Mining activities generate spoils and effluents with extremely high metal concentrations of heavy metals that might have adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Therefore, information on soil and plant metal concentrations is needed to assess the severity of the pollution and develop a strategy for soil reclamation such as phytoremediation. Here, we studied soils and vegetation in three heavily contaminated sites with potential toxic metals and metalloids (Zn, Pb, Cd, As, TI) in the mining district of Les Malines in the Languedoc region (southern France). Extremely high concentrations were found at different places such as the Les Aviniéres tailing basins (up to 160,000 mg kg?C1 Zn, 90,000 mg kg?C1 Pb, 9,700 mg kg?C1 of As and 245 mg kg?C1 of Tl) near a former furnace. Metal contamination extended several kilometres away from the mine sites probably because of the transport of toxic mining residues by wind and water. Spontaneous vegetation growing on the three mine sites was highly diversified and included 116 plant species. The vegetation cover consisted of species also found in non-contaminated soils, some of which have been shown to be metal-tolerant ecotypes (Festuca arvernensis, Koeleria vallesiana and Armeria arenaria) and several Zn, Cd and Tl hyperaccumulators such as Anthyllis vulneraria, Thlaspi caerulescens, Iberis intermedia and Silene latifolia. This latter species was highlighted as a new thallium hyperaccumulator, accumulating nearly 1,500 mg kg?C1. These species represent a patrimonial interest for their potential use for the phytoremediation of toxic metal-polluted areas.  相似文献

By increasing resource availability, canopy opening enhances tree recruitment as well as the development of neighbouring vegetation. The proliferation of early successional and highly competitive vegetation may have dramatic consequences on seedling establishment. However, differences in competitive abilities have been shown among the plant growth forms commonly encountered in forests. We may thus expect that vegetation management leading to control of different plant growth forms would have different consequences on tree seedling growth and development. To test this hypothesis, we analysed the effects of an intensity gradient of four vegetation control treatments (untreated, coppice control, coppice and non-tree plant control, and coppice, non-tree and pioneer (tree) plant control) on plant species richness and natural tree regeneration in three post-storm sites. Higher plant species richness and a better natural tree regeneration were observed in the more intensive treatments that significantly improved the balance of the relative abundance of tree species. Suppressing the more competitive vegetation, mainly Rubus fruticosus and graminoids, led to the recruitment and growth of tree species sensitive to competition and good tree species diversity. Practical recommendations in terms of vegetation control relative to tree regeneration and plant species richness are given.  相似文献

Progressive states of maturing lentivirus: maedia visna virus (MVV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), respectively, have been visualized by 2-D electron microscopy and by 3-D electron microscopic tomography. A major fraction of MVV and a low percentage of HIV appear as immature particles 4 to 5 days post virus infection. Upon budding the gag-precursor material is densely packed inside the external envelope. After virus release the major portion of precursors is assembled within an approximately 25 nm thick layer directly attached to the envelope. Structural maturation of the core is different for the two viruses. Pleomorphic cores are observed in mature MVV in contrast to structurally defined cores of HIV. The latter are principally cone-shaped, spanning the entire diameter of the virion with a 40 to 60 nm wide free end and an approximately 20 nm narrow end attached to the envelope with a core-envelope-link.  相似文献

Genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects of acerola fruit at two stages of ripeness were investigated using mice blood cells. The results show that no ripeness stage of acerola extracts presented any genotoxic potential to damage DNA (Comet assay) or cytotoxicity (MTT assay). When antigenotoxic activity was analyzed, unripe fruit presented higher DNA protection than ripe fruit (red color) extract. The antioxidant capacity of substances also showed that unripe samples inhibit the free radical DPPH more significantly than the ripe ones. The results about determination of compounds made using HPLC showed that unripe acerola presents higher levels of vitamin C as compared to ripe acerola. Thus, vitamin C and the complex mixture of nutrients of Malpighia glabra L., and especially its ripeness stages, influenced the interaction of the fruit extract with the DNA. Acerola is usually consumed when ripe (red fruit), although it is the green fruit (unripe) that has higher potential as beneficial to DNA, protecting it against oxidative stress.  相似文献

Scrapie is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease of sheep and goats. It is also the earliest known member in the family of diseases classified as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) or prion diseases, which includes Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and chronic wasting disease in cervids. The recent revelation of naturally occurring BSE in a goat has brought the issue of TSE in goats to the attention of the public. In contrast to scrapie, BSE presents a proven risk to humans. The risk of goat BSE, however, is difficult to evaluate, as our knowledge of TSE in goats is limited. Natural caprine scrapie has been discovered throughout Europe, with reported cases generally being greatest in countries with the highest goat populations. As with sheep scrapie, susceptibility and incubation period duration of goat scrapie are most likely controlled by the prion protein (PrP) gene (PRNP). Like the PRNP of sheep, the caprine PRNP shows significantly greater variability than that of cattle and humans. Although PRNP variability in goats differs from that observed in sheep, the two species share several identical alleles. Moreover, while the ARR allele associated with enhancing resistance in sheep is not present in the goat PRNP, there is evidence for the existence of other PrP variants related to resistance. This review presents the current knowledge of the epidemiology of caprine scrapie within the major European goat populations, and compiles the current data on genetic variability of PRNP.  相似文献

