Ambient concentrations of particulate Fe, Zn, Ph, Ni, Cr, Cd and Hg were measured at nine sites located in the metropolitan area of Detroit from 1971 to 1992. The ambient concentrations of all the trace metals were found to be generally higher at industrial and commercial sites. The concentrations show significant variations between residential and commercial areas and between residential and industrial areas; however, no significant variation was found between the industrial and commercial settings. The spatial variation of trace metal levels within the urban area was influenced by the frequency distribution of the wind direction as well as type and location of emission sources. The ambient concentrations of the trace metals during the decade of 1971–1981 declined by 37–88%. In the 1980s many of the trace metals reversed this trend with the exception of Fe and Pb which continued to decline at annual rates of 2% and 9.8%, respectively. The sharp decrease in Pb concentrations during the 1980s, reflected the significant reduction of Pb content in gasoline from 0.28 g/liter in the 1982 to 0.026 g/liter in the 1989. The ambient concentrations of Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd and Hg showed an upward trend during the 1980s with an annual rate in the range of 0.6% to 10.6%. The long-term trends of selected U.S. market parameters, analyzed as potential long-term indicators of emission sources activityies, were consistent with the changes of ambient concentrations, the correlation coefficient being in the range of 0.58 to 0.84 for most of the trace metals.  相似文献

In an effort to provide a better understanding of the sources of petroleum hydrocarbons in urban runoff, petroleum products as well as probable source materials were analyzed for hydrocarbons and trace metals and then compared to urban runoff samples from four different land use areas. The petroleum products considered were No. 2 and No. 6 fuel oils, used and virgin crankcase oils, and gasoline. Source materials included street dust, roadside soil, roadside vegetation, and atmospheric fallout; and the land use categories were commercial, residential, interstate highway, and industrial areas. The samples were compared on the basis of hydrocarbon (saturated and aromatic) and trace metal (Cd, Pb, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn) loadings and distributions. Results indicated that the hydrocarbon content in runoff at all four land use sites originated primarily from used crankcase oil, with a small amount of No. 2 fuel oil detected at the industrial site. Only a small portion of the crankcase oil component came from the sources surveyed, and the majority of this oil probably came from: (1) oil drops within the driving lanes on the road surfaces or deposits in parking areas, and/or (2) direct dumping of waste crankcase oil down storm drains.  相似文献

Polyphenolic compounds in cranberries have been investigated to determine their role in protection against cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Extracts of whole fruit were assayed for radical-scavenging activity and tumor growth inhibition using seven tumor cell lines. Selective inhibition of K562 and HT-29 cells was observed from a methanolic extract in the range of 16-125 microg/mL. Radical-scavenging activity was greatest in an extract composed primarily of flavonol glycosides. Seven flavonol glycosides were isolated and purified from whole fruit for further evaluation; the anthocyanin cyanidin 3-galactoside was also purified for comparison with the flavonoids. Three flavonol monoglycosides were newly identified by (13)C NMR as myricetin 3-alpha-arabinofuranoside, quercetin 3-xyloside, and 3-methoxyquercetin 3-beta-galactoside (isorhamnetin); the other four isolated were the previously identified myricetin 3-beta-galactoside, quercetin 3-beta-galactoside, quercetin 3-alpha-arabinofuranoside, and quercetin 3-alpha-rhamnopyranoside. These compounds were evaluated for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activity and ability to inhibit low-density lipoprotein oxidation in vitro. Most of the flavonol glycosides showed antioxidant activity comparable or superior to that of vitamin E; cyanidin 3-galactoside showed activity superior to that of the flavonoids as well as vitamin E or Trolox in both antioxidant assays.  相似文献

Bioactivity-guided fractionation of cranberry fruit was used to determine the identity of triterpenoid esters from Vaccinium macrocarpon, which inhibit tumor cell growth and may play a role in cancer prevention. In our previous study, a fraction from whole fruit exhibited tumor cell growth inhibition in vitro. The major components of this fraction were isolated by chromatographic separation of ethyl acetate extracts, purified by semipreparative HPLC, and identified by NMR as cis- (1) and trans- (2) isomers of 3-O-p-hydroxycinnamoyl ursolic acid. These triterpenoid esters have not been previously reported in Vaccinium fruit. Bioassay of the purified triterpene cinnamates in tumor cell lines in vitro showed slightly greater activity of compound 1 in most cell lines, with GI(50) values of approximately 20 microM in MCF-7 breast, ME180 cervical and PC3 prostate tumor cell lines. Quercetin was slightly less active than 1, while cyanidin-3-galactoside exhibited much lower cytotoxicity, with GI(50) greater than 250 microM in all cell lines. Phenylboronic acid (3) was also isolated from the fruit but showed insignificant antitumor activity.  相似文献

