The methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of the aerial parts of Cirsium tenoreanum, have been evaluated for their phytochemical constituents and antibacterial and cytotoxic properties. Light competition by trees is often regarded as a major limiting factor for crops in alley-cropping agroforestry. Northern latitude farmers are usually reluctant to adopt agroforestry as they fear that light competition will be fiercer in their conditions. We questioned the light availability for crops in alley-cropping at different latitudes from the tropic circle to the polar circle with a process-based 3D model of alley-cropping agroforestry. Two tree densities and two tree line orientations were considered. The effect of the latitude was evaluated with same-sized trees. The relative irradiance of the crops was computed for the whole year or at specific times of the year when crops need more light. The heterogeneity of crop irradiance across the alley was also computed. Surprisingly, crop relative irradiance of summer crops at high latitudes is high, at odds with farmers’ fears. Best designs were highlighted for improving the crop irradiance: North–South tree lines are recommended at high latitudes and East–West tree lines at low latitudes. At medium latitudes, North–South tree lines should be preferred to achieve an homogeneous irradiance of the crop in the alley. If we assume that trees at northern latitudes grow slower when compared to southern latitudes, then alley-cropping agroforestry is highly advisable even at high latitudes with summer crops. 相似文献

In 1996, intensive building operations near the botanical garden of Padova, the oldest botanical garden in the world, altered a long-established equilibrium between groundwater and plants and threatened the lives of some of them. To avoid water stress, an advanced irrigation system was installed. For design purposes, better knowledge of the water cycle and the monthly average evapotranspiration (ET) in the area was needed. Due to the complex canopy stand of the site, ET was estimated using the water balance method, integrating mathematical models with the Arc/Info Geographical Information System. The water balance was estimated in 1997 and 1998, and results were used to derive an empirical mean crop coefficient of the botanical garden, to simulate the long-term water requirements using the product of reference ET and the apparent crop coefficient to estimate ET from the garden. Two types of hydrological behaviour were identified: one in the central area of the garden, where reduced ground cover diminishes ET and increases runoff and percolation. In the external area, the ET was higher because of the presence of many trees. The empirical mean monthly crop coefficient ranged between 0.56 and 0.83, indicating that ET in the entire area is always less than grass reference ET. 相似文献

Basal hexapodan orders (Apterygota) are traditionally divided in two well defined taxonomic groups, Entognatha and Ectognatha. Entognathy (the enclosed mouthparts condition) is considered the most distinctive character joining the Ellipura (Protura+ Collembola) with the order Diplura, whereas the presence of exposed mouthparts (ectognathy) is the feature shared by Microcoryphia and Zygentoma with the pterygote insects. In spite of the growing interest for the evolutionary history of the Apterygota, there is no complete agreement among the general phylogenetic hypotheses based on the study of morphological characters. In this study we analyzed the DNA sequence of segments of the nuclear Elongation Factor-1α(EF-1α) and of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA genes, and used different methods of phylogenetic reconstruction. The 12S gene seems to be more suited than the EF-1α to resolve some of the most outstanding systematic disputes, whereas the lack of resolution at the deeper nodes does not allow to assess the phylogenetic relationships within Microcoryphia and between ectognathan orders. We have obtained a fairly high support for the monophyly of the orders Diplura and Zygentoma. In the 12S analysis, the Ellipura and the Entognatha form monophyletic assemblages. In addition, the study of the distribution of introns in the EF-1α suggests a relationship between Collembola and Diplura. 相似文献

The Sicilian grape cultivar ‘Nero d’Avola’ is among the oldest and most cultivated in the island, taking part in the production
of several red wines exported worldwide, including DOC wines (Etna Rosso and Cerasuolo di Vittoria). Due to the ancient origin
and repeated clonally propagation of the cultivar, phenotypic variability has been observed. Clone identification in this
important cultivar has so far relied on phenotypic and chemical traits analyses, often affected by environmental conditions.
Genetic markers, such as microsatellites, are particularly useful for cultivar identification, parentage testing, pedigree
reconstruction and population structure studies. In the present paper, microsatellites were used to analyze the intra-varietal
genetic diversity among 118 plants of ‘Nero d’Avola’, collected in 30 vineyards displaced in different areas of Sicily. Out
of 22 microsatellites, 11 showed polymorphism among samples and 15 different phylogenetic groups were identified. Results
show that ‘Nero d’Avola’ actually comprises different genetic profiles, although most of clones share a common origin. 相似文献

