specific characteristics depending on the lactic acid bacteria strain used. In all cases, malolactic fermentation seemed to modify the amino acid and volatile composition of the wine.  相似文献

Threadfin shad Dorosoma petenense are often stocked into commercial catfish ponds for biological control of algae. It is thought that the fish will alter the phytoplankton community, improve water quality, and enhance channel catfish production. Co-stocking of shad and catfish is a common practice, although there is limited information regarding the effects of threadfin shad on pond dynamics and catfish production. To evaluate the influence of shad in catfish ponds, this study was conducted in ten 0.04-ha experimental earthen ponds near Auburn, Alabama. All ponds were stocked in April with 600 fingerling channel catfish Ictal-urus punctatus (13,200/ha) with a mean length of 10.4 cm (4.1 in). Additionally, five of these ponds were randomly chosen and stocked with 70 adult threadfin shad (1,750/ha) weighing a total of 3.3 kg (16.5 kg/ha). At harvest in November, an average of 1,284 threadfin shad (32,100/ha), weighing a total of 55 kg (1,375 kg/ha) were collected from each shad pond. Water quality was improved with the addition of threadfin shad to channel catfish ponds. Mean total ammonia-nitrogen was significantly lower and less variable in the shad treatment. Observed mean nitrite concentrations, though not significant, were lower in the shad treatment. The phytoplankton community of the shad treatment had significantly higher density, more taxa, and smaller organisms. Pond water in the shad treatment had higher projected early morning dissolved oxygen levels requiring less aeration. Channel catfish had significantly higher survival in the shad treatment, furthermore, though not statistically significant, observed mean fish production was higher and feed conversion ratio was lower than in the no-shad treatment.  相似文献