The effects of several environmental factors on the dissipation, transformation, and mineralization of isoxaflutole were investigated in laboratory incubations. In the soil, isoxaflutole hydrolyzed to a diketonitrile derivative, which is the active form of the herbicide. The diketonitrile was then metabolized to an inactive benzoic acid derivative and later into two unknown products, which were found only in small quantities. Degradation of isoxaflutole was faster in soil maintained at -100 or -1500 kPa compared to that in air-dry soil. At 25 degrees C, the half-lives for isoxaflutole were 9.6, 2.4, and 1.5 days in air-dry, -1500 kPa, and -100 kPa moisture regimes, respectively. A simple Arrhenius expression described the response of isoxaflutole transformation (mineralization and transformation) to temperature in the range of 5 to 35 degrees C. An activation energy value (E(a)) of 67 kJ/mol for isoxaflutole suggested the transformation of the herbicide to the diketonitrile derivative was primarily a chemical reaction. Moreover, biological activity had little effect on the hydrolysis of isoxaflutole, with half-lives of 1.8 and 1.4 days in sterile and nonsterile soil, respectively. However, the transformation of diketonitrile to benzoic acid and the production of the unknown products were greatly reduced in the sterile soil, suggesting one or more biologically mediated processes.  相似文献

Comparisons among 4 peatland sites representing a gradient of increasing Fe, Al, Mn, and S loading revealed significant accumulation of total Fe, Al, and S, but not Mn, in surface (0 to 20 cm deep) peat along the gradient. Iron and Al accumulation were contributed mainly by organically bound fractions, with oxides contributing to a lesser extent. Although SO4 2? and Fe sulfides showed significant increases in concentration along the gradient, most of the accumulation of total S was contributed by organic, rather than inorganic S. Laboratory studies of Fe2+ adsorption by peat indicated that increasing the pH of added Fe2+ solutions (pH values of 3, 4, 5, and 6) did not significantly affect Langmuir equation estimates of either maximum Fe2+ adsorption capacity or the affinity of peat for Fe2+. Regardless of the pH of the added Fe2+ solutions, final solution pH values were relatively uniform, averaging about 3.4, reflecting a considerable bufferring capacity of Sphagnum peat. Factors affecting the accumulation of metals and S in peat remain topics for further investigation.  相似文献

Abstract: As the most populous country on earth with 10 per cent of its rare species of flora and fauna, China's environmental practice is of great importance. Already the country is one of the most polluted places in the world. At least seven out of the ten of the world's most polluted cities are located in China. It is the second largest producer of greenhouse gases after the United States, inflicting heavy, long‐term casualties on its own public health and economic development as well as on those of its close neighbours in the Asia‐Pacific region. How to strike a proper balance between environmental protection and fast economic growth will have an important impact on China's modernisation outcome and its international standing. The country began to pay serious attention to environment problems in the 1970s. Since the adoption of the reform and opening‐up policy in the late 1970s, it has signed or ratified many international treaties dealing with environmental issues. By now, it has entered into most international environmental regimes. But how compliant is China with respect to commitments made to these regimes? How willing and capable is it in complying with international environmental norms and rules? What does sustainable development mean to China? How do red tape, fear, inexperience, and ignorance affect China's efforts to protect its environment? And how do inter‐ministerial wrangling and the growth of green NGOs within China affect its compliance? This paper tries to answer these questions.  相似文献

While in recent years much has been written, and even more spoken, about the interrelationships between population and development, and particularly the importance of acknowledging population parameters in development planning and policy formulation, reality in most Pacific island countries and territories falls short of this rhetoric. Long-term development plans and strategic development frameworks are still compiled without due consideration of demographic circumstances, and economic and public sector reform proceeds in many countries seemingly oblivious of contemporary population dynamics. It is not always lack of basic and timely data that accounts for this malaise, as is evident from a myriad of demographic indicators reported by a variety of government agencies and regional and international organisations. However, these often manage to portray quite different demographic scenarios using identical data sources. This paper examines the institutional and methodological context within which Pacific island population data are collected and demographic information is produced. It concludes by discussing ways in which demography and demographers can contribute towards more realistic planning and policymaking in the Pacific.  相似文献

Summary Six wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum) accessions, from a diverse range of habitats, and two spring-cultivated barleys, were examined for variation in durations of development phases. The durations of the leaf initiation and spikelet initiation phases were longer and spikelet growth phases shorter, in wild than in cultivated barley. Across all wild and cultivated barleys the rate and duration of spikelet initiation were negatively correlated, but neither was related to the number of spikelets per spike. The number of spikelets was positively correlated with the number of leaves and the ratio of the number of spikelets to the number of leaves declined with increasing time to anthesis, indicating that each successive leaf was associated with a diminishing increase in the number of spikelets. The duration of culm elongation and final culm length were shorter in accessions of cultivated barley compared with wild barley. Degassing tests were conducted by using plunges, screens and columns packed with Glitch Ballast rings (1·58, 2·54 and 3·81 cm outside diameter), Tri-pac spheres (4·6 cm outside diameter), or Olin 12-gauge shotcups. Plunges and screens provided biologically inadequate degassing when hyperbaric pressure (ΔP) exceeded about 50 mm Hg (about 106% barometric pressure). Ballast rings of 2·54 cm size proved more effective than the other sizes or the Tri-pac spheres or shotcups. The effluent gas levels were a function of incoming level of supersaturation, column height, packing type and size, water flow rate and flow rate per cm2 column. We concluded that packed columns can generally produce biologically acceptable levels of dissolved gases (ΔP ? 15 mm Hg) when they are adequately designed, properly operated and regularly monitored. However, a single-pass column may not be adequate to protect ultra-sensitive species or life stages of fish and other organisms in shallow water.  相似文献