In Sicily and in the small surrounding islands the section Brassica of the genus Brassica comprises five species, B. insularis Moris, B. incana Ten., B. macrocarpa Guss., B. rupestris Raf. and B. villosa Biv. These taxa represent a genetic resource as relatives of kale crops but some populations are endangered or threatened, thus isozyme analyses were performed to assess the genetic diversity degree at population and species levels in order to assist the design of conservation management programs.Eleven loci from five enzyme systems (aconitase, leucine aminopeptidase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucoisomerase phosphoglucomutase) were analyzed in sixteen natural population (fifteen from Sicily, one from Calabria). Mean within-population genetic diversity was moderate (P = 41%, A = 1.54, H = 0.16). In some cases a great number of heterozygous individuals were detected, in other cases fixation index (F) deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg genotypic expectations.A total of 37 alleles was recognized, six of which resulted exclusive to single populations. The among-population component of the total genetic diversity (Gst mean values) for each species was 0.30–0.37, indicating genetic differentiation among populations.Among B. villosa and B. rupestris populations genetic distance values resulted rather low and they resulted high with B. incana and B. macrocarpa populations.The results are discussed with regard to the distribution of the genetic diversity level and the genetic resources management. 相似文献

Hunting and habitat degradation are universal threats to primates across the tropics, thus deciphering the relative impact of threats on population relative abundance is critical to predicting extinction risk and providing conservation recommendations. We studied diurnal primates over a period of nearly 6 years in the Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania, a site of global importance for primate conservation. We assessed how population relative abundance of five species (of which two are endemic and IUCN-Endangered) differed between two forest blocks that are similar in size and habitat types but contrast strongly in protection level, and how abundance changed during 2004–2009. We also measured habitat and disturbance parameters and, in the unprotected forest, evaluated hunting practices. We found significant differences in primates’ abundance between protected and unprotected forests, with the greater contrast being the lower abundance of colobine monkeys (Udzungwa red colobus and Angolan colobus) in the unprotected forest. At this site moreover, colobines declined to near-extinction over the study period. In contrast, two cercopithecines (Sanje mangabey and Sykes’ monkey) showed slightly higher abundance in the unprotected forest and did not decline significantly. We argue that escalating hunting in the unprotected forest has specifically impacted the canopy-dwelling colobus monkeys, although habitat degradation may also have reduced their abundance. In contrast, cercopithecines did not seem affected by the current hunting, and their greater ecological adaptability may explain the relatively higher abundance in the unprotected forest. A UV exclusion experiment was conducted on durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf. var. Claudio) grown in pots. Plants were grown under three different radiative treatments in greenhouses covered with plastic filters: Teflon, transparent to the entire region of natural UV‐visible sunlight (TEF); polyester, transparent above 312 nm (MYL, excluding UVB) and Lee, transparent above 400 nm (LEE, excluding both UVA and UVB). Analyses have been carried out to determine the concentration of photosynthetic pigments in leaves, UV‐absorbing compounds, nitrogen and carbon in leaves, culms and spikes and proteins and gluten in grains. In particular, plants grown under UV exclusion showed a reduction in protein and dry gluten content (consequently without variation in the ratio dry gluten/protein), but at the same time, a significant increase of gluten index, which is a parameter to define the quality of gluten, was observed. The results highlighted the influence played by UV radiation on some biochemical parameters, mainly UV‐absorbing compounds, leaf nitrogen and grain protein characteristics of durum wheat cultivated under Mediterranean conditions. In particular, natural level of UV in the Mediterranean improves the characteristics of durum wheat flour important for pasta production (high dry gluten level), while the UV exclusion could improve characteristics of flour important for bread production (high gluten index). 相似文献
