Anecdotally, an unusually hyperechoic pancreas can be found in seemingly healthy dogs on ultrasound examination and the prevalence and clinical significance of this finding is unknown. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of a hyperechoic and/or heterogenous pancreas in healthy dogs and correlate these findings to weight, age, and body condition score (BCS). An additional objective was to describe the prevalence of a hyperechoic and/or heterogenous pancreas in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism and compare this to the healthy dogs. Pancreata of 74 healthy dogs were evaluated prospectively and pancreatic echogenicity and echotexture were graded. Each dog's age, BCS, and weight were recorded. Dogs were screened for health by physical examination, serum chemistry panel, urine specific gravity, and a canine pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity assay. Pancreatic images for 92 dogs having hyperadrenocorticism were also reviewed and pancreatic echogenicity and echotexture were recorded. The prevalence of pancreatic hyperechogenicity in normal dogs was 7% (5 of 74) and heterogeneity was 40% (30 of 74). No correlation existed between pancreatic echogenicity and weight, age, or BCS (P > 0.1 for all sets). A statistically significant increase in the proportion of dogs having a hyperechoic pancreas was found in the hyperadrenocorticism sample of dogs (40%, 37 of 92, P < 0.0001). The underlying cause of pancreatic variability in the few healthy dogs and in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism is unknown and the varying appearance of the pancreas in these samples confounds interpretation of diseases such as chronic pancreatitis.  相似文献

Background: Cycad palms are commonly used in landscaping and ingestion by dogs can cause disease or death. Objectives: Determine the morbidity and case fatality of cycad palm toxicosis in dogs from Louisiana, and examine putative prognostic factors. Animals: Thirty‐four client‐owned dogs with confirmed cycad palm toxicosis between 2003 and 2010. Methods: Retrospective cohort study. Search of all medical records for animals with cycad palm toxicosis. Results: Seventeen of 34 (50%) dogs died or were euthanized as a direct consequence of cycad intoxication. There were no differences in presenting signs and physical examination findings between survivors and nonsurvivors. Nonsurvivors had higher serum alanine transaminase activity (median 196 U/L; range 16–4,123 versus 113.5; 48–1,530) and total bilirubin concentration (0.5 mg/dL; 0.1–6.2 versus 0.25; 0–1.7) upon presentation, and their initial serum concentrations of albumin (2.9 g/dL; 1.4–4.1 versus 3.3; 2.2–3.9) were lower than those of survivors. Nadir serum albumin concentration was also lower in nonsurvivors (1.9; 1.4–3.7 versus 3.2; 1.8–3.5). A higher proportion of nonsurvivors had prolonged coagulation times, prothrombin time. and partial thromboplastin time. In a multivariate model, administration of charcoal at initial presentation was associated with longer survival (heart rate [HR] 0.019, 95% CI 0.001–0.644), while high serum aspartate aminotransferase activity was a negative prognostic factor (HR 118.2, 95% CI 2.89–4,826). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Cycad intoxication is associated with a higher case fatality than previously published. Several laboratory parameters might help differentiating potential nonsurvivors from survivors. Administration of charcoal as part of the emergency treatment appears to have a protective effect.  相似文献

A 5 year-old female Lhasa Apso was diagnosed with a large right pulmonary artery thrombus, multiple smaller pulmonary thrombi, and pulmonary hypertension. In addition, thoracic computed tomography angiography revealed numerous periesophageal arterial vessels, tortuous and dilated bronchial arteries, and an enlarged tortuous left phrenic artery, consistent with systemic bronchial and non-bronchial collateral arterial circulation development. These features of chronic pulmonary arterial thrombi have not been described in dogs but are recognized in people. One year after the diagnosis, the dog was still alive and there were no clinical signs reported.  相似文献