The first chemical study of the Indo-Pacific dorid nudibranch Aldisa andersoni resulted in the isolation of five chlorinated phenyl-pyrrolyloxazoles belonging to the phorbazole series. Two new molecules, 9-chloro-phorbazole D and N1-methyl-phorbazole A, co-occurring with known phorbazoles A, B and D, have been characterized. Phorbazoles were found to be present mainly in the external part of the mollusc. The structures of the new compounds were determined by interpretation of spectroscopic data, mainly NMR and mass spectrometry and by comparison with the literature data. Evaluation of feeding-deterrence activity as well as in vitro growth inhibitory properties in human cancer cells was also carried out.  相似文献

Chitosanases, enzymes that catalyze the endo-hydrolysis of glycolytic links in chitosan, are the subject of numerous studies as biotechnological tools to generate low molecular weight chitosan (LMWC) or chitosan oligosaccharides (CHOS) from native, high molecular weight chitosan. Glycoside hydrolases belonging to family GH46 are among the best-studied chitosanases, with four crystallography-derived structures available and more than forty enzymes studied at the biochemical level. They were also subjected to numerous site-directed mutagenesis studies, unraveling the molecular mechanisms of hydrolysis. This review is focused on the taxonomic distribution of GH46 proteins, their multi-modular character, the structure-function relationships and their biological functions in the host organisms.  相似文献

The composition of tree rings and soils was studied at several locations affected by smelting and transportation in the vicinity of Kitwe (Copperbelt, Zambia). The contents of cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb) and the 206Pb/207Pb isotope ratios in the tree rings were interpreted in relation to potential sources of contamination such as smelter production, acidification of the environment, soil composition, raw material processing, and atmospheric suspended particulate matter (SPM). The highest Co contents in the tree rings correspond to maximum ore production in the mid-1970s. Acidification through SO2 emissions is documented in the increased Mn contents from the mid-1980s. The isotopic composition of the tree rings of the studied tree species varies in the interval 1.16?C1.34 and the youngest parts of all the studied trees exhibit a low 206Pb/207Pb ratio (<1.17). The soil isotope composition varies in the range 206Pb/207Pb?=?1.18?C1.35. The Pb isotope composition in the soils and tree rings was formed by a combination of lithogenic Pb (206Pb/207Pb????1.3), Pb in processed ores (206Pb/207Pb????1.2), and SPM (automobile) Pb (206Pb/207Pb??1.1). As the soils in the distant region have high 206Pb/207Pb ratios (>1.3) in the whole profile and simultaneously the youngest parts of the tree rings of tree species growing in this soil have a low 206Pb/207Pb ratio (<1.17), it can be assumed that the Pb in the youngest parts of the tree species is derived from absorption of SPM Pb through the bark rather than root uptake. The absence of Pb with a low 206Pb/207Pb ratio in soils in the distant area is probably affected by fires in the herbaceous and bush undergrowth and plant litter, which prevents Pb from biomass from entering the soil and mobilize it back into the atmosphere.  相似文献

The current study aimed to compare lindane degradation by pure and mixed cultures of Streptomyces sp. Cell-free extracts were assayed for potentiating dechlorinase activity and, based on these results, consortia of two to six microorganisms were assayed for their growth on and degradation of lindane. Furthermore, the role of bacterial consortia of lindane-degrading strains was examined in lindane decontamination soil assays. Four actinobacteria, previously isolated from a pesticide-contaminated area, were selected because of their tolerance to lindane and their ability to use the pesticide as sole carbon source. These strains as well as Streptomyces sp. M7 and Streptomyces coelicolor A3 were used to study specific dechlorinase activity (SDA) and lindane removal in mixed cultures. Pure cultures presented SDA in the presence of 1.66 mg L-1 lindane as carbon source. SDA was improved by certain mixed cultures until 12 times compared with pure cultures. Mixed cultures with two, three, and four strains showed maximum lindane removal of 46% to 68%, whereas combinations of five and six strains did not efficiently remove the pesticide from the culture medium. The Streptomyces sp. A2, A5, M7, and A11 consortium presented the lowest ratio between residual lindane concentration and SDA and could be a promising tool for lindane biodegradation.  相似文献
