Drought and heat-induced forest dieback and mortality are emerging global concerns. Although Mediterranean-type forest (MTF) ecosystems are considered to be resilient to drought and other disturbances, we observed a sudden and unprecedented forest collapse in a MTF in Western Australia corresponding with record dry and heat conditions in 2010/2011. An aerial survey and subsequent field investigation were undertaken to examine: the incidence and severity of canopy dieback and stem mortality, associations between canopy health and stand-related factors as well as tree species response. Canopy mortality was found to be concentrated in distinct patches, representing 1.5 % of the aerial sample (1,350 ha). Within these patches, 74 % of all measured stems (>1 cm DBHOB) had dying or recently killed crowns, leading to 26 % stem mortality six months following the collapse. Patches of canopy collapse were more densely stocked with the dominant species, Eucalyptus marginata, and lacked the prominent midstorey species Banksia grandis, compared to the surrounding forest. A differential response to the disturbance was observed among co-occurring tree species, which suggests contrasting strategies for coping with extreme water stress. These results suggest that MTFs, once thought to be resilient to climate change, are susceptible to sudden and severe forest collapse when key thresholds have been reached. 相似文献

Winter wheat producers in Oklahoma often combine an insecticide with a top-dress application of nitrogen during late fall and winter to control existing greenbug populations. We evaluated the efficacy of three classes of insecticides applied in cold weather field conditions ranging from −13.3 to 28.9 °C from 2002 to 2004 for greenbug control in winter wheat in replicated small plots. Insecticides provided control ranging from 0% to 98%, but generally responded similarly to temperature. Percent control of greenbugs resulting from applications of dimethoate, chlorpyrifos and λ-cyhalothrin was correlated with maximum, minimum and average daily temperatures that occurred two days post-treatment. While percent control was unique for each insecticide, a combined regression of percent control against average daily temperature predicted that a 95% level of control would be achieved when post-treatment temperatures exceeded 13.6 °C. Rainfall that occurred post-treatment affected the efficacy of dimethoate but did not affect the other insecticides. Insecticide persistence was extended under cooler temperatures, allowing acceptable control 14 days post-treatment if temperatures warmed. The decision to apply insecticides should be made based on existing treatment thresholds for greenbug, but if treatment with an insecticide is warranted, winter wheat producers can expect reasonable control of greenbugs from insecticides applied during the winter, as long as post-treatment temperatures exceed 13 °C within the following 14 days. 相似文献

Danofloxacin, a novel fluoroquinolone antimicrobial drug was evaluated in the treatment of acute bacterial pneumonia in recently housed beef cattle of approximately 300 kg liveweight. The clinical responses of 67 pneumonic cattle treated with danofloxacin were compared with those of 65 cattle treated with oxytetracycline, both treatments being given by intramuscular injection for either three or five days, depending on clinical response. Both treatments resulted in a rapid fall in group mean rectal temperature and improved the clinical condition of the majority of cases. However, in comparison with oxytetracycline, danofloxacin therapy was characterised by significantly fewer treatment days, a higher response rate, significantly better reduction of pyrexia and fewer cattle requiring re-treatment. 相似文献

For decades researchers have been targeting prevention of Rhodococcus equi (Rhodococcus hoagui/Prescottella equi) by vaccination and the horse breeding industry has supported the ongoing efforts by researchers to develop a safe and cost effective vaccine to prevent disease in foals. Traditional vaccines including live, killed and attenuated (physical and chemical) vaccines have proved to be ineffective and more modern molecular‐based vaccines including the DNA plasmid, genetically attenuated and subunit vaccines have provided inadequate protection of foals. Newer, bacterial vector vaccines have recently shown promise for R. equi in the mouse model. This article describes the findings of key research in R. equi vaccine development and looks at alternative methods that may potentially be utilised. 相似文献