Objective-To determine the prevalence of perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (pANCA) in dogs with confirmed or suspected immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) or dogs infected with various vector-borne pathogens, including Rickettsia rickettsii, Bartonella henselae, Bartonella vinsonii subsp berkhoffii, Ehrlichia canis, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Leishmania infantum. Animals-55 dogs with confirmed or suspected IMHA, 140 dogs seroreactive for vector-borne pathogens, and 62 healthy dogs and dogs seronegative for vector-borne pathogens. Procedures-Samples were allocated to subgroups on the basis of the health status of the dogs and the degree of seroreactivity against various vector-borne pathogens. Serum samples were tested retrospectively via indirect immunofluorescence assay to determine pANCA status. Results-26 of 55 (47%) dogs with confirmed or suspected IMHA and 67 of 140 (48%) dogs seroreactive for vector-borne pathogens had positive results when tested for pANCA. Serum samples with the highest antibody concentrations against L infantum antigen had the highest proportion (28/43 [65%]) that were positive for pANCA. One of 20 (5%) dogs seronegative for tick-borne pathogens and 8 of 22 (36%) dogs seronegative for L infantum had positive results for pANCA. One of 20 (5%) healthy dogs had serum antibodies against pANCA. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-pANCA were detected in a high percentage of dogs with IMHA and vector-borne infectious diseases. Therefore, pANCA may be a relatively nonspecific marker for dogs with inflammatory bowel disease, although they could represent a biomarker for immune-mediated diseases and infections.  相似文献

We characterized gastric mucosal lesions in dogs with acute degenerative disc disease treated by surgery and corticosteroid administration. The effect of omeprazole and misoprostol on gastric lesions in these dogs was also evaluated. Dogs were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups or to the control group. Treatment consisted of omeprazole at 0.7 mg/kg orally once daily, or misoprostol at 2 microg/kg orally 3 times daily. All 3 groups received dexamethasone at 2 mg/kg on day 0, prednisolone at 2 mg/kg on day 1. prednisolone at 1 mg/kg on day 2, and prednisolone at 0.5 mg/kg on all further days (range, 5-6 days). Endoscopic examination was performed on day 0 and 5-6 days later. Four regions of the stomach were qualitatively scored from 1 to 12 based on the presence of submucosal hemorrhage, erosion, or ulceration, with ulceration receiving the highest numerical score. Nineteen of 25 dogs had gastric mucosal lesions at the beginning of the study. No significant difference was found in the gastric lesion score among the 3 groups at the end of the study. Gastric mucosal lesions were concluded to be common in dogs with acute degenerative disc disease treated with corticosteroids. Neither omeprazole nor misoprostol at the doses used was effective in healing or preventing the further development of gastric mucosal lesions.  相似文献

Osteoarthritis of the elbow joint secondary to elbow dysplasia is common in dogs. Intraarticular radionuclide injection is thought to suppress both synovitis and inflammatory pain mediators in the joint which are not directly addressed by current treatments. This dose-finding investigation was a longitudinal, prospective, experimental parallel group, post-test study with repeated measures. Forty-four dogs, with low to intermediate-grade osteoarthritis, received a single injection into their most clinically affected elbow joint and were randomized into three treatment cohorts; 37 MBq, 64.75 MBq, or 92.5 MBq (normalized to the body surface area of a 22 kg dog) of 117mSn radiocolloid. Dogs were assessed monthly by owners, using the canine Brief Pain Inventory (cBPI), and at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months intervals by investigators. Positive responses to treatment were observed by both owners and clinicians in all dose groups with the medium dose group having the highest and most durable response rate based on cBPI scores. The results of this study support the use of 117mSn radiocolloid as a primary treatment of osteoarthritis in low to intermediate-grade osteoarthritis of the canine elbow.  相似文献

An 8-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented with a 4- to 5-month history of a progressively growing mass above her anus and an inability to defecate for 3 to 4 wk. External perianal and internal regional masses were subsequently identified and diagnosed as tumors of neuroendocrine origin through surgical excision and histopathologic evaluation. The cat was treated with 2 courses of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  相似文献
